As we predicted, the money-losing Italian national airline Alitalia is seeking bankruptcy protection. Government officials say they'll sell much of their share of the airline to a bunch of investors who will buy parts of the airline and create a smaller leaner one.
Bloomberg News hints that Air France/KLM may be one of the investment group, but that private Italian airline Air One (which we've blogged about before) will be the main merger partner.
In the meantime, if you already have tickets booked on Alitalia, don't worry. Your flights should take off as planned. But be sure to sign up for flight alerts, as schedule changes may occur if any protests by airline workers happen.

Will Air Alitalia be in existence in 3/09? We are scheduled to fly NY-Rome. Should we be concerned about having a flight?

Good!
Alitalia destroyed my favorite suitcase making large holes in the front and top. I was on a tour and my suitcase did not arrive with me. It was delivered sometime 2 days later while I was out touring. Alitalia refused to pay for my newly purchased essentials pj's, makeup, hairbrush etc since they claim to have delivered the suitcase within the grace period. I was on a tour out of the hotel so I don't know what time they delivered it. I wrote a letter to them explaining that I only purchased things essential to my comfort and enjoyment of my trip (a total of $60). but they refused to pay. I have been mad at them ever since.

No wonder they are bankrupt, next to British Airways one of the worst airlines with the rudest crew members.

I am tentatively booked to travel from Miami to Rome on October 1 2008 Flt 631 for a conference and return from Rome on October 6 to Miami, Flt. 925A. Can anyone positively say if the airline will still be operating then.

Had a flight to Rome last week, was canceled about 2 weeks ago. Cannot get my $800 from Alitalia. This is really disturbing. Any thoughts?
