Cruise savings: The time is now
Posted by: Laura MacNeil, Friday, Feb 27, 2009, 3:34 PM

This deal from Travel Leaders that recently landed in my inbox underlines what Dan Hanrahan, president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises, told me when he came to our offices last week: The time to go on a cruise is now. In reaction to the economic crisis, cruise lines are squeezing their suppliers to lower costs, but they aren't cutting back on amenities and inclusions. You're getting the same as you ever were—but for a lot less, Hanrahan told me.

There's a glut of a new ships on the market, so cruisers can get top quality at a bargain. In November, Celebrity launched its newest ship, the Celebrity Solstice, and it's rolling out the second of its Solstice-class series, the Celebrity Eclipse, this spring. Even these brand new ships are on sale. Hanrahan specifically mentioned that Alaska was seeing some of the biggest discounts. If you've been waiting for a good time to see ice flows along the Inside Passage, you can’t find a better moment to book than this summer.

We booked an Alaskan cruise in May 2008 for a June 20, 2009 sailing for my mother-in-law's 70th birthday...we booked four cabins (one being a junior suite) for our family (three right next to each other). When I stumbled across the same cruise (same line, same ship, same week) on a major airline's Web site in late February 2009 for $1,200 less per cabin than what we paid, I immediately called our travel agent and told her what I'd found and asked what they could do. She said she'd call me back. Well, after talking with the cruise line, she was only able to get each cabin reduced by $850, but at least it was something (we had not yet paid in full for the cruise, which allowed us to get the lower rate)! If you don't ask, you'll never know. But the deals appear to be out there!

We went on a cruise to the Caribbean (Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire). We got a great deal on our cruise booked 6 months before departure, though later we saw a better deal. We called our agent and she could make up 300$ of the 500$. Not everything, but we still got a good deal. Just monitor the deals and contact your agent to get a better deal!

We are frequent Princess cruisers. We got an unbelievable low price on a 30 day South American cruise from Los Angeles to Rio de Janiero leaving on Nov.22, 2009. Our obstructed ocean view cabin was only $1697, with government taxes and tip included it figures out to be only $74 a day per person!
