The Paris-London train line will get faster in 2010
Posted by: Sean O'Neill, Friday, Sep 12, 2008, 11:30 AM

By October 2010, it should take even less time to travel by train between London and Paris. Air France plans to jump into the train business. It plans to offer service via the underground Chunnel connecting England and France. It will compete with Eurostar, a company with monopoly control of the route right now.

Current train times are about two hours and 15 minutes at best. But Air France plans to install trains that will carry passengers at faster speeds, bringing the trip time to under two hours.

The fresh competition with Eurostar also means that ticket prices might drop. Prices start at about $105 one way.

It's certainly not quicker at the moment. There was a fire in the Channel tunnel and Eurostar passengers are suffering awful delays. Eurostar is quite a nice way to get to Paris, but it is an awful lot cheaper - and you see more - if you go by National Express bus which takes the Calais ferry.
Incidentally the London-bound Eurostar service used to suffer from illegal immigrants getting under the train and clinging on - which must have been incredibly scary. If you are going to stow away, there must be better ways than the underneath of a high speed train.

Ian,
Thanks for your comment! Yes, the ferry is much cheaper than the high-speed train. It's also much faster, if you're on a short vacation and are traveling between England and France.
And, yes, there was a fire that disrupted service for a couple of days but Eurostar trains have resumed service.
I'm disturbed on many levels by that report on the immigrants stowing away on the train.

Great writeup thanks !. This is great news indeed !, from 6 hours in the good old days to reach Paris, to just less than 2 hours. Currently I love crossing the channel by ferry, but at the same time I enjoy Eurostar as well. Any improvements which result in getting to Paris early is definitely a bonus !
