We are planning a family vacation to Hawaii for Christmas 2009. Prefer Kona but we love all the islands.

Cody, WY (Dad)
Virginia Beach, VA (Sister)
Hawaii (Personal vacation!)

If my travel plans pan out, I'll be heading to Switzerland to learn about "green travel." I look forward to visiting Norway in 2009.

Finally, Chicago will be the location of the BlogHer conference, July 23-25, 2009. There will be a travel blogger panel on Saturday, 25. Maybe I'll see you there?

Chicago or NYC in the spring, Edinburgh in August for the festivals, hopefully Iceland while it's still cheap(er).

My husband and I are planning a trip to Spain and Morocco in 2009. We'll be celebrating my 50th birthday and adding one more continent to the number we've visited so far (by adding Africa). Our goal of course is eventually getting to all seven.

Posted By Susan on December 30, 2008, 4:11 PM

Miami Beach for sun and dancing in the Winter, Montreal for culture over spring break and Mexico City for excitement and Spanish classes for my extended vacation this summer.

Posted By Megan on December 30, 2008, 4:25 PM

Short trips to:
San Antonio - January
Portland - April (for their Taste-of-the-Nation)
Seattle - July

More than likely three or so longer TBD trips. Could be a cruise due to the low prices, Mexico or a European trip. But it all depends on what kind of deals popup.

Ideally I'm looking for a cut rate Thailand trip similar the $699 Bali trip offered by Singapore Air around the time of SARS and after the Bali bombings. On one hand there are articles (Sunday Post) that Asia prices are up, and on the other hand a article (NYT Friday) about a huge slump in Thailand tourism after the airports were closed. We will see how the travel economy holds up.

Right now the Korea, Singapore & Bali Real Deal looks good until you tack on that mandatory $525 tax (or ?surcharge/markup? - yes it is -> $431 in fuel surcharges) fee.

My husband and I are headed to St. John in May for diving and to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons in the summer for hiking.
Maybe going to Cabo San Lucas for Christmas...we'll see what offers the airlines have this far out.

Posted By Holly on December 30, 2008, 6:12 PM

February brings Blissdom blog conference in Nashville. Hoping we can swing Ireland again in August or September.

BlogHer in July is on my radar, but we'll have to see what happens...

We are going to Italy in April for our 10th anniversary...Rome, Chianti, Positano!! We can't wait!

Posted By Amy Bolvari on December 30, 2008, 8:43 PM

I am thinking of a meditraniane cruise or Quito.

Posted By JT on December 30, 2008, 8:48 PM

Our goal is Spain, Barcelona, the Costa del Sol, Andalusia and a few days in Morocco.

Posted By Lois on December 31, 2008, 10:15 AM

Another Christmas markets river cruise ... the most relaxing trip I've taken in many years. Meandering through narrow ancient streets of Germany is like going back in-time centuries ago. Much more relaxing than a sandy tropical beach with screaming kids and sweaty beachgoers.

Posted By Pua on December 31, 2008, 10:21 AM

I'm heading to Paris and Provence in May 2009 for a couple of weeks and then taking a transatlantic cruise from Rome to Ft. Lauderdale in November 2009 with my husband. It's a 2-week cruise that hits France, Spain, and the Canary islands before the 6 nights crossing the Atlantic.

Happy travels to everyone!

I am taking 2 trips this year. The first trip is a cruise in July to Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman Island. Disney World is giving away free tickets on your birthday. So, I will spend my 50th birthday there in November and then drive down to Key West for a few days.

Posted By Karla Waugh on December 31, 2008, 10:44 AM

In March, spilling into April, I am taking a guided tour of Turkey. We begin and end in Istanbul, and will tour the Southwestern part, including Troy, Gallipoli, and Kusadasi, and after Cappadocia will cross over to Ankara, and back to Istanbul, for exactly 14 days.
In September I will fly in and out of Amsterdam, take a rental car and via Brussels, Luxembourg, Nancy, and Lyons, will head for the Languedoc area of France, from where we will take day trips to Nice and Les Issambres, then back to Amsterdam, for approximately 16 days total.

Posted By Molly Shannon on December 31, 2008, 10:45 AM

We will be taking a budget vacation to Chan Chemuyil. Staying in a 2 bedroom house near Akumal.

Posted By Alan Maas on December 31, 2008, 10:54 AM

The Cook Islands! They're on the New Zealand dollar which still provides a good exchange rate and they're much cheaper than Tahiti or Bora Bora but still have that Polynesian feel! New Zealand Air has 1 direct flight a week from LAX and we hope to really feel like castaways out on Aitutaki's gorgeous lagoon.

Posted By RobD on December 31, 2008, 11:08 AM

Hoping for a few days in England to visit relatives and see someplace new, perhaps Cornwall. Then across the Chunnel to renew acquaintances with the City of Light. In the summer, the Midwest (Ohio, Wisconsin?) to meet others who served with my father during WWII. Were there time & funds, Southern Caribbean would be our other goal to expand horizons further.

Posted By Felicity on December 31, 2008, 11:12 AM

Puerto Vallarta for Valentine's week - it is our anniversary. We're staying the the InterContinental El Presidente for 7 nights. There will be more trips in 2009, but that is the first one!

Posted By Rose on December 31, 2008, 11:18 AM

We are heading for my husband's home turf of southwestern Germany and the Alsatian region of France, with a side trip into Switzerland, this year. In alternating years, we spend our vacation time in California, where I'm from. We're really looking forward to our trip in 2009, always an adventure in history, culture, wonderful cuisine and wines.

Posted By Rebecca Jackson on December 31, 2008, 11:20 AM

We shall be going over to Anderson SC - USA - to visit with our daughter, her husband and our 3 Grandchildren over there. We've been going over at least once a year since 1997 and we love it. We usually try to get a bit of travelling in as well. This year we want to fly into Dulles - IAD -(VA) and drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway to NC then down to Anderson. We may also have a bit of time down in Savannah GA and a few days on Tybee Island, near Savannah.

Posted By Barry on December 31, 2008, 11:20 AM

As of now, plans are to travel in the USA in 2009, friends trip to W Palm Beach in Feb, girlfriend trips to San Juan, Puerto Rico in March (good air fares)and Myrtle Beach in April, Hilton Head in May with hubby, than back to Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach in Sept and Oct. The prices on cruising are great, so that is still in the back of my mind. This summer we went on a Rhine River cruise and it was wonderful.

Posted By Kathy on December 31, 2008, 11:22 AM

We are looking forward to 10 days in February at a resort in Puerto Morales, Mexico. This is on the Yucatan a short 20 minute drive from Cancun Airport. It's near a small fishing village on the Riviera Maya. We stayed at an all inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen a year ago and loved the climate any the activities like exploring the Mayan ruins. We also enjoy the laid back atmosphere of this area.

Posted By Dick Hagen on December 31, 2008, 11:23 AM

I want to to Mexico's Copper Canyon in February. It is supposed to be as fabulous as the Grand Canyon. I also want to go to Thailand as I've never been in Asia.

In July, we'll travel to Toronto for the first time to see our beloved Red Sox take on the Jays. Guatemala! First to Antigua, then Lake Atitlan, and to Flores to see Tikkal.

Regarding Iolaire's post regarding Bali on Singapore air, I took that trip and had a marvelous time. I recommend upgrading slightly on the hotel - it's a big payoff.

In January I will be going to Guatemala. It's a trip that I have long looked forward to. In April I will be heading to HOnduras with a group of friends. Every August we head to the Finger Lakes in upstate New York with family and close friends. Those are my plans so far...

My husband and I are celebrating a couple of "big-0" birthdays and our 35th wedding anniversary with a 4-week trip to southern France in April/May. We're planning a few days in Nice and about 10 days each in Corsica and Arles.

Posted By Myra on December 31, 2008, 12:07 PM

I'll be heading down the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Smoky Mountains for the first two weeks in May. I was just there in spring 2008, but I want to help the park celebrate its 75th anniversary. I'll also be doing 4-day weekend trips to Vermont and Maine throughout the year.

Since I travel solo a lot, I prefer self-drive vacations because I don't get hit with the "single supplement" penalty.

Posted By Paulette in Connecticut on December 31, 2008, 12:10 PM

-February, we'll be taking a tour of Copper Canyon from Caravan Tours.
-March will find us doing a vacation rental for the month in Bend, Oregon.
-April we'll be biking in The Netherlands on a bike and barge cruise from Bike and the Like.
-June we'll do another monthly vacation rental in Missoula, Montana.
-Not sure yet where the rest of the year will find us except we know we'll spend a month in the fall doing a vacation rental in Colorado.
I am not retired, but work full-time. However, my company was started by Europeans so every employee gets 4 weeks vacation right from the start - plus we are closed between Christmas and New Year's. For the vacation rental months, I telecommute for my job from those locations.
I live to travel and feel lucky to be able to continue to do so in this economy.

We're returning to Puerto Vallarta. PV can be a high end or a budget trip -- but on a budget you see and experience the most local color and culture. There are many charming local budget hotels ($100 or even much less) for shorter stays; condo/apartment rentals for sa week are more are good options. There are also plenty of great budget restaurants ($5-15)...to add to the sun, sand, mountains, jungle, sports, art, music, and people who make PV so special.

My passion in life is the travel the world, but I'm married to a non-traveler. We agreed that 2008 would be a "No Travel" year, but that I could make up for it in 2009. And boy am I making up for it! We've got a trip every month January-August. We're doing three cruises (Mexican Riveria, Panama Canal, Italy/France), a road trip through central Germany, NYC, Washington DC, San Antonio, and a trip to see my family. I think that he'll realize having a "No Travel" year isn't worth the price. :o)

Daily temperatures are in the low 80s, high 70s with a daily thunderstorm (the rainy season) to clear the air. It's hot and sticky at the coast but lovely in Guadalajara at about 5000 feet. And right now the Peso/Dollar exchange rate makes Mexico a great bargain. I also plan to go to Tunisia on a tour in the Fall of 2009, and, I hope to Rome for a week in April.

I've rented a house on the beach in Puerto Penasco, Mexico to celebrate my birthday with some close friends in February. It's a day's drive from Albuquerque, and this time of year it's too cold to swim, but not too cold for grilled fresh seafood, sunning on the deck, and surfcasting at low tide! Best of all, a three-bedroom, three-bath house with several fireplaces and a fully equipped gourmet kitchen is a whopping $250 per night! Keep your eye on Penasco, it's getting to be a southwestern beach destination.

I am planning to return to Ecuador where I served in Peace Corps many years ago. In 2008, I spent 5 1/2 weeks there, in the Andes and on the coast. Bus travel is still amazingly inexpensive and, if one eats the set menu noon meal as the main meal of the day, so is food. The people are very helpful. On one bus trip, the other passengers were all telling us where to get ready for a the next photo of the snow-capped volcano and the driver actually stopped the bus once so we could get an unusually good shot.

Northern Europe Cruise in late May

I currently live in Germany so I can do this all cheaply. We return permanently to the States in June so my European vacation is almost over!

Skiing the French Alps later in January (if you stick to the smaller villages, there's still great skiing and it's a bargain: lift tickets covering over 115 miles of runs for 27 euros/day, chalet hotel accomodations near the lifts for the equivalent of about $120/night). Planning a week in Israel late spring, unless the situation there deteriorates. And then? It depends on where the bargains are -- African safari (Botswana, Namibia, Zambia) if prices are right, if not, lolling on a beach in the Canaries or hiking the Swiss alps!

I spent 365 days of 2008 living out of a suitcase and revisited around 30 countries for work - loved them all but I'm just dying to go somewhere new. I want that feeling of being some place foreign, strange and exotic; I want to be disoriented and dazzled. So where am I hoping to go? Yemen, Ethiopia, Zanzibar, Mali, Libya, Iran, Nepal, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Guatemala for starters.

Back to Kas, Turkey, a beautiful place on the Mediterranean where the people are friendly, the food is amazing and for prices I can afford. It is an outdoor oriented town that sits in the middle of the Lycian Way, a 500 km marked trail dotted with ruins of ancient towns you can investigate without the tourist crowd, or check them out by kayaking along the shores. There is scuba diving, mountain biking, sailing, paragliding-pretty much anything you would want. My first time there, I took a weeklong Kayak-Camping guided camping trip with a small group through Dragoman Outdoor. One time someone submerged poster sized incredible photos of marine life and you had to dive to view them like an underwater art gallery. The townspeople built and sank a replica of an ancient ship and created an underwater archeoligic park. This place draws me back every year. A great country for women solo travellers too. Linda

Then I wait to see which of the Budget Travel's "Best Travel Deals" is affordable and puts me someplace new and interesting in autumn -- and that's where I'll be. I can't wait to find out where it is.

We hope to get to Alaska and/or Mexico sometime in 2009 and I always make sure I get to Grand Marais, MN & Canada many times during the year. We usually fit Las Vegas in at least once as well. In 2010 we have a cruise planned, not sure where yet though. Perhaps the western caribbean. I would also like to find the time to make the entire trip around Lake Superior - I think I need 3-4 weeks for that, however.

India- for my 6th visit. It is simply the greatest show on earth. And you'll never see it all. And once you've got the airfare, it's cheaper than staying home. Every variety of religious and spiritual expression is to be found. And the rest of the world will always seem easy to handle.

2. Island hopping cruises are also super cheap (1/2) of what they would be in on season...

My "Budget Travel Discovery": no extra charge for traveling "single" if I booked before mid-February - a savings of $845! Whoopee! I travel alone most of the time, & it's VERY RARE to find a deal for us singles - we're usually paying 25-75% EXTRA for the privilege of a room to ourselves rather than sharing with a total stranger.

I am thinking of going to Spain, while there, take the train to go to France and Italy, depending on how long my vacation is in 2009, because I have never been to Europe.

A trip I could go on again, which I went on in 2008, is to Nicaragua. The place is beautiful and very inexpensive and there is a lot to do for ecotourism.

I am also thinking of taking a short trip to Mexico, the dollar buys alot there right now.

Trying to work it out to see if we can financially swing a sailing that will take us to ANtarctica...not the 'sail by' on one of the mainstream cruise lines but one of the 'expedition'/soft adventure/ice cutter type of ships that hold ~100 pax or so 'cause I definitely want to do some 'landings' on the white continent!! Great music in Athens, GA!

I lived overseas for many years and love long-haul travel but of late my husband and I have tried to enjoy spots closer to home that are easy to reach and economical - and that we have overlooked all this time. Plus, we love a "park-and-not-move-the-car-for-three-days" town. For nummy food, funky shopping, and city nightlife in a small town, we'll be popping over to Athens regularly this year.

And maybe even my niece. Have been there so many times -- no two trips the same. Just love it there and as the children get older, the fun just keeps growing!!

My girlfriends and I usually pick a HOT spot Mid August. This year we are looking into Costa Rica, Cabo, Grenada, or some other Island.
I already promised my 4 year old son a trip to D.R. (Even though he keeps telling people we're going to E.R.)
And for my birthday in November(feel free to send gifts), we have a large group cruising Italy.
There are a couple extra weeks of vacation I have available, and I am searching websites and maps daily.

We're headed to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. We found a 4 bedroom vacation rental in Kitty Hawk off the website, www.GetMoreVacations.com, and it includes golf rounds at Seascape, a dolphin cruise, a tour with the wild mustangs that live on the Outer Banks and a beach set up every day. My friend told us about the site - they used it to go to the panhandle of Florida. My husband is a pilot and we're looking forward to seeing the Kitty Hawk park.

We're going to Australia for 3 weeks in mid-February. My wife has family there and has wanted to go gofr years and this year several things happened to make it the right time. Airfares on Qantus really dropped out of LA so we saved quite a lot there. The Aussie dollar really dropped against the US dollar ($1.50 AUS to $1 US). And we had frequent flyer miles for a free domestic trip with AMEX which we used for the Iowa to LA pat of the trip. It also means getting some warm weather just when we really need it.

We love traveling in Alaska. This year we will be experiencing a special treat and taking two trips out of Wrangell, AK with Jim Leslie of Alaska Waters, to AnAn Bear Observatory and then up the Stikine River on their Glacier Tour. You might say we are "addicted" to Alaska and will get up there as often as we can. This year is the 50th Anniversary of Alaska's statehood!

We did Cody, Wyoming, last year and need to revisit the wonderful Buffalo Bill Museum, plus enjoy Yellowstone and possibly Glacier. Also hope to pick up some regional Scottish/Celtic Highland Games.
We will also do a grandchild hit of Disneyland early in the year. Lots of travel bargains out there, and we hope to be able to use some of them!

I am planning to travel to London this summer. I Would like to visit The British Museum, Tate Modern, The London Eye, The Tower of London and of course the famous London Bridge. While I have almost decided to book a flight through a high street travel agent in my city, I am still struggling to find a good way to book a reasonable accommodation online (Travel agents in my city are quite expensive when it comes to London Hotels). While trying to make a hotel reservation I have checked out Expedia.com which seems to be quite cheap, but when it comes to the final booking page, the booking fee is quite high. Same is the case with Travelocity, HotWire.com and RightReservations.com though last one is quite cheap as compared to others, but due to the current tough times, I am looking for an even better deal on hotel reservations. After London I plan to spend 3 days in Edinburgh, Scotland. I'll probably stay close to the Princes Street near the Edinburgh Castle. From there I can embark on a Sightseeing city tour via bus. I'll then go to Glasgow to catch the 'back to home' flight.

Going to El Salvador .AGAIN !
What an incredible country ! Absolutely stunning in it's beauty .Around every bend of the road there was another jaw dropping view and around every corner there was someone greeting you with a Buenas Diaz ! and a smile . This is the most untouristed and friendliest Central American country I have been to . No begging or harassment to buy souveniers .
I did not have the luxury of time to explore as much as I wanted, hence..a return trip required .
I want to see the volcanos and parks and cloud forests again and stay in the beautiful little colonial towns (Suchitota and La Palma.)I visited . ( I had stayed in San Salvador which was perfect as it is in the middle(kinda, sorta) of the country and day trips were an hour or two away .
I really wish I was there now especially with snow on it's way here !

Our family is planning a scuba diving trip to Cozumel for Spring Break. My daughters are 16 and 13 and will be diving in salt water for the first time. It should be an adventure of a lifetime for them. Then my husband turns 50 in November, so I am taking him to Ireland for an eight day driving trip starting in Dublin and ending in Shannon. It will be his first time there. We can't wait.

We are taking many short trips and one long one. My husband and I are taking separate "friend" vacations (long weekends) for the first time in our 7 year marriage, we also have a few weekend trips planned to just get away together and a couple of longer trips to visit friends and family around the country (Tulsa, San Antonio, Sedona, Palm Springs, etc.) But our big trip this year is that my husband is taking me home to Ireland. I have never been there and he wants to retire there next year so we are planning to go for Christmas so that I know just what I am getting myself into, lol. Luckily, I have always dreamed of living there and am very excited.

We WERE going to Cabo in early March. Only the Kissimee, Fla.-based timeshare co. refuses to honor reservations made a year previous without a stiff, new and unannounced fee hike - which smacks of fraud. Our plane reservations were also made and pre-paid.

So now we're not going.
