This weekend: Toast your sweetheart in Oregon

Impress your sweetheart this Valentine's Day with new talk about "earthy legs" and "a fruity finish." The Willamette Valley Wineries is promoting itself this weekend with an I Love Oregon Wines event.

Almost 40 wineries will be hosting tastings and open houses in the region, which is well known for its pinor noirs. Amity Vineyards, for example, has an event about pairing chocolate and pinot noir from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. At the Montinore Estate, you can take a free tango lesson before tasting a few wines.

By the way, Oregon has plenty to toast in 2009—the state turns 150 on Valentine's Day, and there will be events going on all year.

Tastings are usually around $5; that's often waived with a wine purchase. Get full location and event details here.

What a perfect place to highlight for Valentine's Day! The Willamette Valley is stunning, and the wineries there are such beautiful, romantic retreats. So glad to see the state highlighting this too often overlooked area.

The Willamette Valley of Oregon is indeed romantic! But you should know, it is even more romantic on weekends when there are not major tourist events going on, not to mention cheaper.

Most tasting rooms are still open on these non-event weekends, and don't charge for tastings. (We always buy a bottle or two anyway, usually whatever is on special.) The tasting rooms are far less-crowded, and I enjoy taking this time to talk to the tasting room host or even the winemaker.

There are some good lodging deals in the Willamette Valley, like the romantic Bookmark B&B in Salem that has a room or two for under $100. My favorite place to stay is Gahr Farm.

I have visited in spring, summer and early fall, and while each season is wonderful, I am particularly fond of fall there, which is harvest season. Try biking the Willamette wine region for a fun romantic weekend.
