In April, Expedia eliminated its online airfare booking fees temporarily through this month.
Today the online agency stopped charging these fees for good.
Travelers may save as much as $30 per car, hotel, or flights for bookings made via expedia.com bookings. (But phone bookings will now cost $20, reports Dennis Schaal.)
What's more, Expedia has eliminated change fees and cancel fees on hotel, rental car, and cruise bookings. The same is true for flights, except for flights that are part of vacation packages will still have change fees and cancel fees.

It's great to see fees going down instead of up for a change. Now, if the airlines would only dump the baggage fees that were supposed to be because of high fuel prices. Seems to me fuel prices have been down for quite awhile now. Kudos to Expedia for giving us some good travel news.

I agree elimination of the booking fees by Expedia and the other sites is great news. It doesn't make sense to pay for the privilege of buying something, especially when you can do as well or better on the airline site itself. Where Expedia seems to excel is in packaging air fare and hotels -- I recently bought round trip airfare from Chicago and 3 nights at Le Meridien hotel in Barcelona for less than $900, single occupancy -- rack rate for the room alone was 300 Euros. If Expedia has eliminated the fee for booking these packages, that will be an additional savings. This is really the only circumstance where I will use Expedia for booking an air ticket however -- if some problem occurs with the itinerary, the airline will not do anything to help because they didn't issue the ticket, and Expedia is too rule bound to help.

Last February, I booked a trip to Puerto Vallarta for June through Expedia. The price seemed fair at the time. Since then prices have fallen like ripe coconuts. I called to see if they could offer any discounts and was given a resounding "NO". I bought the insurance, just in case I needed to cancel, but they said that I could not change my air fare, only the hotel. I asked if they could throw in anything (airport transfer, baggage fee, a beach towel, etc) because I feel a little silly for booking so far ahead and having to pay more. Again, the answer was "No" they were not willing to give me a break. With that being said, I will be leery of booking in advance regardless of whatever fees they will no longer be charging. I would have saved significantly if I had only known what would happen in the travel industry. I am VERY disappointed in Expedia. Just my thoughts for whatever they are worth.....
