Tel Aviv's birthday party is coming to New York City

If you aren't able to make a trip to Israel this summer, a Central Park simulation may fill the void—free of charge.

On Sunday, June 21, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., an artificial beachfront will be featured at the Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park for the Tel Aviv Beach Party, celebrating the first Hebrew city's first hundred years. Expect to find Israeli bands and DJs, games like matkot (beach paddleball), traditional Israeli foods such as shawarma and falafel, and 1,300 square feet of sand.

Free, except for food. No tickets are necessary. To get to Manhattan's Central Park Mall, find 72nd Street if you're coming from the West Side, and 69th and 72nd Streets if you're coming from the East Side. The event is wheelchair accessible and open to all ages.

In Israel itself, Tel Aviv's centennial celebrations will take place primarily during its Blue Festival from June 17–18 at the recently-renovated parks and ports of Yafo, Israel, just south of the city. The Blue Festival will launch the Yafo Slopes, a new park connecting the sea with the city, and the newly renovated Yafo Port.

Some quick background on the event: The actual anniversary is April 11, but it's more fun to celebrate during the warm weather. Tel Aviv was the first modern Hebrew city, though it obviously predated the birth of the state of Israel.

While I've always looked up at this site for travel ideas, I am fairly disappointed by this ad. There is a lot of missing information here that your readers need to be aware of.
Tel Aviv was built in 1908 when the first Jewish settlers arrived in Palestine. This led to the expansion of the Zionist movement which led to the 1948 creation of the state of Israel, which in turns resulted in the displacement of 800,000 Palestinians. This city that you are celebrating is the agony of another people. Up until today, Israel continues to oppress the remaining Palestinian population living in historic Palestine (Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip). Our media presents only once picture which is the Israeli side, which leads to a total unawareness, or worse, victimization of Israel, which is far from the truth. The policies that Israel in conducting today is similar to the South African regime during Apartheid. Would you have posted an ad in the mid-1980s to celebrate Cape Town? I doubt it. I urge you to reconsider advertising for an event that led to one of the gravest injustices of the 20th Century and that is negatively affecting the US in the world today, given our complicity with Israel.

Sam, darling, get your facts straight. I completely agree about our media providing a one-sided view, but Tel Aviv was established in 1909 (hence the centennial..) by a group of Jewish families - some immigrants and some families that have been living in Jaffa for centuries and were being attacked and pushed out by their Muslim and Christian neighbors.

Sam,

You should probably read a book regarding the history of Palestine b/4 spewing absolute falsities because its fairly obvious you have no undstanding of Middle East history. 1st off you should check the facts regarding 1908, b/c it is known commonly that Jews have maintained a presence in Israel for thousands of years. Second, present day Israel was for the most part unihabited in the begining of the 20th century due to the copious amounts of marshland. Once Jews started to immigrate in larger numbers and began working the land, Arabs from neighboring countries began to immigrate as well, to try to find work. You should also know that the displacement of the Palestinians was due to the simultanoues invasion of 5 Arab armies to try and destroy the newly created Jewish state after the arabs rejected the prospects for a state of there own. Read a book before insulting a population who has done more for humanity, womans rights and freedom in 60 years than any other country on earth, while constantly being threatened by the 22 Arab countries that surround it.

So I assume Palestinians will be banned just like the beaches in the real Tel Aviv.
Also since when did traditional Middle Eastern food become Israeli food?

JS, Palestinians will be banned just like Jews were banned from their Holy sites in Jerusalem under Jordanian (here's a Palestinian state) occupation until 1967. They also will be banned if wearing suicide vest.

And "traditional Middle Eastern food become Israeli food" since when Arabs started to claim Jerusalem, an ancient Hebrew capital, which NEVER mentioned in Koran,
as their "capital". Got it?!

JS -

As an American, I have been going to the Tel Aviv beaches since 1973 and have never seen an Arab (now some of them are called Palestinians) banned from the beaches, shops or clubs. If they were (as you presume), then we would not have had the suicide bombing of the former dolphinarium ON THE BEACH (dolphin show like in Florida), which killed many young people, or the suicide bombing at Mike's Place, a club/bar ON THE BEACH and frequented by Americans, and around the corner from the US Embassy (which is one block up the street from the beach).

Before Tel Aviv was developed, there was nothing there but sand, and if you check historical pictures you will see the proof.

In light of recent events in Riverdale, I hope there will be adequate security. At least bag checks and patdowns as appropriate, i.e. heavily dressed people in warm weather. I wouldn't put it past some crazies to come with suicide vests.

I can't wait to go to the celebration.
There will always be the anti-semites just like the one who just wrote his comments. Guess you have forgotten that Jews have been in Israel for thousands of years.
