Make the Most of Your Time on Earth, which hits bookstores today, pools Rough Guides travel writers' favorite one-of-a-kind experiences, from punting on Cambridge's River Cam to voyaging into Antarctica's unknown. It's the latest in an increasingly crowded field of aspirational, list-like guidebooks (Patricia Schultz's 1,000 Places to See Before You Die being one of the originators).

We've selected one of Rough Guides' picks--a pilgrimage to an ancient, mind-bogglingly ornate temple in Tamil Nadu, India--to whet your appetite. Read the excerpt by clicking here.

I have to say this book does not particularly excite me. Although, the title is certainly more inspiring than places I should see before I die. Let's see some originality in the travel writing field, instead of a rehash of the same old thing.

"Make the Most of Your Time on Earth" reminds me of the final lecture of Prof. Randy Pausch at Carnegie Mellon University last month. He's got terminal cancer but gave the most upbeat and insightful lecture on achieving your childhood dreams. Pretty amazing, worth watching the video: http://www.cmu.edu/homepage/innovation/2007/fall/words-to-live-by.shtml
