New rental car service for budget travelers
Posted by: Sean O'Neill, Monday, Aug 6, 2007, 9:48 AM

Starting in September, leisure travelers have a new car rental company to consider. Simply Wheelz is advertising rates as low as $15 a day on weekdays. And it promises faster service than the typical rental car counter by offering self-service kiosks, modeled upon Alamo's pioneering self-serve kiosks. Here's how it'll work: You'll print out a reservation document at home, similar to an e-ticket. Then, when you reach the Simply Wheelz office, you'll wave your document--and your driver's license--in front of a scanner. The kiosk will print out a rental agreement, which you can take to the lot to pick up your car. The company should get off on a good start because it is owned by Hertz, an established brand. The first location is the Orlando airport. The Simply Wheelz website, Expedia, Orbitz, Priceline and Travelocity have begun to accept reservations.

Correction: In my original post, I misspelled the word wave, writing instead: "you'll waive your document"

This doesn't seem to be much of a deal. When I did a search for a one week rental... I got a return of $359 for an economy car at Wheelz. All of the majors except for National and Alamo were cheaper - Enterprise coming in at $202 for a week.

If Wheelz is advertising itself as a 'BUDGET, ie. low-cost' car rental company they should be sued for false advertising.

I hope Simple Wheelz doesn't duplicate Alamo customer service.
I rented a Alamo car and the next day my card was refused for a hotel booking. My credit card limit was $25,000.
to make a long story short, Alamo booked my total line of credit on my credit card [$25,000] for a one week rental. Never rented Alamo car again. They are the only company that often does that to non American in the USA according to mastercard credit investigations.

You got it right the first time, wave as pass your documents under the scanner. That's what dictionaries are for.....

Seems like a good deal to me- I just did a search for 7 days in November and I could get a car for under $120 :o)

I think car renters should compare wheelz to other renters. I found wheelz to be too expensive. I would never call them a DISCOUNT rental!!!!

Dear Mr. Senna,
Thanks for your comment. Good point about Simply Wheelz -- though I never used the word "discount" and I was trying to get at the idea that it's value for the money "hertz" level service at a lower price. We have a reporter trying out the service shortly.

Thanks,
Sean
P.S.--And thanks to the other commenters, too. That Alamo experience, Ross, sounds horrendous!!!

I have a Hertz# 1 gold card. I reserved a car for 4 days in Orlando at a cost of $184.11 after some discounts. I rented the exact same car on Simply Wheelz for $66.11. I rode the same shuttle bus, went to the Simply Wheelz rental building, received helpful service from the friendly staff (they were having some computer glitches), picked up my car with no problem and returned it again with no problem. The car may have had a few more miles on it than a regular Hertz rental, but I had no problems with the car, or the customer service. I would do it again. I think the secret to getting the best price is to reserve early, as they have a limited number of cars, and probably raise the price as the supply diminishes.

Simply Wheelz is a joke! For a two week rental in Orlando, the rate was over $1000. Yes, it is for the Christmas holidays but I can rent Hertz at our Timeshare for under $400 for two weeks. I emailed Hertz and received a very vague email stating that compared to the rental through Hertz.com, you save S12! S12! I couldn't believe it. They are ripping off the customers who travel for the holidays!

Just rented a car in Orlando. No long lines and great rate. Would rent again with Simply Wheelz.

Simply Wheelz *is* a lower cost rental option. The prices are equivaliant to that of Enterprise.
As far as the holidays are concerned, prices are ALWAYS higher during Christmas and such, that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. However, I don't know where you are getting $1000 from Jaime. It's about $370/wk during the Christmas week for an economy with SW. Enterprise is actually sold out for that time. Alamo is $498 for an economy during that same period.

Well-we just reserved a van for Orlando- 9 days in March and it was teh LOWEST price I had found so far-about $100 less than the next best deal-and that was with coupons. We will see how the whole self-serve thing goes!

Just rented for March; seems like a good deal; $321 total for a minivan for 9 days. Is the shuttle the same as the regular Hertz shuttle? Do you scan the documents at the airport, then board the bus to the rental location or bus, then scan?
Will I have to call for the shuttle from the airport, or are they available periodically?
Thanks for any help!

Wow, that is cheap. I paid $259 for a week when I was in Orlando last year. Good thing I saved on my trip with Universal Adventure USA. The entire trip cost me less than $1000. And most of it was the rental car!

I just rented a compact car through Simply Wheelz for two weeks in June(Orlando) and it's only costing me $255....that's with tax. I thought that was a great deal!! They were cheaper then the other car rental places that I checked.

I just rented an SUV for 7 days for $175... Hopefully, the service is as good as they say. Although I will say that, for someone who doesnt want to use a credit card, they have the lower "hold" on your account. Last December when we rented with another rental center in Orlando Airport, they charged me a $350 hold fee plus my rental for using a debit card. Simply Wheelz charges you $150 hold regardless of using a credit or debit card.

I just rented a full size car for next June in San Diego. The rental was at least $60 dollars less than I could find anywhere else for an economy car. How bad is that?

Just reviewed all the comments and compared prices for a March trip and $150 plus savings with SimplyWheelz. If all goes smoothly we will use them again.
