We all know that flying isn't good for the environment. On June 1, Delta Air Lines will become the first U.S. carrier to give passengers the option of doing something to counterbalance the global-warming effects of flying.
Every time someone buys a flight at delta.com, he or she will be given the option of donating an additional $5.50 per domestic round-trip as a "carbon offset." The money goes directly to The Conservation Fund, which plants trees to offset carbon emissions from flights. We applaud the initiative but wonder if it's enough.
We're curious what you think. Should airlines add a $5.50 fee to the price of every domestic round-trip flight and then hand that money over to organizations that plant trees? Vote in our poll by clicking here.

Absolutely NOT!!! And that from a staunch environmentalist. All it is going to do is create a new beauracracy but more importantly a bidding war between countries. If you are charging everyone $5.00 then we are going to charge everyone $5.50 then the next will charge $6.00. The only benefit will be the slimy lawyers and politicians.

Charging this nominal fee is a way of encouraging people to delude themselves that flying is all right as long as they 'offset' the environmental damage they are doing by paying up a couple of dollars. The damage done by our lifestyles has a real and devastating impact on millions of lives in those parts of the planet which we manage conveniently not to see. In those places, people are paying the costs of our lifestyles. They are going short of water, are losing land, food and livestock to the global floodwaters. So let's drop the pretence - paying a couple of dollars won't make any difference to the damage we are doing to the poorest people in the world's environment. That five dollar fee is all about making us feel better. There is no end to our selfishness. The only effective way to stop the destruction is to stop flying and we all know it. About eight years ago, my family and I decided not to fly anymore because we believe that it's wrong to destroy someone else's life for the sake of our personal convenience.
