Save/ShareWhile I was at LAX waiting for my delayed flight to Newark, the Continental agent at the gate announced that because the flight was delayed, some people might miss their connections to Europe. That's life, right? But then he said that the airline, as part of its Customer First program, would put up in a hotel any passenger who missed a connection on an international flight. This was the first I'd heard of it. A lot of frequent travelers I know have been saying that Continental is the best U.S. airline, and I can see why they like it. UPDATE: I should've been clearer. What I found notable was that Continental will put passengers up even if the missed connection is due to weather, something airlines have traditionally taken no responsibility for.

i thought all airlines did that!! they make you miss your flight, they pay!

Virtually no airline will do this when the missed connection is due to weather. Weather is not in the control of the airlines ergo, they take no responsibility. I flew with Northwest several years ago and missed connection in Minneapolis because Northwest believed it was a good thing to do to send the connecting airplane on to Newark with 4 people on it instead of delaying the plane so that the other 180 people could make it. We were stuck in the Minneapolis airport all night. Northwest took no responsibility whatsoever. I haven't nor will I ever fly Northwest again.

In November, I was cancelled twice in one night by USAir out of Las Vegas- due to weather. Not only would they not pay for a night's stay, they wanted to fly me to Phoenix Sunday night where I could catch a flight home to California on Tuesday morning!! No thanks! Won't fly them again.
