When I first saw a Smart car in Europe years ago, I was instantly reminded of the toy cars my Weebles rode in, a fact that sold me on it instantly. Until now, I've sufficed with the dream of, what I thought, was the next best thing (a Mini Cooper), but now my original dream can finally be realized when Smart's fortwo makes its U.S. debut in early 2008. The Smart fortwo gets about 40 miles to the gallon and starts at around $12,000. You can already reserve the model you want to buy, be it the Pure, the Passion, or the Passion Cabrio, for $99.

Currently, the Smart fortwo is on a 50-city tour, giving all Americans the chance to fall in love. Reservations and a list of the Smart fortwo tour stops can be found at smartusa.com.--Lindsey Ramsey

Those cars are really very cute and so easy to park. When I lived in London, it always made me smile to see a Smart car perpendicularly parked along the street.

The mileage of this gas Smart Car pales in comparison to the 80 mpg (imperial) that the current diesel Smart Car gets in Canada. Why isn't the diesel version going to be available?

Dear Bill,
I have no idea, and I didn't receive an answer when I contacted the communications department of DaimlerChrysler. If I hear back, I'll let you know.

Sean

I saw SmartCars in Italy in 2005, they were so cool looking and unique. Always wished they'd be available here. They would be perfect for millions of American drivers. Typically we are alone in our cars, do we really need a huge 10mpg SUV to drive to work ?
Only thing I am concerned about is safety and crash protection for occupants...

Is there any technical data available on the Smart Car?

There's some more info here:

DaimlerChrysler will release more data as the launch date approaches.

Thanks for your comment,

I read somewhere this year that the Smart Car has really dumb reliability, and not enough umph to be other'n a casualty-in-the-waiting on American freeways.

They might be cute, but I would rather be safe!

The Smart car may be cute, but it got a VERY poor rating from Consumer Reports. They did nine months of testing on a Smart car that they had purchased in Canada, and you can read their report here: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/past-road-test/budget-cars-12-06/smart-fortwo/1206_car_smart_fortwo.htm?resultPageIndex=1&resultIndex=2&searchTerm=smart%20car
