Flights to Israel get cheaper
Posted by: Sean O'Neill, Monday, Dec 8, 2008, 11:48 AM

How about New York City to Tel Aviv nonstop for $916? That offer from El Al is about $140 less than what competitor airlines are offering via Kayak. It's also lower than the lowest fare I found on El Al's website for a round-trip flight out of New York City for $1,027 departing on a Saturday in mid-January.

Here's the deal: Any pair of people flying to Israel this winter on the same itinerary from New York or L.A. may save by calling El Al at 800/223-6700. The deal can't be booked on El Al's website, but there's an explanation of it there.

You and a companion can book a fare of $831 (plus taxes and fees of about $84). The offer is for couples traveling together between January 1 and March 31, 2009.

The roundtrip companion fare on a nonstop EL AL flight departing from LA during the same time period is $1,171 (plus taxes and fees).

If you simply want to book a single ticket, round-trip fares have dropped on El Al from several cities, starting at $971 (plus taxes and fees) from Boston, Chicago, Miami, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.

CORRECTION 3:51p.m.: My original blog post a few hours ago misstated some of the terms of this offer. I regret any confusion.
