USA Today is reporting that
starting in early November, Southwest is going to automatically give passengers an assigned number within in its current boarding groups: A, B and C. They'll get the number and the group when they check in, which can be done within 24 hours of a flight. Another change: A and B groups will also be expanded to 60 passengers.
The new policy means you don't have to squat a place in line to have a chance to grab your preferred seat. [Via USA Today.]
More disturbingly, Southwest is also ending its policy of allowing families with children to pre-board. Details, here.

I had requested, and been given, a window seat on a flight from from Vt to Fl. When I got on the plane in NY, there was a young mother with her 18 month old, all settled in to MY window seat and the center seat. She smiled up at me and said, Oh, you don't mind, do you? He wanted to sit near the window. It was a trip from hell !!! She was up and down with him for the whole flight, and when they were sitting, she had a toy that talked when you pulled the string. I wasn't in a very good mood at the end of that trip. The comment was made that I should have told her the window seat was mine, but then how did I know she was going to be so inconsiderate of me. Let families with kids take their chances where they sit like us without children do. Oh yes, I have 4 children, 9 grand children and 5 greats, so I do know about kids!!

FINALLY IT HAS BEEN YEARS SINCE SW SAID THEY COULD ASSIGN SEATS... I HATED THE CATTLE CAR EFFECT AND HAVE FLOWN OTHER AIRLINES BECAUSE OF THIS.; ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS AND ALL I SAW WAS THEY COULDNOT WALK THE TALK!!!!
SINCE THERE ARE VERY RUDE PEOPLE WHO WILL NO MATTER WHAT THINK THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO GO AHEAD OF PEOPLE IN THOSE UNGODLY LINES, THIS MIGHT FIX IT

What I wish SWA would do is ban DVD players without headphones. Does the whole flight really want to hear little Billy's cartoon?! Sheesh!

What we have now is "the Cult of the Child".Children are passengers. Just like adults, just like seniors, just like anyone. They need to have their own seats and those tickets need to be purchased at market rates.
Why should I subsidize a child's travel, his/her kids meals, etc? Or his moms "special" family parking at hotels, airports, grocers, etc Having kids is a choice--not a right.Sorry, you need to be up for all the costs that comes with them.
I have no right to expect an airline to ticket me and let me ride on my husband's lap because we want to save some $$ for a seat. A few years back I sat on the Eurostar from London to Paris with 2 upscale looking and French/English speaking parents w/ 2 very large "2 yr Olds" who were traveling sans tickets --lap sittting . This was train seating where there was a middle table and passengers are forced to be seated across from one another.
These "2 yrs olds" that these parents were "lap sitting" were everywhere you want to be(just like the Visa commercial)--they were getting into my space, climbing around the floor around my feet--asking to sit in unoccupied seats in other rows and being allowed to sit on my table space---my travel was worse for the experience as these kids were flailing around and making a constant nuisance the entire trip. The father as I recall, let a child finally have his seat and he stood in our little bit of space. I paid a premium to take this train and these tykes went gratis.
Have had the same things happen on planes where
unrestrained children(sitting in an adult lap) are potential projectiles. Most parents would not put their kid in a car without restraints, but in a plane, if there is turbulence, a drop in height, etc--- a kid could go flying like a projectile and you have potentially big problems.... possible injury or death for the child or another passenger--not to mention just regular hassles--- kids wave and wobble into what little space you pay good money for and parents these days seem to feel they have to let us all be amused by the nonstop chatter and toy noises/backseat kicking etc.
It is odd to me how parents purport that their children are their most precious thing in this world--and then will cheap out rather than buy the kid a seat and put said "precious child" in a restraint to keep it safe.
In fairness to the child, I would be angry and petulant too if my parents flew me for hours where i was forced to sit in a lap and had no personal space of my own.

If I plan on traveling soon but only to the next state do you think it would be cheaper to drive than fly due to low gas prices? Do you know of a site with a calculator on it?
