Affordable Europe: Save on Paris sublets
Posted by: Budget Travel, Friday, May 30, 2008, 8:07 AM

Good news: Short-term sublet prices drop in the summer.

Sure, you'll spend more on airfare to fly to Europe in July and August. But summer price hikes don't apply to lodging if you go the apartment-rental route. In fact, the cost of short-term sublets drops in the hot months, when Parisians take their own vacations in the provinces, putting their homes in the city up for rent. The surfeit of available spaces makes prices go down.

Classified ads websites such as Kijiji and Craigslist have powered this growing trend; now, intrepid French apartment-owners are using blog software to create websites for their pied a terres, with images, maps, and neighborhood tips.

Obviously, it is buyer beware when it comes to transactions with individuals you don't know. For the wary, there are several established companies for furnished sublets, such as Kudeta (kudeta-home.com), that are more legit.

Hi, Sandy,
Unfortunately, we don’t provide listings of private apartments.
For Europe, please consult the services that were listed in the blog post:

Sandi -

I have used parisattitude.com and apartment-paris.com to rent vacation apartments in Paris and have had no problems. Also, I have a an American friend living in Paris who rents and sells real estate. Her name is Christine Brooks and her email is christibroo@yahoo.com.

Good luck.

Sandy

We made our apartment in Montmartre available for let from Easter this year. We were advised that this market expects very high/luxury standards but at realistic prices, so that is what I hope we have delivered. Its early days yet for us but you can check out our place in Montmartre at www.aflatinparis.net

Sandy,

I rent short-term holiday apartments in cities around the world all the time. I'm a travel writer so I might rent from 4-8 weeks while researching a guidebook. I've used a lot of different companies (all booked online) but I've rented mostly through http://www.vrbo.com/ (Vacation Rentals By Owners), which isn't really an apartment rental company but is more a facilitator/broker I guess. I find their site easy to use and transactions have always been secure. After initially selecting your property with vrbo.com you then deal with owners. Once there, sometimes you never have anything to do with them, in other cases you become friends, as we did with one.

We've rented everywhere including Brussels, Antwerpt, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Venice and Milan, and we've had fantastic apartments in lively neighbourhoods, often overlooking interesting streets. In Amsterdam we overlooked a canal and it was wonderful to watch the locals having their picnics on their boats. In Brussels we had this very cool place on the top floor of the highest building in the city with spectacular views - it was winter and it was a joy to watch the weather change and incredible when it snowed.

When you break down the price to a nightly fee it's far cheaper than a hotel - we've tended to pay between $50-90 a night - and it's worth it for the space, the cooking facilities (even if you're only making coffee, breakfast or prepping snacks) and it's a great way to live like a local - I write a lot about this on my travel blog: http://cooltravelguide.blogspot.com/ and it's something I really encourage travellers to do - and to meet locals. I've made some great friends in the lobbies and elevators of buildings!
