Video: Make a wine carrier for a plane ride
Posted by: Sean O'Neill, Wednesday, Dec 3, 2008, 4:16 PM

I recently discovered that Southwest sells a handy wine and spirits carrier for $5 a bottle/unit at its airline counters.

You don't have to be flying Southwest to buy the carrier, of course.

Are there any other good ideas out there for affordable, padded wine carriers for carry-on?

Here's how to create one out of pieces of cloth:

And how are you supposed to get the wine on the place if you're not allowed to bring 8oz+ liquids through security?

I don't understand this. Why would you need a wine carrier for carry-on since it's more than 3 ounces of liquid? This seems misleading to those who may think they can travel with wine.

You can buy wine once you get past the security gate. Gifts for the holidays, anyone?

Good news: The TSA says it expects to lift the liquids ban by next year's holiday season after it has installed new scanning equipment at airports nationwide.

I spotted these just the other day -- the commenters and I agree that these are pricey if they can't be reused.

Seems that you could easily construct something similar out of bubble wrap and tape, however, using a wine bottle at home for a model.

Even easier -- how about a large poster tube?

Ah, Thanks poetloverrebelspy, those are great tips. It really is a shame the Wine Skin isn't re-usable at $10 a pop.

Ah--I've been recommended another by one of my coworkers: The Wine Mummy is a double layer plastic padded pouch that will hold a bottle safely in your *checked* bag for about with layers of bubble padding, will hold a 750ml wine bottle and costs $5. I haven't tested it myself, though.

Last trip to Tuscany, I managed to wrap 2 Chianti Classico bottles in my beach towel and have it safely arrive, unbroken in SFO (via Frankfurt). It helps to have a hard cover suitcase too.

We've wrapped wine, olive oil, balsamic vinegar in towels (we bought inexpensive ones)and packed them between clothing and they arrived home with no problem, in softsided suitcases. Dishes too.

I have used (and re-used) Wine Mummy. They are $5 but cheaper if you buy in packs. I recently took two trips, one to Australia and one to Canada and used these bags to bring wine back and fourth with no problems. Highly recommend.

We've had great success with WineHug. It inflates like a camping mattress pad and hugs a wine bottle. We've traveled to Europe with it many times and had great luck! It's affordable, re-usable, and folds flat when not in use. Check it out on Winehug.com. It's the best invention yet!
