I am headed to Paris for New Year's - any chance these free admissions will last?

Lisa,
Lucky you to be ringing in the New Year in Paris. Alas, no one knows if the programs will be extended through the rest of the year.

It's worth noting that this doesn't only apply to France. For as long as I can remember, European museums have always offered free nights or days - not all museums of course, as they all have different policies, and it varies depending on whether they come under the auspices of a local municipality, state or national government department or whether they are private. But you'll generally find that most museums have one evening a week or one day a month when it's free to get in. Guidebooks don't generally include this information as there simply isn't enough room and policies change, so I always advise people to head straight for the tourist office the moment they arrive and either ask them which museums are free on which days or grab a handful of brochures and check for yourself.

I'm also planning a December/January visit to Paris & southern France. Any special bargains that time of year.
