Report from L.A. (part one)
Posted by: Erik Torkells, Monday, Apr 16, 2007, 1:07 PM

I'm just back from L.A.--managed to get home yesterday despite the hideous weather. I'd been to L.A. a few times since the Walt Disney Concert Hall opened in 2003, but I'd never visited it. I went on a tour this trip, and was just blown away. You can't really understand the power of Frank Gehry's building until you stand next to it. (This is probably true of the Guggenheim Bilbao, too, but I have yet to make it there...)

Next time I'm in L.A., I'll absolutely go to a concert at the concert hall, but I'd encourage anyone and everyone to take the tour (from $12) even if they don't have performance tickets. Info on tours is available here.

Erik's comments are spot on regarding the Disney Hall. One tip. . .we decided to attend a symphony concert. . .the best of the tickets were quite expensive, but tickets in back of the stage (the interior set up has seats everywhere surrounding the orchestra) were quite reasonable. As opposed to seeing the back of the conductor and all the instruments, it was actually a nice change to see the conductor from the some vantage point that the musicians do--and the sound was still superb. Another tip, many restaurants downtown have shuttle service to Disney Hall, so you park at the restaurant's valet, keep your car put, and shuttle back and forth to the Hall--of course, if you are staying downtown (I rather like the Italian Renaissance Biltmore hotel--frequent bargains there, Hilton Checkers, or the Standard) Disney Hall isn't that far--and is across from the Omni hotel with its acclaimed Noe restaurant.
