R.I.P., Windjammer?
Posted by: Sean O'Neill, Friday, Dec 14, 2007, 11:38 AM

Bye-bye, Windjammer? As an earlier blog post noted, Windjammer Barefoot Cruises ceased sailing operations in September. But it continued to sell cruises scheduled to launch in November. None of those November sailings happened.

Paul Motter, the editor of Cruisemates, is warning people not to give Windjammer any money, even though the company has not yet declared bankruptcy. That sounds like good advice, and it's shared by Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor of CruiseCritic.com.

[Update 12/17: On my first posting, I mistakenly said that Paul Motter was editor of Cruise Critic. I regret the error. Here's the latest news on Windjammer.]

This news is a blow to budget travelers because Windjammer's four yachts and schooners offered laid-back Caribbean itineraries on small ships for only $1,000 to $2,000 a week per person, including meals and taxes. If you need a refund, see this helpful webpage.

Oh no!!! I was planning on going on one of the Windjammer cruises sometime this year and was curious why I had not received one of their cyber-sailor newsletters in a while!!! Are there any other fleets that offer the same type of small cruise experience in the caribbean????

Sorry to learn Barefoot seems to have sunk. My wife and I met on the Flying Cloud 29 years ago. On our 30th anniversary we were planning to relive the experence.

CJ Lares raises a fine point: Have any other cruise companies yet stepped into this breach with a similar product? Despite its operational woes, Windjammer obviously had located a niche audience.

You should try the Star Clippers. They still have smaller ships that cruise around the caribbean. May be less expensive than chartering a yacht.

An alternative is the Maine Windjammers Association. Although not in the Caribbean, they have small ships (less than 50 passengers) and great captains. We sailed the Victory Chimes a couple of years ago and loved it!

I have sailed on Windjammer Barefoot several times and will also miss them.

Any other La Mer timeshare owners thinking about a class action suit? It just seems what the Burkes have done is illegal and that someone ought to be going after some of their assets.

I am also looking for an attorney to file suit against Windjammer for LaMer losses.

i recently found out that LAMer does not exists or Barefoot cruises. Did you find an attorney?

so sorry to hear...the Windjammer cruises were fantastic - I have had the lucky opportunity to sail twice and my family another time years before...they were the best cruises ever, and I always recco them to friends...what a shame...they really catered to you...nothing like being on your own private yacht with @ 100 guest and see such beauty so close and personal...all good things come to an end....maybe someone with a big bank book will help them out ..it really is a loss! The Polynesia and the Legacy were great ships!
