Save/ShareThe editors at TripAdvisor have come up with a list of 10 places that have ghost tours and other shockers.
But I'm not sure that their suggestions are all that good.
Topping their list is the Farnsworth House Inn in Gettysburg, Penn., because it offers Civil War-themed ghost tours of its attic and basement.
Oddly, customers reviewing the Inn at another online review site, TravelPost.com, generally hated it. Anonymous customers posting at Yahoo!'s Travel Page didn't like it much either.
In fact, most of the customer reviews on TripAdvisor's own page for the hotel are rather sour, too!
Hmmm...What about #2 on the list?
TripAdvisor.com's editors suggest you stay at the St. James Hotel in Cimarron, New Mexico. The appeal of the hotel is that it is a National Historic Landmark (built in 1876), and the hotel says that it's haunted by ghosts. But most customers who post online reviews don't seem to much like it. Read the customer reviews on their page for the St. James Hotel, and the general consensus is that it isn't worth it. (No reviews at TravelPost but the ones at Yahoo's travel page are rather negative.)
Okay, now, let's go to pick #3: The editors at TripAdvisor like the Lizzie Borden B&B in Fall River, Mass., an industrial ghost town—(though residents would no doubt disagree and say it's quite lively)—overlooking lovely Narragansett Bay. This time, the appeal is supposed to be that this Victorian home is where, in 1892, a wealthy businessman and his wife were found murdered. The youngest daughter, Lizzie, was accused of the murder but acquitted by a jury. However, TripAdvisor's customer reviews are lukewarm at best.
At least when it comes to your Halloween travels, be skeptical of the recommendations offered in the press release from TripAdvisor and instead trust the wisdom of the masses by reading their customer reviews—and the customer reviews on other websites.

Charleston, SC has some haunted spots. I stayed at a B&B in Charleston where I had my own ghost encounter. I'll stay at another place next time.
