Airline quality survey results
Posted by: Alison Rohrs, Thursday, Nov 13, 2008, 1:39 PM

This week's Airline Quality Rating survey gives budget travelers some pleasant reassurance, with low-cost carriers such as JetBlue, AirTran, and Southwest topping the service lists.

Here's the list of the mid-year winners and losers:

The Best Airlines

Most On-Time Arrivals: Hawaiian Airlines
Fewest Denied Boardings: JetBlue
Fewest Mishandled Bags: AirTran
Fewest Customer Complaints: Southwest Airlines

The Worst Airlines
Fewest On-Time Arrivals: American Airlines
Most Denied Boardings: Atlantic Southeast Airlines
Most Mishandled Bags: American Eagle
Most Costumer Complaints: United Airlines

The results above are from the first six months of 2008, the most recent data available in 15 categories from the U.S. Transportation Department.

Researchers found that overall airline performance continued on a five-year downward trend in passenger care. But year over year, the nation's major airlines improved in on-time arrivals, as well as the rates of denied boardings and customer complaints.

In addition to these accolades, American also has the dubious distinction of recently abolishing all my wife's frequent flyer miles...without even a notificaiton reminder first! Classy outfit!

If we are flying into or out or through Denver, we always fly Frontier. It is just a step above everyone else. We never fly Southworst anymore.

We had to make an emergency trip from Florida to Rhode Island. After comparing prices, we choose USAir with a quick change in Charlotte. After hearing pretty bad things about them, we were worried, but it all went smoothly. I have a little trouble walking and the golf cart vehicle was driving by and offered me a ride!! They deserve credit for doing a fantastic job.

We had a horrible experience on an Alaska flight from Portland to LA. First, they changed our seats from what we booked 6 months previous, because they could, with no apology or explanation. Then they put us in the second row from the back, in front of 3 children who kicked our seats constantly. We nicely asked the kids to stop, and when they didn't, we nicely asked the flight attendant to talk to them. She didn't. When we got up to leave, we saw that the kids' parents were sitting across from them. The father got up and proceeded to push me while waiting to get off the plane. I nicely asked him to stop. He started belittling me vocally and loudly. When my son told the jerk to shut up, the jerk tried to start a fight in the aisle of the plane! The flight attendants, standing right there, again, did nothing. Other passengers stood between my family and the jerk in order to protect us. Other passengers reported the incident to the pilot and asked that the jerk be held until the rest of us could get our luggage and leave. No representitive of Alaska did anything. The jerk followed us to baggage claim and we felt safe only because of the protection of other passengers. So much for an airline caring about it's passengers.

My wife also lost her American Airlines miles without any notice from the airline. Whenever possible, I do not fly American.

You wonder why US airlines rank so low compared to foreign airlines. It doesn't show much for the concept of service in our country.
