Save/ShareNew York City's JFK airport finally got a cell-phone parking lot--a parking lot where drivers picking up arriving passengers can wait for the passengers to call and tell them when they've landed. (Find details here.) If your local airport doesn't have one of these lots, you should absolutely email them and ask why not. It means fewer cars clogging up airport roads, and cleaner air to boot. (The self-promoter in me needs to point out that cell-phone parking lots are one of the topics Brad Tuttle and I cover in How to Travel Now.)

I live in Salem Oregon and use Portland Airport for all my air travel. We have a cell phone area that is absolutely a must. I've used it to pick up friends, to be picked up, and to sit for 10 minutes if I've arrived too early to pick up my "unaccompanied minor". At $3.00/hour to park, it saves money, circles around the airport, and headaches!

If the state cops & airport security are instructed to chase you away from the curb, you gotta do something!! Driving in circles will probably affect traffic eventually with enough vehicles doing it. Why not simply pave a lane or lot? Logan Airport in Boston isn't the easiest to navigate when the flyer isn't ready...we need one of these!!

Good news--These parking lots are free...but they generally have time limits, ranging from 30 minutes to about two hours...

We use the one in Phoenix ALL the time and can't figure out why all airports don't have one. It makes so much sense - for the environment, auto safety and to avoid stress all around!!

The Tampa, Florida airport has one of these lots and it's great! It even has a large screen (ala drive-in theatre) so that cars can park and watch to see when the plane arrives.

Salt Lake City airport has one as well - with big signage of when each arriving flight has actually landed - (including delays)

I don't see how these parking lots are environmentally friendly--especially in a place like Phoenix, where the cars will idle with the a/c blasting.
It's not that I think these lots are a bad idea, far from it, but let's not "create" some environmental benefit that isn't really there.

do you have map of where this parking area is. JFK is a very large area and we do not go in on VanWyk,we come off ramp on Belt Parkway going west.

Sorry for the delay in responding. It's been a zany week.
You can pull into the "cell phone lot" near Federal Circle upon entering the airport off the Van Wyck Expressway
