Heathrow changing its weird one-bag rule
Posted by: Sean O'Neill, Friday, Jan 4, 2008, 12:36 PM

Starting Jan. 7, passengers flying through London's Heathrow airport will be able to carry onto flights two pieces of hand baggage. This is a reversal of a previous ruling in August 2006, which limited carry-on baggage to one piece -- period. The rest of the world lets travelers take two bags on board planes, usually one suitcase and one personal bag, like a briefcase or purse.

The one-bag limit is still in place at Gatwick airport.

According to British Airways, these are the new rules:
You can carry onboard one bag no bigger than 22 inches by 17.5 by inches x 9.85 inches, including wheels, pockets and handles. Plus you can tote on board one briefcase or laptop-sized bag. Items must have reasonable weights.

EARLIER TODAY Southwest tightens its luggage rules.

If only life were that simple on the hand baggage front here in the UK. While it's true BA have introduced the two bag rule at Heathrow and Heathrow in general is back to two bags quite a few airports in the UK are still at one bag (Bristol and Inverness come to mind). While some carriers, notably easyJet and Ryanair are still at one piece of hand baggage.

The moral here is - CHECK before you travel.

I have commented on this issue, specifically about Gatwick, but don't remember if it was on your website. You, and other travel "gurus" like you should STRONGLY recommend that ALL travelers use Heathrow instead of Gatwick whenever possible. If enough of us boycott Gatwick, and put some of their security personnel out of work, maybe they will hear us!!

Having just returned two days ago from London, we flew through Stansted. This airport strongly enforces the one bag rule. It was sad to see so many travelers dumping holiday gifts in order to comply with the one bag limit.

I think the one bag rule applies throughout the UK. We just flew from EDI on 12/30 and had to go back downstairs and add our carry-ons to our checked luggage. I am only grateful that we were in such a small airport and not a monstrosity like Heathrow or Gatwick.

It will take a lot more than changing this rule to get me to fly through Heathrow again. Four times in the past year and each experience was a nightmare. Never again! Of course, BA may have had a lot to do with that too....

While it is great that the one bag rule has changed, the most burdensome hurdle is the liquids limit. For those of us who do not want to buy most of our toiletries at our foreign destination, this limit makes it almost impossible to carry on all our luggage, no matter how light we travel because some of our liquids have to be checked. This opens the whole Pandoras's box of lost luggage, one of travelers' greatest fears.

How about rules returning from London..even the
TSA took my umbrella away
at the Houston airport.
Of course I could go back and check it in. I dont think so..
