The U.S. Postal Service doesn't track the changing volume of "wish you were here" type cards. And no organization seems to publish estimates of post card sales. So, in the absence of hard numbers, I'll put the question to you.
In this age of travel blogs, cell phone cameras, text messages, and Facebook social-networking websites, do you send postcards?
User reviews and comments that include profanity or personal attacks or other inappropriate comments or material will be removed from the site. Additionally, entries that are unsigned or contain "signatures" by someone other than the actual author will be removed. Finally, we will take steps to block users who violate any of our posting standards, terms of use or privacy policies or any other policies governing this site. I do still send post cards and I hope I never stop.

Of course. It's an easy way to keep in touch with Grandma and others who don't use the internet. And it's more fun to receive real mail even if you are in internet user. A postcard says I'm thinking of you way more than an email ever will.

I mail two postcards every few days, one for me and my husband, trying to win a prize in Disney's Year of a Million Dreams giveaway.
I also play Fairy Godmailer while at Walt Disney World, mailing postcards from Mickey and the gang to young children who will be visiting WDW soon. They love getting personalized postcards from Mickey or a Princess.

I send them to neices and nephews for their enjoyment. I also send them to myself, so I have a memory with beautiful postage stamps when I return home. I rotate them in a clear napkin holder on my kitchen counter top, so that I can dream of past and future journeys as I go about my day.

Definitely. My two sisters and I just came back from a week long trip and we sent out about 20 postcards between us plus we all bought some as keepsakes. It's definitely more fun and personal to send and receive postcards!

Postcards are interesting and fun when you are travelling to a place that people could be interested in but might never get there. Ex., Australia , New Zealand are countries that many do not get to visit. I like to receive cards from my friends who visit India, CHina etc. The cards are attractive and are great to receive......non-travellers really like them too.

No Doubt!
I love receiving them, so I make sure I send them as well.
I also send them to my husband to let him know how much I enjoy traveling with him ;-)

I actually adopt soldiers overseas and use post cards all the time to send a quick note to them.. Also when I travel I send them!

I buy postcards for the photos. The professional photographers usually get the photo I wish I had snapped. I keep them with other photos of my trip. The postcard includes a description of the scene which is also helpful to the viewer.

I stopped sending postcards years ago. It's time consumming and now it's become costly. I doubt if any of the recipients really care "Did they send me the postcard to make me feel envious"?
Posted By Jerry on August 18, 2008, 12:24 PM
Very much, yes. I send postcards because they are fun to receive in the mail, they are a tangible sign of your thoughts of someone, and they (let's hope) can serve as some sort of historic record.
An SMS or Facebook message are fun, but they do not last long -- and you cannot post them on the fridge ;)
Posted By Magdalena Rahn on August 18, 2008, 12:25 PM
Rarely. I prefer the cultural experience of an Internet cafe and the ease of email. But my daughters like to send cards to their pals back in the States--I think it feels more "real" to them and gives their young friends an "oh, that's where they are!" image.

I love to send postcards, I always send one to myself as well. Its a fun surprise to receive when I return home from a great trip. They are much more personal than an e-mail or text message and lets someone know you were thinking of them in a particular location. FUN memories

I send postcards from foreign countries where the price of stamps is not so ridiculous.
In the US, I send postcards in lieu of letters when emails or phone calls or not practical and my message is short. I try to use the US mail as little as possible, however.

I always have (and hope always to) sent cards esp to people who will never have the chance to see the places I've been fortunate to see. I pre write address labels before departure so I know if I've sent one to grandma yet...also keep a few for myself...sometimes a view just can't be captured by camera.

I always send postcards! The nieces and nephews take them to school and find the places I go on the map. I bring coins when I get back and they show those off, too! It personalizes places they've only heard of.

...I love the personal connection with friends and family when traveling...it's getting harder to find postcards, though...recently my daughter and i couldn't find any in West Palm Beach, Fl...we retrieved a couple from a box in a drugstore that was closing them out!...i hope this isn't a "sign of the times"
Posted By Kathy Diez on August 18, 2008, 12:40 PM
No. But entirely based on the cost. With the recent decline of the USD, it cost me about 2.50 US to send out each postcard based on 50-75 EU for each card and then another 75+ EU to mail it. Mind you, we were getting .61 for each of our dollars in mid-May; its probably an even worse exchange rate today.
In addition, many US folks are not traveling overseas due to the economy so why rub it in? But
I do send postcards when traveling within the US. But overseas, no longer.
Posted By Eileen on August 18, 2008, 12:41 PM
ABSOLUTELY! We enjoy sending post cards to nieces and nephews (and now to their children) from our travels -- especially overseas, as it exposes them to the wide world of adventure out there. I also paste cartoons to the back of US Postal post cards, adding humorous commentary. These go to relatives and friends whenever I can add appropriate humorous commentary. They enjoy it. Especially the kids, as they find that an adult really does think about them.

I always send postcards when I travel. I collect stamps and think it's a great way to get people interested in collecting. Other countries have some really cool stamps.
I don't mind the expense. If you can't afford to send a postcard you probably shouldn't be spending your money on travel.

My husband, who moved to the U.S. from Wales, U.K., when he was 13, still has many relatives in Wales. One cousin, who has MS and lives alone, loves to write to him. My husband is not a writer, but every time we go somewhere he buys postcards, sends a short note ("We're here on vacation--hope you're well"), and sends it to him. He loves to receive them and has a large map of the U.S. where he searches the location of the postcard's picture. Those cards are worth every cent it takes to buy them and the overseas postage to be able to bring him a moment of joy.

Posted By Paula on August 18, 2008, 12:54 PM
I used to send them. Sometimes my daughter still does when she wants to remember something special about a trip. She used to send them when she was younger to see if it would get home before we did. One time we learned that we should have put U.S.A. on one as there was another city in that country the same as ours. We never got it! The reason I've stopped sending postcards is that when I'm on vacation, I just want to enjoy my time without having to know I have to sit and write out postcards. I don't mind but sometimes I just want some time away.

I LOVE postcards!! In fact; I belong to a post card list on a travel db that I belong to. I manage the postcard list (in a Word document to print out address-labels) and whenever someone from that list travels; they send out postcards to the list. We probably keep the post office in business.
Long live post cards! They are the highlight of the week when receiving them!

I send postcards all the time. When I was in Europe missing my boyfriend badly, I sent him one from every city I was in. It's a way to show I'm thinking of someone without having to check an extra bag full of snowglobes on the way home. My grandfather's assisted living apartment is decorated with postcards I sent him- it means a lot to him since I don't live in the same state and don't see him very often, and it means a lot to me to see them displayed because I know he enjoyed seeing them.
At home, I also send postcards for various reasons. When I moved states, I emailed all my friends my new address but then sent them all postcards so they could see where I was. This is especially true for my friends overseas- for them, a postcard of the Grand Canyon is as exotic as one of a Tasmanian devil is for me. I also collect funny art ones to send friends if they're having a bad few days, since on a student budget I can afford to send postcards far more often than flowers.

I've always sent post cards mostly to those interested in stamp collecting or those interested in historical and cultural themes; especially cards from places like Zanzibar, Nepal, Brazil,etc...and I'm always thrilled to receive them, too. I usually save the best ones for my 'collection' that I proudly diplay with refrigerator magnets...everyone is pleased to see I have saved their cards!

Posted By Nancy on August 18, 2008, 1:06 PM
Postcards might seem antiquated, but I love to give and receive them more than a simple text or phone photo because they are much more personalized. To save precious time on vacay though, I usually print out the names of all the people I wish to send postcards onto a sheet of labels before I go, then it's easy to just smack them on the postcard, place a stamp and write a few thoughtful words.

I love sending post cards to myself and others who ask me to. When I receive the ones I send myself, it becomes a physical reminder of my trip rather than having to rely on the Gigs of digital memory that has lately been looked at. Furthermore, I'm making this big collage that is decorating my "Travel Room"!

Yes. I send postcards, and we buy some as a backup, in case the photos don't turn out. The picture postcards are especially good to send to older folks with declining eyesight. It helps them to "get out of the house" even if they can't, and is a tangible reminder that someone is thinking of them. Phone calls are nice, but fleeting.

Yes and no. To my parents and my grandkids I do, because they enjoy getting them so much. To my adult daughters, no...since they are so technology driven. For them, I take a cell phone photo of something neat that I am seeing and text it to their phones. It usually generates longer conversations about how my trip is going and they get to see something that isnt the canned touristy version of my destination.

I live in AZ. A year ago, the county sheriff outlawed letters to/from jail inmates. The rumor is he thought drugs were being smuggled into his jail inside envelopes and the glue on stamps. Anyway now the only mail inmates can send/receive is a post card and only those with metered or USPO imprinted postage. There are approximately 25,000 inmates in the county jail system.

Yes, strangely enough though only when I send them to our kids, relatives and friends from foreign countries. I will on occasion send a scenic postcard to some little friends whose daddy is in the Coast Guard and have recently moved to Florida.
I buy postcards from our foreign trips to put in our books that I make of each trip.

I love sending myseld postcards from where I have been. It is like a diary of my trip and usually gets a better overall picture of the place then I can with my camera. However, I also like the stamp and postmark aspect of it and too many modernized areas no longer have a postmark to show the date and postal location. Too bad! It is fun to send to friends too as with all the technology today it is nice to get a piece of friendly snail mail once in a while to brigten your day!
Posted By Rebecca on August 18, 2008, 1:24 PM
Nothing will ever replace postcards!!! They are tangible, and always exciting to receive. I've saved every one I've ever gotten. I am a French teacher, and whenever I go to France I send postcards to my students (30-50 at a whack!) The kids cherish them so much. I also send postcards to my nieces every time I am in a region or city of France that is new to me. The postcards serve as a sort of record for where I've been. When they are older, we can travel to those places together. They will already know them, if only a little, because the sent photographs have been with them as long as they can remember. No electronic correspondence could work as much enduring magic as a postcard.

I send post cards all the time. I love them! Everybody enjoys getting them, and it is more personal than an email, text message or an IM. Let's face it, there is nothing special about getting a text message from Rome, but getting a post card with a picture of the Coliseum on it is impressive! Plus, you can hang it on your refrigerator. It doesn't matter if it arrives the day after you send it or a month later, it still serves the same purpose: to tell people that you were thinking about them.
I send postcards to friends who have children to hopefully spark their interest in travel, in geography, and in different cultures. No email will ever do that.
The cost of sending a post card is nothing, really. I sent about five postcards a day from Italy to the US and everybody was so grateful to get them, and it only set me back a few dollars.
When you send an email out, you're lucky to get a 25% response rate. If you send a post card, almost everybody will thank you for it. I'll take those odds every day.

I love postcards!
I do send them still, even though the other ways listed are easier... it's just that old-fashioned little girl in me that used to LOVE it when I'd get something addressed to ME... I felt "special."
So now I suppose it's my thinking that maybe when the person I send a postcard to gets it, I have done something to let that person know that they are special to me. Plus, it just feels good! :)

It's so fun to pick out the perfect postcard for each person - a cat in a windmill for the cat lover, a piece of art for the art lover etc. They're also educational for our niece and nephew to see what we're seeing and I always encourage them to go online and learn more about each place. I will never stop and I hope my friends and family never stop sending them to me! They're wonderful mementos.

How else are your friends and family going to decorate their refrigerator doors unless you send them postcards?
Often postcards catch the essence of a travel spot in a view or time of day that I never can with my camera . . . and give me a way to show my dearest friends that I care enough about them to take the time to write a postcard and buy the local stamps to mail them. In many countries, the postage stamps are a special added attraction!

His favorite is one showing an "alien" that I sent from Roswell, NM. We all enjoy using them as starting points for conversations about the places I've been

I do send postcard, but I now take address lables for the recipients and US postage stamps. When I arrive back at the first American airport I mail them.People get them sooner and no one seems to care about the foriegn stamps.

Are you kidding? We spend a part of every day in each port looking for and buying post cards for friends and family...we really buy little else because we are not "shoppers". We also buy them for ourselves to put in the trip book...their pictures are far better than ours! And our friends always tell us how much they appreciate each and every one!

No shortage of postcards here! We sell more and more each season.
Of course, by selling postcards in our gift shops, we don't know if the postcards are actually mailed out or simply purchased for the pretty pictures of Santa Claus and our roller coasters. :)
Great question!

Yes, I send post cards and I collect them. I've been collecting them since college! They are a great way to stay in touch, a good pick me up for those you have not been able to keep up with as often as you would like. And further more, when you do not have a cell tower or access to the Internet when you travel, it is a great way to express yourself. Who does not reach for mail with someone signature before a printed piece? May they never go away! :)

Postcards are an easy way to communicate with very young children (and older ones who don't have a computer). When traveling we send a postcard to a different grandchild every day. It is rewarding to have them bring the cards to us to hear about the places we have visited. I find it more difficult to locate cards on each trip, I hope the vendors realize that this is still an item of value!

There is something thrilling about getting mail the old fashion way. It's a quick way to tell people you're thinking of them.
I even send myself postcards when I'm abroad so I can have a card to put into my scrapbook with the postmark and their stamp. Some postcard pictures are much better than what I can ever take.

We also send postcards each day to our selves - summarizing our activities for that day. It's great to get them - usually after we return. I add them to the photo album.

LAX airport has no place to mail anything, including post cards. The xplanation (sic) is that mailboxes are opportunities to send anthrax or bxxbs. International departing passengers are xtremely (sic) frustrated by this and sometimes tip baggage cart workers to mail for them.
So far as I know, LAX is the only US airport to recognize this xtreme (sic) threat. SFO, for xample (sic) has postage machines and mailboxes.

I have always sent post cards but never again. In the last two trips--cruises to New Zealand/Australia and to South America--I faithfully sent out postcards to all my family and close friends as soon as I hit port. None of these cards arrived before I returned home. So now I will take with me email addresses and hope to find a terminal somewhere.

I travel 70% of the week to various cities around the US. My six nieces and nephews each get a postcard from wherever I happen to be, and they compiled their cards into one 3-ring binder. Every Christmas they get out the binder, and they ask for more details about the cities.
I keep a roll of postcard stamps in my carry-on bag!

I send postcards because my family and friends like to receive them. Depending on the country, I get back home before the cards reach the recipients.
I also buy postcards for myself because the scene on the postcard cannot be duplicated by me.

I gets comments on the photos, never on a postcard. There is never enough room on a post card to write all I want to say. As for sending a card to myself, I am not senile and have trip memories with out self postcard jolt.

YES! A picture is worth a thousand words. I send them to family and friends tagging the images to their areas of interest such as history, nature, geography, technology or simply funny pics. I also send one home to my sweetie to remind him of the fun we had on our trip. Postcards received line the inside of my kitchen cabinets. It makes it fun to put the dishes away. And, my houseguests smile when they open the cuboards and find their treasured memories inside!

YES! My husband and I only send postcards to those who like the receive them -- so we're very selective when it comes to the recipient list. The last thing you want to worry about during a (domestic/international) vacay/biz trip is writing postcards at the very last minute before they close your gate, finding the damn mailbox (hopefully inside the airport) and of course getting the right stamp! I wrote some 30+ postcards during my honeymoon in Buenos Aires back in Oct 04 and none of my friend has gotten them yet (it's 08/18/08 today). Then we went back to BA in Nov 07, mailed the postcards through the concierge this time and they arrived in Feb 08, ha!
Just got back from a trip to Medellin, Colombia, we left our postcards (only 13 this time, we've cut our list significanly) with our trusted driver. Apparently postcards are not so common there, neither is the post office. We had NO luck finding a post office anywhere within the central area. Our driver's girlfriend suggested that we hand deliver the postcards once we're back home and both my husband and I (rolled our eyes) politely objected the suggestion.
Don't know if you realize that a lot of people don't understand the importance of sending postcard from the LOCAL post office. My husband went to London for the very first time eons ago for a biz trip, met up with my side of the family and wrote me a postcard. Before he left, he asked my cousin to get a stamp and drop it off in a mailbox for him. Then my aunt came over to visit a month later, and she HANDED me the postcard MINUS the stamp!! She wondered out loud: Why waste money on postage!?!
We'll keep on sending these darn postcards, regardless of how complex the process can be, to those who appreciate receiving them, admiring the postmark and ogling over the local stamp!

Yes! It's fun to send postcards. On a recent trip to Alaska my husband and I had fun finding a postoffice in each town, or mailing center. My dad had requested a postcard from each town to see if there were any cool postmarks. We try not to lug our laptop on trips with us anymore, so a postcard can be quick and easy. And fun to receive as well. I love getting them from friends and family. I also buy them to supplement photos I took.
SUGGESTION: They should make a ''postcard stamp". You could buy before you left, and that would make it easier and cheaper.

I used to be a postcard fanatic, even sending them to myself. Regretfully, I've cut back on postcards and I'm about to stop altogether, but not for any of the reasons you cited. The reason I'm stopping is that the postal service ruins the cards by the time they deliver them, if they deliver them at all. Postcards arrive torn or with the picture or message scraped and defaced and the edge curled up. Particularly disappointing is when the stamp on a foreign postcard is ripped off by the machinery. Now I send e-mails with photos attached--not as much fun, but at least they arrive intact.
Posted By Glenn on August 18, 2008, 3:30 PM
We BUY postcards with the intention of sending them. Many times we end up not writing them or not finding a post office in time so they are never SENT. They then become souvenirs of our trip.

I wouldn't dream of traveling and not sending postcards. Even if the postage becomes cost prohibitive I will at least send a postcard to myself! I have been doing this for 20 years and always include the same message."I am having the time of my life...wish you were here!! Love, J". Part of the fun is seeing how long it takes for the postcard to arrive. So far the record for the longest time from drop off to delivery was 11 weeks from Antartica!

Yes, I send postcards and like receiving them. You can read the actual words written by the actual pen of the writer and keep it forever without fear of using too much computer storage. The picture is directly in front of me without the need to print it. Printing computer images is very expensive, about 30 cents per photographic print.

Years and 50 countries ago, I used to prepare address labels so I could write postcards galore more easily. When I ran out of labels, I was done. Now most people have to wait for my albums (photos and logs) but a few people I know still collect cards receive them. Now I need fewer labels!

yes i do send two postcards from everywhere we go - one to the cancer doctor and one to our stock broker. without each of these gentlemen we would never be able to go there. it is our way of saying just that and thanking them.

Absolutely, I just love to send postcards and also love to receive them especially from far away places. The stamps are so different. I also send postcards to myself from each place when traveling and date them as well along with a journal entry and outline of what I saw on a particular day. That way I can match them to my email travel logs, handwritten journal and the photos of each place. It is a great way to organize the photos. My friends list has grown quite a bit over the years and the addresses are a permanent part of my journal. Never had any complaints from friends who get a card. Usually they would like more than one.

Absolutely do I send postcards -- I send them home addressed to my cats and will seek out cards with cats on them during my adventures. I've found some clever ones (a cat posed like the Eiffel Tower) and some artistic ones (Toulous Latrec) and some touristy ones (Tigger from Disney World) and some stretches (the lions in front of the NY Public Library). They have to have a cat on them -- it has become a game. Once they arrive I show them to my beasts -- they sniff and run their gums across them and then I post them on the bulletin board over their food bowls. They hang at cat eye level. And yes, they can read them!

Yes, but I avoid the "wish you were here" scenario. I always look for a "special" card for a "fun" message e.g. Alcatraz jail cell, writing that our rooms were only 8x10 but the view was spectacular OR a view of the Acropolis and write that "we bought a nice little piece of property on a hillside but it needs a little work".

My much younger sister has a bulletin board filled with postcards that I've sent her from all around the world. It reminds her to save her money so that she can go with me someday. I love writing them just as much as she loves looking at them.

Sure, I do. Including always one to myself. It's fun to relive a special memory when "my" postcard arrives, and it's also interesting to see how long it takes to get there from various points on the globe. The friends & family I send postcards to tell me they love receiving them -- and I love getting theirs!

Sure I do, some of my colleagues actually get upset if do not send them personal one. I travel around the world- EU, AUS, NZ, Russia, ect. on every vacation and send postcard with the most identifying landmarks for that particular country. My friends and family love it (sometimes nicely jealous)

No. Stopped quite awhile ago, and it had nothing to do with technology. Most of my travel is foreign, and postal rates outside the U.S. are usually very high. And half the time, the cards never reached their destinations anyway.

When I travel, I send myself a post card each day, summarizing the day's events and sights. It's easier than keeping a diary, and when I get home, I have fun reliving my trip day by day. I also send post cards to family and friends, and they always appreciate it.

I don't send postcards, but I buy stacks of them. I collect and trade postcards with other postcard collectors all over the world.
However, if a place I visit has a special cancellation stamp they use, I usually mail one card to myself with the date I visited there written on it.

I occassionally use them when I go on vacation. The problem is, I usually get home before they are even delivered.

Absolutely - they say "I'm thinking of you, just you" - the way a facebook posted picture never could. My college aged children love getting "real mail", and have actually asked me to send postcards to some of their friends. I probably send 100+ postcards a year, and receive maybe 30.

Sure! I even send postcards to myself, especially if it's a photo of a famous site or work of art that's hard to photograph. It's a great souvenir to be waiting for you when you get home, with a note about what you did that day. I spent quality time in sidewalk cafes in Paris, people-watching and writing postcards to friends and family. And I ask friends to send me postcards from places I've never been. I've got quite a collection.

Definitely! It is a simple gesture that thrills me! To know while in a faraway land a friend has thought enough to put pen to paper and actually send a postcard to moi! & they thought about what postcard to send me! (I love the photos and sayings & the unique stamps!) One friend of mine sends one for every destination he travels to while on buisness so I can actually have a map of the world in postcards someday! It is really fun and as others have said, more personal than an email. I send them to myself for the postmarks and stamps. as well.......

I always send postcards, domestic or international travel. Last time I went to Ireland, I sent them to a coworkers son's 1st grade class and they tracked my adventure! Great geography lesson for the kids. And it's a lot of fun searching for the post office and picking the stamps out as well as talking to the postal workers; most are much friendlier than here!

We just returned from Europe two weeks ago. It cost almost $3.00 to send one postcard to the US (with the lousy exchange rate and the commission rate factored in). I bought two and used two from my river cruise. But instead of mailing them there, I wrote them and mailed them when I returned home. Much cheaper, and they arrived more quickly. Will probably still be a postcard sender, but will post many less than I used to send.

I know its kitschy, but it's fun and the kids enjoy them no matter what generation they are. and admit it, it's fun to lord it over your coworkers that you're someone fun, beautiful and relaxing that they are NOT!!! emails just don't have the same impact of a postcard in the mail!

I enjoy sending post cards almost as much as I like to receive them. My now 15 year old nephew has saved every postcard he has received. Reviewing my nephew's postcard collection has been a great way to revisit the memories of places we've visited, as well as help plan trips we can take together.

At work, we've printed labels so anyone traveling, for any length of time, can send one back for the rest of us. We keep a huge board for a year's worth of cards, even having contests for who sends the most. Then we take them down after Christmas and archive them in a notebook. Even students who work during the summer, then go back to college get involved. It's a great way to let the rest of us know we are important!
Personally, I send postcards, generally one a day, when I travel, as a trip journal; to family, friends, myself. I collect them in a notebook. My great aunt used to collect postcards, from a long time ago, so I know how much fun having a collection is.

Postcards are some of the best photos taken by professional photographers of the most popular sites. There's nothing like receiving a card with a postmark and stamp from a faraway place with a hand written message. Then to see the beautiful photo of a famous or popular destination is a way to share the story of your visit there and compare the picture taken on your camera to the one in the postcard. Sometimes when people say that looks as nice as a postcard, you can have a tangible souvenir to agree or disagree, but you'll have the memories for sure.
Posted By Kerry on August 19, 2008, 12:54 AM
I absolutely still send them, and sometimes collect a few to augment my scrapbook pictures if the postcard includes something unique I didn't shoot myself.
I also can't tell you how thrilled I was that I discovered that my parents saved ones my dad sent from his world travels with the U.S. Navy in the early 50s of the Mediterranean, the Orient, etc.
I have asked my daughter to save the ones I have sent to my grandson for the same reason - special memories in a far distant time.

I just started sending postcards last year!
Before, I could never be bothered with the hassle of finding stamps and post boxes. However, I work on a very international project with a team of travel buffs, and last year we decided to start a tradition of sending a postcard back to the office every time we travel (for work or pleasure). After just a year, our walls are plastered with postcards from all over the world - from the fairly usual Paris and London to the fairly unusual Western Australia and Arctic Svalbard.

All of my friends enjoy getting my cards when I am off to some far off place each year. I make address labels and take instead of taking a book of addresses with me. As I send cards along it is easy to know whom I still need to write if a label is left. Some people get more than one label. Just got back from a month in Gabon and discovered that mail to USA took 3 weeks to a month. No cards sent this trip. Plus there was no place to mail.

Of course I always send postcards to my family & friends. Before I leave I print a sheet of address labels & buy postage (if not traveling outside the country) so most of the work is done.
The labels also help me know who has already been mailed a card. My niece gets several as she collects them.
I also send them to myself so I have a memory waiting when I get home & I can use them in my scrapbook of the trip.
When I did consulting for a firm that hired private consultants to travel around the world, I always sent a postcard to the person responsible for sending me to whatever place I was working.

I just got back from Europe. We went to 6 different countries, and I sent postcards from each one to friends and family back home. With the exchange rate, it was expensive. But what better way to send home a little piece of your vacation!
I have also started printing address labels- so handy and easy to send. A lot easier than bringing my whole address book!
I also buy postcards for myself- souvenirs, scrapbooks, etc. Many times they are better pictures than what I am able to take due to lighting, etc.

Postcards aren't outdated... they are classic.
The internet is a great way to share photos, but a postcard reveals your thoughts at that moment and carries the stamp and postmark of the country you are in. The internet provides no such cultural insight.
Whenever I travel I send my friends and family images of my favorite sights or things that remind me of them. Some of the postcards are treasures to them and hang in their kitchens more than a year later.
When the internet is shrinking the world more every day, long live these friendly little reminders that the world is still large and in need of exploring!!!

Love to sen them and love to receive them. I have a girlfriend who lives in London and whenever she travels on holiday she sends one to me so I can "see" where she's been (and places I've never been). Conversely, I do the same to her. She's never been to the States, so I send her cards from places I visit -- sometimes even when I do something as simple as a one-day motorcycle ride out of state, I'll send a postcard so she can see what Vermont or New Hampshire or wherever looks like.

Yes. I still send. I also take with me to show others where I am from. My family still sends cards and letters, too. They are great keepsakes from other countries. I also send and receive balloon mail from hot air balloon events and I frequent special post offices that have special postmarks (i.e., holidays, town/city name, etc.) My friends participate in all of these, too.
These can become family heirlooms.

Yep, I send postcards to family, friends, myself, and my travelling companions. The great photos and exotic stamps, plus my thoughts of the moment, are like another mini-vacation. You can put them into a REAL album (who, really, likes looking at other people's teeny beeny "digital camera slide shows"?) And, unlike coconut bras, shot glasses, mini Stonehenges and other tacky junk, postcards take up very little room, and your friends don't have to wonder how to dump them without offending you. The smart ones recycle them, or offer them back to you for your albums.

With great pleasure! to my non-computer using father right through his 80s, to my stepgrandchildren who love mail addressed just to them, to my Japanese graduate student lodger who thought the postcard with a Maine mosquito (the state bird!) on it saying "Send more tourists, the last ones were delicious!" was hilarious. I once sent a postcard as a thank you note after a job interview because I left on vacation the next day--for the job I still have. There are some things that a cameraphone or email or IMing just can't do as well as a physical card, not to mention being in places with no internet access.

I just got back from a 10-day cruise (plus a day or two either side) that had me seeing eight countries and ten cities in Northern Europe. I sent one or more postcards from each stop. Buying a postcard is a great way to help you reflect on what you found most representative of your visit, and I've found that sitting down writing the postcard -- which can be done anywhere you have a pen, even if you don't get free wifi! -- gives that moment's break so gather your thoughts and impressions. Finding a place to mail it in small towns in Poland -- now THAT'S the tricky part!

Yes, I send postcards: it is a way to let someone share in the experience of a trip, let them know I'm thinking of them, both to those with email and those without.
And I sometimes get some for myself --an easier way to get a photo, or perhaps a better one, from a viewpoint I couldn't get to, or inside a special place where photography might not be allowed. I can then add it to my album along with my own photos.

Yes, I do still send post cards. Before leaving home I print address labels for everyone I'd like to send a card to. This is usually just one page and tucks into my carry on. As I find 'just the right one' I put the label on; when the labels are gone, my task is done!

I still send postcards. My godson loves the pictures (he's 5), my grandmother doesn't use the internet, and I have a friend who collects them. I have pretty much stopped with everyone else unless I see something that really makes me think of that person specifically.

I always send postcards - trying to use the internet on vacation is a hassle and everyone loves to get "real" mail. :)

Not as many as before but if I am somewhere that I know a friend or relative would like a view of, I do. Have lived and traveled all over the world for work and fun and for many years sent cards to my mom and dad. When they passed on I found all the card I had sent in a drawer and relived all my travels by going through them. Also had a chance to see what I had written to them.

Of course! My grandmother was the avid writer in my family and I knew she liked getting mail in return, no matter the size. I sent her a postcard every week until she died and she loved the fact that I would make them out of old cereal or cracker boxes...

My nephew's teacher asked her student's families to send postcards to her class. I spent a year sending postcards and loved sharing tidbits about the places I visited. The kids learned about surfing history in Hawaii, Native American ruins in New Mexico, and bull fights in Spain. As a retired English teacher, I loved writing these postcards, and the children's teacher said my nephew's family of world travellers were the students' favorites.

Yes, I still send postcards. Especially when I'm remembering family and friends who could'nt make that trip. I send them a postcard and the postage here in Georgia is cheaper than a stamp.
Posted By Ida on August 20, 2008, 1:49 PM
Yes I do. The grandkids love getting them and when my kids were in college I'd sometimes send a leftover postcard from months earlier to them at school just to keep them guessing. It became a little joke with their college friends - they thought we traveled all the time.

We absolutely send post cards. The nieces and nephews rarely get real snail mail and get a real kick out of getting postcards. We just have to send them quickly to make sure that they get them before we get home.
We also sent emails to keep up to date.
Posted By ken kugler on August 20, 2008, 5:10 PM
Postcards are costing more with the declining dollar yet it's so much fun to be home for several weeks and get a call that a postcard finally arrived. I email my more email savvy friends along the way and actually dialogue with them, but still send a postcard. Handwritten communication is a dying mode-
kids, in particular love postcards--and my dentist has saved 20 year's worth in my file!!!
Posted By mariacr on August 20, 2008, 5:47 PM
Absolutely! I do send postcards! And not just when I'm on vacation (when I'm trying to impress people, of course!). But they're also a nice way to keep in touch!
People still want mail they can hold in their hands--even if my handwriting is atrocious and getting worse!

Since I love to receive them, and get many ideas for future trips from the ones I receive, I still send postcards, hoping that those people will also send some to me!

I adore postcards - the hunt for the perfect card for each recipient, the sitting in a sidewalk cafe with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and writing, the purchase of the exotic stamps and airmail labels, and the dropping in a postbox that doesn't look like the ones at home. Knowing that the card carries a stamp and postmark of a foreign place makes each card a little gift.
I don't care if the postcards do not precede me home; they are almost more fun if I have been back for some time. My recipients love them and always comment on how much they like to find my cards in the mailbox. Like many other posters, I may send a card to myself, or to my travel companion, posted on the last day to arrive well after the trip. I send a card to work, too, to tease my colleagues - and they do the same.
When I take pictures on my trip, the photos always include someone I love or someone I've met. It's not just another photo of the Colliseum - it's my friend at the Colliseum! If I want a nice clear shot of a particular pile, or if I find a card that is humorous or especially charming, I buy a postcard for my album.
Receiving a postcard is like a whiff of an exotic bazaar or a glimpse into a passageway to a hidden garden. There are so many places to go! I'm starting to email and do the digital photo thing on my travels, but it serves another purpose. The genuine postcard is a whole 'nother creature. Long live the postcard!

I love getting postcards you know that the person who sends it thought of you and put effort into picking and writing the right note. I also collect them to show everywhere i've travelled.......it's something that you can treasure way more than an e-mail you know that its something that the sender has touched and you can physically hold it and keep it......

We ALWAYS send postcards, and love to receive them from friends. We also always mail one to ourselves, so that when we return home and go through the mail, there's a wonderful remainder of our vacation in there (and not just bills & credit card offers).
Postcards are a wonderful and non-obnoxious means of telling our friends that we're thinking of them (as opposed to telling them that via cell phone and annoying everyone around us!).
Also, what kid doesn't love to receive something in the mail...

Posted By marilyn on August 21, 2008, 3:40 PM
Of course! In this day and age of speed and impersonal communication via email and texting, I'd much rather send and receive postcards. I have pals worldwide who send me cards on their travels from places I may have never thought of traveling to otherwise. I usually wait until I get home to send them, as I'll sometimes buy several postcards for friends, family, and pals who collect them.
Plus, a postcard is one of the cheapest souvenirs you can take home from your travels. Long after you're gone, future generations can look through them and see what a city or location looked like in the past, whereas with digital photos, unless you print them out and archive them, they won't be able to.

YES,,,,, love choosing and sending post cards. Usually about 40 post cards, more or less. Lots of people are so very thrilled to receive an unexpected post card and cannot wait to say thank you. Many friends and family look for a post card from us, knowing we will be traveling Others, not so much, so must make note not to bother them again with such sentiment. Also, enjoy taking a picture of a particulary lovely place, then if a post card shows the same area, I enjoy displaying my photo, with the post card beside it in our travel albumn.
I remember sending my first post card from New York City at the age of 5 yrs. and have been hooked ever since. Most recently from China, Okinawa and all points in between, including all 50 states.

My mom always sent postcards. I love receiving postcards. After she died 7 years ago, I stopped sending them. But recently, I have started to send them again. I love them, part brag, part sincere wish you were here, part tour guide info. Now I just send to a select few nearest and dearest. I now also send one to myself. I love remembering the trip a week or so later when it arrives.
Posted By gloria on August 21, 2008, 8:09 PM
Use the postcards as a diary of my travels. Since I collect stamps it is another way to have a colorful reminder of the trip - picture on the card, notes of how the day was spent and a great stamp and cancellation.
Friends will save the cards for me so I have additional ones to savor upon my return home.

Wow!!!
I for one am so pleased to see all these fantastic comments on postcards!
I'm a huge fan of postcards myself, but as a busy professional travel writer, I find I have less time to send them these days than I used to. They still mean a lot to me though.
Way back in February, I wrote a series about postcards on my Cool Travel Guide blog, starting with Postcards: does anyone still send them? I'm gathering comments for an article I'm writing for publication. I'm trying to inspire people to think more deeply about why they send them and what they mean. If you'd like to comment further and be quoted (or not), please see this post 'Postcard stories: share your passion' and leave a comment:

I guess I am a little bit old school, because I do send postcards. But I send them home! Since the kids were small, they would pick out postcards and evry few days they would fill them out to themselves. The purpose would be like a short journal entry about their experiences or highlights of the trip. There would often be a funny incident and that would be included in the postcard. So, years later we look thru our photo albums and find these gems and remember and recall many of the events that happened. I have continued this when my husband and I go away, since it sort of extends the vacation as the cards make there way to our mailbox after we return.

Who doesn't love to receive a post card? It is so much fun to open the mailbox and have a beautiful postcard in my hand! I think they're a thoughtful touch. Since most business transactions now take place over the internet...A handwritten note or "fun" piece of mail really make my day! I'll continue sending a few each trip I take.

I love receiving postcards. I have two large volumes of cards from all over the world. I ask the international graduate students in my department at the University of Illinois at Chicago not to bring me gifts from their home countries but to send me a postcard from their hometown. When I retire I will be able to remember them fondly!
Posted By Carol Martell on August 22, 2008, 11:30 AM
Absolutely! Not only do I send them, but when a friends asks if I'd like anything from their travels I usually request a postcard. I often send really ugly older (or older looking) postcards in hopes that the recipient(s) will get a laugh out of them and realize that I'm not trying to make them jealous. I also mail postcards to myself. It's fun to receive them after I get home and take the time to relive the trip.

I am an avid postcard sender/receiver. In fact, I have collected vintage/antique turn-of-the-century postcards for many, many years and am a member of my local Postcard Club. We have bi-annual Postcard Shows where thousands of cards are grouped by topic and fun to go through and find ones of your hometown showing how it used to look in its early days. Others celebrate events such as the anniversary of the end of the Civil War or the opening of the first airports. You may want to explore whether there is a show in your area in the near future. Have fun and keep sending postcards!

I try to always send postcards when I travel internationally. I have a set of address labels kept in my computer, so that I can quickly and easily print a set to take with me each time. It saves time, not having to address the cards, and keeps me from forgetting someone. I set aside an hour or so sometime during the trip, to take the time to jot a quick short personal note on the cards, and everyone seems to appreciate being thought of. I have many friends and relatives who do not travel, and who tell me they enjoy feeling like they are along with me, when they see the cards. I have one friend in particular to whom I promised 30 years ago a postcard from anywhere I ever went. I have kept my promise and send her one, even if it is a short, domestic trip....when I don't normally send anybody else a card. Likewise, I enjoy receiving cards from others, and always display them on our refrigerator. It is fun, imagining being in those places.

Posted By Laura on August 24, 2008, 2:05 PM
You bet. What a great way to practice those writing skills and what fun to physically share the card.
I save all of the postcards I receive and have made a piece of artwork out of the collection that hangs in my kitchen. When people come to visit me, they check to see that I have added their cards to the collection.

Sending postcards is really one of the most fun things about going on a trip. I also always send one to myself so I have a souvenir. Some tips: It's good to bring your own stamps (if traveling in the U.S.) because then you don't need to worry about finding a post office that's open. And don't mail cards from your hotel. I always find post boxes myself - postcards I've given to the hotel desk have often never made it to their destinations. Sometimes I even bring my own cards!

YES, OF COURSE!! I love to receive them, and family members who no longer travel, or who do not have Internet, LOVE to receive them, too. This summer in Rouen, France, we found a shop filled with vintage postcards; I picked out one that had never been mailed and sent it that day to my dad who served in the US Army 179th General Hospital in Rouen during WWII. He was thrilled with it. Yes, I will always send postcards.

Whenever we travel, my husband knows that I've got to get my postcards. I love to send them and my family and friends love receiving them, but when traveling - getting to a post office to buy stamps is not always an easy thing. So when traveling in the USA, I always bring postage stamps with me. When traveling overseas, I buy cards and then mail them when I get back home to the US. (I have not had much luck in having postcards get to their destination from overseas). I also have my "travel labels". I take a set of labels with the addresses already printed on them. If I am mailing a postcard from overseas and I have found a post office, I will put the postcard in an envelope and mail it. I really appreciate places that sell several postcards for a dollar.

Yes, yes, yes - my grandkids, nieces and nephews all ove fetting postcards from where ever. When I travel w/my grandson he sends cards to his mom and Nana, and one to his dad, so they can see some of the things he is seeing. When he gets home, he has several pictures to add to his scrapebook.
I just wish mail were more reliable in other countries, because I have sent postcards from "exotic" places, that never reached home, or the people I sent them to.

I am an independent tour guide and travel consultant and I still send friends and family post cards. I pre-print labels and take those on trip, as it is easy to put label on post card. I also ask the recipient to save post card for me so I can use as a picture journal of sorts. I usually describe the picture on front of card and that way I know where I was on what date and have additional details written in the message.
Cool way to journal!

Yes I still send them and like most of the comments here, I will continue to do so. It's a wonderful way of teaching children where places are and encourages them to gain knowledge on an area that they may not know anything about. It's fun to receive a call, e-mail or note from someone saying how thoughtful the post card was or how excited their child was to receive a piece of mail in their name.
For those people that pack so much into their vacation that they are to busy to a card out, why not cut your effort in half by bringing pre-printed labels. Writing the address is half the work and pre-printed ones almost guarantee there will not be an issue being able to read the address.

We always send postcards when on vacation. I will write out address labels before we go for everyone we usually send cards to. It's easier to pack than the address book & makes it easy to remember who still needs a card sent. Our son usually stays at our house to care for our pets, & even though we will contact him by email periodically he still gets a few postcards. We also will buy a few for us to go in the photo album.

I don't travel with a computer, but do frequently try to find an internet cafe to stay in touch when traveling. However, I LOVE postcards.
I take huge amounts of photos wherever I go, frequently with my travel companions as the focus. I frequently ask fellow travelers to take my/our photos with my camera, and offer to do the same for them. For great scenic shots, I buy postcards since they are taken by professionals. And sometimes you visit places where photos are not allowed, so I specifically look for postcards of those locations.
Postcards are my favorite souvenirs. I send lots of postcards to my family and friends - they enjoy receiving them - and I buy lots for myself. (I take along preprinted labels to use.) My rule of souvenirs when I travel is that whatever it is must fit in a scrapbook - the old fashioned kind with things pasted in - menus, ticket stubs, travel schedules, photos, postcards, samples of foreign money, etc. I have a scrapbook for almost every major trip. Putting them together later is like reliving the vacation again (the fuzzy photo of us with Big Ben in the background pasted next to a beautiful postcard of the same location). I enjoy looking back at them over the years and remembering the highlights of trips - and I've found that family and friends like to look thru them too!

Otherwise, it is Flickr for us, and we point people to the photos. Of course our photos are as good as those on postcards ;-) ;-)

I love receiving post cards and when I travel I always purchase them. But from there, I seem to get too caught up on my trip before sending most likely because in the back of my head I know I can post my pictures on the internet.

I enjoy writing and sending (& receiving) postcards.
Unfortunately this trip I forgot to pack my address book, so I had to login to my email to find the addresses that I have not memorized...

I travel a few times a year and I always make time to send about 30-35 postcards to my family and close friends. I'm in my 20s and definitely in the iPhone generation of relatively constant and immediate contact, but postcards are invaluable to me. They allow me to purposefully reflect on my travel experience and share those thoughts with the people I love. I find a bench or small cafe table to take in the local scene around me and share the experience with someone else. And at the end of the day, you can hold a postcard and see so much more in the card's image and the writer's words than an email could ever convey!

I've never been good at this; too busy having fun! If I go to a destination with educational value (i.e.Europe) I would send them to my nieces/nephews etc so they could see pictures, postmark and postage stamps from that country. But I don't do it on beach vacations where there is not much to report or educate about laying on the beach!

I really enjoy sending PCs because I enjoy receiving them also! Call me old fashioned, but there's something about holding a piece of mail that someone has actually written with a pen or pencil to you. That person took the time out of their vacation or trip to sit down and write to me, if only a brief note. It warms my heart.

Yes, of course I do! Not only do I send them to family and friends, but I also send them to myself then include them in my scrapbook along with my photos!

I love sending postcards to people. It's just more personal to receive a tangible card in the mail than getting an email that someone can send in two seconds. It really shows that the person cared enough to actually buy a stamp and drop the card in the mail.
Actually, I just started a website called The Smile Site where peopl can go to have a Smile Card (postcard) sent to anyone in the U.S. by mail. Please take a moment and check it out. :)

If i encounter any difficulties to find a great postcard or buy postage stamps i usually send my travel photos wiby online service www.hazelmail.com This way my friends at least get something real to stick to their fridge, not an e-mail :)

I send postcards - and highly recommend to those who do to use HazelMail.
In short, HazelMail is a service that takes digital photos and turns them into real custom postcards. The user inputs the message and mailing address, and HazelMail prints, stamps, and mails the card from anywhere in the world to anywhere in the world for a low price!
The quality is nice and they make a fabulous keepsake!
Send one today!

I absolutely still send postcards, and I like to receive them just as much. I leave home with pre-printed address labels, to make sending cards easier. From Europe it typically costs about 1.5 Euro to buy a nice card and add a stamp back to the USA. Folks who get them (especially grandchildren)seem to like them: I see them under magnets on refrigerators back at home, and on grandkids' bedroom bulletin boards. E-mail is an option I might try, but there's nothing like a postcard with a fancy foreign stamp and a really nice picture.

Yes!!! My husband and I both send cards to family and friends while we are away on a trip. I also use them in the summer time while on a trip to my upcoming kinder or 1st grade class. I say hello, have them find where I am on a map and let them know I have a surprise for them if they can show me that place on our big school map when school starts in August. They love getting mail!

I LOVE sending post cards! My sister and I have been doing it since early high school.(I'm 57 now) Once I sent 50 post cards in 2 days! It's fun to "match" them to my friends and relatives. We went to the Smithsonian one year and I bought about 60 post cards of the gems and jewels/jewelry and sent them to every woman from my church!

Being a photography fan I always enjoy shopping for the beautiful photo postcards that best match what I have actually seen or am experiencing. I think I sent about 20 from French Polynesia to family and friends last summer and they cost a fortune, but I am looking at one propped by my monitor right now that has three views of Moorea and it takes me RIGHT BACK to that wonderful vacation. You can't put a price on that feeling!!

The whole postcard process is fun for me...picking each one while thinking of who it would be perfect for...sitting in a cafe or coffee shop gazing around as I write a little note...finding the post office in a foreign city and figuring out how to buy stamps! Kids love 'em (truly don't all little kids love to get mail addressed just to them!)and adults appreciate that you thought of them while far away.

I love to travel and I've been collecting postcards since I've discovered that travelling is one of my greatest passion.
I usually send a bunch for my families and close friends and they are ecstatic about it! Well, same feeling when I received theirs.
For me, it's like sharing them a piece of that place and having them feel the joy of travelling.
It makes everyone happy!

I'm happy to see so many people are still sending postcards; I thought I was in the minority. I send them to my friends to let them know I am thinking of them, and I know they appreciate receiving them. For those who complain about the cost - if you had the money to take the trip, you should have the few bucks it takes to send cards to friends who appreciate receiving them.

I like to take postcards of my home town/state/country along on my trips and leave them behind with people I have met along the way...as a thank you to my hosts at the B&B, to share with a tour guide or the helpful taxi driver--and especially with a wide-eyed child in a far away land.....you get the idea!

I send postcards from everywhere I travel. I have a friend who loves to receive postcards and collects them in an album. I also enjoy sending postcards to my niece and nephew; they use it as an opportunity to find the place I'm sending from on a map and learn something new about the world. Finally, it's always fun to send something to my kids. It let's them know where I've been and gives me an opportunity to record a little something about my trip.

I send them to my nieces and nephews, and occasionally to family at a distance. I try to write "educational" and interesting things geared toward each child, instead of the generic "having fun." Must comment: I recently went to Walt Disney World and had a TERRIBLE time trying to find postcards. Almost none, and only about 4 that were reasonably priced vs. "collector" cards at more than $2 each! Hope this isn't a new trend.

I always make sure my son gets the addresses of his friends before the end of the year. We travel to Europe every other summer (going back this year YEAHHHHH), and all his buds LOVE getting the unusual cards with different stamps from foreign lands. It also shows him the almost forgotten (at least by most 12 year olds today) art of touching base by snail mail !!

My husband and I took a trip to Spain in January for a class, it was my first time out of the country. Even the postage stamps are different and interesting! Collecting postcards makes for an interesting and inexpensive hobby.

I buy them and pass them out when I get home. I have several albums with pages that are 4" by 6", and more than a few file cabinets, each with the name of a different loved one. Post cards are almost always 4x6, and I can also print photographs I took myself easily enough. Obviously, some of my loved ones don't live near me so I can pass them out to them, but those get stamped and mailed and I still save a bunch of postage.
I also put pictures on flickr.com. My name is big_ugly_mich Feel free to check out my pictures if you'd like.

It's wonderful to get something other than bills, junque and solocitations (and I think our letter carrier enjoys the pictures!). In fact, I keep a book of postcard stamps in my wallet and sometimes even send a postcard from locally, just because!

Funny, I would love to ask all those folks who answered "no" to sending postcards how their personal relationships are - family, friends, etc. From postcards and postage costing to much to iphone and Facebook - how cold, how clueless. Post cards are a nice personal touch - a delight to those who receive them and warm fuzzies to those thoughtful enough to send them. Oh yeah, I'm a guy, 20's and kick butt, lol.

Do I send postcards? Always! I love choosing them (usually with someone specific in mind for each one), I love writing them, I love receiving them. I've written out postcards from the deck in front of Alaskan glaciers, from the bottom of Bryce Canyon and while sitting in the courtyard of the Tower of London. Yeah, I guess I could do all those things with a laptop and a blog. But foir my pictures are never going to match a real photographer's, and there's something about getting real mail.

Unrelated to travel, I get wedding reminders and invites as postcards.

I send postcards because they are less expensive and take less time to shop for than individual momentoes. I print mailing labels before leaving on my trip and that eliminates the arduous task of addressing as many as 30 postcards. I would certainly not buy souvenirs for that many people, yet they have a tangible remembrance of my trip that does not have to be dusted!

Yes, I still send postcards. My grandchildren love to get the mail. I also send a special thank you to the people I'm vacationing with and let them know by postcard what a wonderful time I'm having with them! They're so surprised to get home and find a postcard from me! Also, to make it easier while on vacation, I preprint address labels to put on the cards. Sometimes I'm in a rush, I can just jot down a note for the area I'm in, put a label and stamp on and drop it off at the next post office.
Posted By Kate on March 26, 2009, 7:16 PM
I send one friend a postcard from every place we go. We both work for the Post Office and she is always interested in the price of stamps in other parts of the world plus the length of time it takes the postcard to get to her. Better than an email!
Posted By Marianne on March 26, 2009, 7:20 PM
Yes, of course I send postcards. Some of my relatives do have e-mail, but even those who do enjoy getting a colorful, happy note in the mail with news from another land. They put them on the refridge or other coveted place to share with others - you can't do that with an e-postcard. The time it takes to prepare a hand written personalized note sends a message far more sincere and touching than electronic communication. And, isn't that why we make contact during our personal time away in the first place?
Posted By Dusty Smith on March 26, 2009, 7:47 PM
Nothing is nicer than to receive a hand written message of an "absolutely wonderful spot", by someone who is thinking of you at that very moment. Electronic stuff is quick but oh so impersonal. I hope I always continue this time-honored tradition of sending picturesque postcards of our travels, to those we care most about. And I hope my loved ones continue sending them to me. I always post the ones we receive on our fridge, for all to see and enjoy.

I make it a point to send postcards from wherever I go. I still get many comments of "I loved getting your postcard" from the friends and family I send to. It's an inexpensive souvenier and shows people that you are thinking of them.

Postcards are a delight and everyone I send them to agrees! And sending them doesn't stand against other, more technologically correct methods
Posted By Marie on March 27, 2009, 1:26 AM
I send postcards to my two kids from every place I visit. For visits within the States, I put a different Commemorative postage stamp and from overseas I put as colorful a stamp as I can find. I then save the postcards in a book for each of them. I travel a lot so am up to 3 thick books each with a different and unique postage stamp. They may not appreciate the post card books now (or ever) but I hope their children do.
Posted By Mark Randol on March 27, 2009, 8:04 AM
Definitely! I have about 10-12 family and friends that I send postcards to from vacation. I print out address labels before I leave for a trip, and then I don't forget anyone. I especially like to send to a few friends in Europe, and they return the favor on their travels. I travel vicariously through them!
Since I also like to collect postcards, I always buy an extra one or two. Photo insurance in case my pictures don't turn out well! I also ask work colleagues to send me a postcard if they are traveling on business to another country.
Posted By MaryAnn on March 27, 2009, 8:17 AM

Yes. We love it. My husband and I send a postcard to ourselves when we go on vacation. Often we are sitting in a cafe when we fill it out. The person who writes on it second covers up the first person's comments with a napkin or something so that we don't know what the other person said until we get home and receive the card. It is a sweet way to extend the trip and reading it puts us back in the moment.
Posted By Renee on March 27, 2009, 10:23 AM
Post we will! My husband loves to take over this task, while I journal. People love to get the cards, and often return them to us, so we end up with a nice picture, too. Digital photos are wonderful, but it is fun to have the post card details, which may feature another season or weather. This is a nice way to remember and let those left behind know that we are thinking of them. Yes, we still use the computer venues!

There is nothing like opening up the mailbox, looking inside, seeing an eye-catching photograph and notes from a friend or loved one and saying "WOW". It's easy, relatively cheap and a lot less weight than taking the lap top along to send the digital prints via e-mail.

Of course I send postcards - especially to my elderly relatives who might now get much mail otherwise. I love it when people send me postcards too. I usually send one to my husband who I'm traveling with so he has mail when he returns home. It usually says something like, "thanks for the great time."
