Thanks, but, um...

For our 10th-anniversary issue, we enlisted readers to write and photograph our June issue. I hesitate to make fun of any of our readers, but...a few of the pitches we got were kind of funny. Here are the top six stories we didn't assign:

"China. Most challenging restroom facilities. Especially for women. Title: Bathrooms I have Known."

"I would like a get away from it all--especially automobiles. I have been hit three times within a five year period. After recovering from injuries, I would like to go celebrate and truly feel like I can relax away from our auto based society."

"My dream trip to Tahiti turned out to be a disaster. I vomited on the French man beside me."

"I always thought it would be really cool to make a coffee table book about toilets around the world. Everyone needs them, uses them and they are such a cultural thing... I've heard of the places that are just a hole you stand over. And, since this could be a monumental project... but you would pay the tab... I say we choose a venue that would over a lot of toilets, yet not be a round the world trip. Toilets of the Orient Express. I think it has a nice ring to it..."

"My friends always ask for my travelogues after my trips. They say reading them is almost like being with me. They even request my work trip stories from pig farm tours."

"Switzerland, Norway, Netherlands, and Belgium: The best destinations for your final days. A story about death tourism, or the practice of some persons choosing to die in a country other than their own, would certainly grab the attention of readers."

I think Toilets of the World would be very interesting. We tend to think the world revolves around us Americans, and what a better way to understand other cultures than how they dispose of their waste?

Was that filed under poop culture or travel & popular culture? Ha, ha.

It looks like Amazon.com has the answer to your prayers: "Going Abroad: The Bathroom Survival Guide : How to Answer the Call of Nature Anywhere in the World : A Must for Travelers Wherever They, Er, Go! (Paperback)" It might not be a "coffee table book" but are you sure that's what you really want on your table?

When my dad was dying, with Parkinson's, I caught a glimpse of a TV show about Swiss assisted suicide clinics. I looked for printed/online articles, briefly, and probably would have appreciated more info - but not in my favorite travel magazine....

The "Poop Tour" may sound like a farce, but the state of the local bathrooms is very, very serious business to any tourist! Trust me on this. You shoulda gone with it!

There is a coffee table book about pit latrines, and calendars, though I couldn't give you the name. There's also a museum. Check it out at

Any toilet-based article would HAVE to include the ladies room at the Shoji Tabuchi theater in Branson MO. Live orchids on the sinks!

The worst toilet encounter I experienced was in St. Petersburg, Russia. The room was guarded by a Russian Mama and if you didn't have the right change you didn't enter. I paid and found a toilet with only half a toilet seat. I guess the Russians felt this was good enough for half-assed Americans.

I agree with Jan. Your decision to stay away from toilets is flawed. It's a major travel issue and it's pertinent to everyone. More importantly, despite what anyone will tell you, it would be read by ALL. C'mon, Budget Travel. Don't you know us by now?
