No joke: Pets-only planes, from $150 per animal
Posted by: Alison Rohrs, Wednesday, Apr 22, 2009, 3:33 PM

Airline service appears to be going to the dogs—and cats. Pet Airways has recently debuted as America's first "pet-only" airline, with cats and dogs as the sole passengers.

The company aims to alleviate the worries of travelers who have to transport their pets in the cargo hold, where animals risk dangerously high or low temperatures and poor ventilation. With Pet Airways, the cats and dogs will relax in a "Pet Lounge" at the terminal and ride in a carrier-lined cabin during the flight. An attendant will check on each animal every 15 minutes and see to regular potty breaks.

The pint-sized planes—also adorable—are two-propeller passenger aircraft with the seats removed. Aside from the crew, no humans are allowed on board, but owners can watch their pets' travel progress online.

Introductory fares start from $150 per pooch, but expect average prices at about $250 each way, which seem a bit high to fill regular flights. Flights will supposedly be on Tuesdays, with the first departure planned for July, with service connecting Delray Beach, Fla. with L.A., Denver, Chicago, New York, and D.C. (We're a bit skeptical, though.)

The company hopes to expand to 25 cities in the next few years. The owners say every dog has its day…

This is amazing! There is such a need for this with all the horror stories i hear about pets traveling. I would never put my pup in cargo and I am so happy i can take him with me now!

They've been saying for a while now that the airlines have been going to the dogs...

SNAP!! I love this country and the folks with the great ideas... Now if they would just do the same for the crying, seat kicking kids!

A wonderful idea -- beats putting the poor things in cargo. I'd use such a service for transporting my two dogs.

Ditto on the kids!

This is great! I just wish they were in Atlanta. Recently, my friend flew Delta and paid $275 to fly her 2 cats as baggage. It was the worst experience for her, because she was so worried.

I thought the economy is bad!!! what is this? i have a dog and I love animals but I cannot believe this.

Ryan, maybe you didn't read closely...owners aren't on the plane.

Such a good idea! I would NEVER fly my dogs in cargo(thank goodness they're small enough to fly under the seat). If I had bigger dogs I'd definitely take advantage of this. When compared to the cost of say a week-long pet-sitter or kennel, the price of bringing Fido along on the family vacation might make financial sense, too.

Great idea !!!

Great idea! I just wish they would go international because i don't knkow if i can take my dog (really big) with me next summer to my destination. My dog is jealous because my cat is small enough to fly

Don't be fooled folks! It's a prop aircraft...you know the kind with propellers...ever flown in a wind/snow or rain storm in one of these babies? SCAREY SCAREY SCAREY...takes days to get from the East Coast to the West...

It's about time some people recognize that we love our animals like kids and they need to be comfortable when they fly also. Pet Airways please come to Minnesota soon!!

Really $250 each way, I was quoted $900 for a round trip from LA to Denver, are you serious?

I flew my English bulldog from LA to NY in october of 09 via petairways. It was a great experience for both my dog and I. However, when trying to book a flight back to LA from NY in March of '10, we have a different story. Firstly, I tried to book his flight in march online and was unable to. I called them and received a call back the next day saying they were not flying during the month of april due to adding new cities to their roster. We put off our flight until Now, when I tried to book a flight online for him again. They didn't have any open dates, so I called again. No answer. They returned my phone call the next day explaining they would only be flying at the end of June. I tried again to book a flight for the day they said they were available only to see they price had DOUBLED to $600 for a one way trip since October. Upset, I tried to call them again, No answer. I called 15 times and they NEVER ANSWERED. I decided to just book the flight online but guess what? After entering my CC information, the page had an error and prompted me to re enter my information. I tried one more time and it had an error again. Now I sit here, possibly having 2 $600 charges on my credit card and they still won't answer the phone.

Frankly, I'm fed up with this airline. I should be able to reach someone on the phone, what if my dog was on the plane and I wanted to ask about his well being? And why the heck did prices DOUBLE in 6 months? I'd ask them, but I can never get anyone on the phone.
