Face-to-face airplane seating?!
Posted by: Sean O'Neill, Friday, Apr 13, 2007, 3:37 PM

British Airways and several other airlines are discussing plans to alternate the direction that seats are pointed in their planes. This knee-to-knee seat configuration, which you can see in this photo, would allow airlines to squeeze extra seats into both the economy-class and business-class sections of many planes, says this story in the Times (of London).

Only if I was opposite someone I knew (or wanted to know).

no--especially for those who get motion sickness/or disoriented

Surely, this is some sort of late April Fool's joke!! I would challenge any airline exec to fill these test seats with people you don't care for, push it all up against a window, and put bags under the seats. They would quickly see how much more difficult the already-complex job of getting from the window to the aisle would be (when taking a bathroom break), let alone being forced to look at, or knowing you are being looked at on a long flight by someone that displeases you for one reason or another. It's ludicrous! If forced to choose, I'd choose even closer seats and more discomfort in that regard than this crazy idea. But, possibly that's what this is really all about...hmmmm.

HI...PLEASE TELL ME WHEN THIS NIGHTMARE WILL START SO I CAN DELETE THE AIRLINE FROM MY ENTIRE LIFE..OUTRAGEOUS!!! HORRIBLE!!!

If it was like a train I could see it. On shorter flights where the seat don't need to recline.

would they have over the shoulder seats belts to keep you from crashing heads with the person across from you?

This is such a HORRIBLE idea!!!! I would not fly with this airline ever again if they decided to go ahead with this STUPID plan!!!!!!

PLEASE tell me this is a belated April Fool's Day joke. Studiously trying to avoid making prolonged eye contact with the person less than 2 feet from your face for an entire flight? No thank you! As if the middle seat wasn't already sufficiently unpleasant!

Someone in higher places must be smoking too much weed!! I have had a little experience traveling in seating facing each other and it is absolutely horrendous.

Are you kidding, I am a tall lady. My knees hit the back of the seat already. Now I have to face a stranger and hit knees or worse yet, alternate positions! Please make a fast train!

Great,I can face someones noisy brats for 6-7 hours on end with mama trying to smile it off.

Posted By Gerhart Malunat on April 26, 2007, 8:21 AM

Ack. Unless they are putting fewer seats on the flight, that 'extra space' comes either from seats that won't recline, or from other customers. As a smaller than average traveler, I already have had enough of people who want to pull up the armrest and kick their legs over into my seating area (and even I don't have extra leg space, since I try to be considerate of other fliers and fit as much under the seat as I can and save overhead bin space). This just seems like another way for the airline to force me to share the seating space that I paid for with other customers. No thanks.

What could be worse than trying to push your feet under and to the side of the person opposite you to semi-recline? Maybe if seats are back to back they plan to keep them in an upright position at all times. Then feet and legs may not be a problem. I would never willingly fly with this carrier.

PLEASE SAY NO! Bad idea, I can just see legs kicking into eachother and people being rude about "leg space" it is bad enough when someone hogs both armrests and you are in the middle seat (yech!) but I can just imagine the leg wars in this type of situation.

You cannot be serious!!!!

I would not fly with such seats. As a matter of fact I am about to quit flying altogether as the experience is a form of torture and I just can't stand being jammed into a seat any longer.

If this comes to pass, I may never fly again. The designers must be out of their minds.

SAY IT ISN'T SO!!!

I wonder what the governing body for airline safety have to say about it? Seats face forward for a reason. If you face the seat towards the tail of the aircraft, the airline may have to install 5 points seat belt (ever notice that on the flight attendant seat?).

This is a ridiculous idea designed to make greedy corporations richer

There is not enough room now

I do not want to ride a jet in a configuration like the unpleasant trains in t he UK are
