Video: How to order coffee like a Roman
Posted by: Kate Appleton, Friday, Jul 17, 2009, 11:34 AM

Stopping at the local bar for an espresso comes naturally to Romans. But this quick ritual can be intimidating for visitors. The way you order and your choice of drinks have little in common with the experience at your neighborhood Starbucks.

Watch the video that Massimiliano Navarra and I filmed at Rome's Tazza d'Oro for tips on how to caffeinate properly—including the difference between a latte macchiato and a caffè lungo and when never to order a cappuccino.

Awesome and so true. Been there - done that. This is helpful for those not in the know. Don't miss the granita di caffe con panna. Delicioso!

Very informative, however the myth that you should never order a cappuccino after 11 a.m. is just that. I have never been refused a cappuccino at any time of the day. And what cover is there to blow.....I AM a tourist, so what's the big deal??

Thanks for all your comments!

Joe the Tourist, you're right that it's not a big deal if you want to have a cappuccino in the afternoon or evening while in Rome -- your order should be filled without a hitch. But the video is about ways to experience coffee as Romans do, and Romans consider a cappuccino to be a morning drink.

Nothing made me feel more like a real Italian than our morning stops at one of the coffee bars along the autostrade. I loved ordering at the register along with all of the people on their way to work. Actually a high point of my trip!

David! How do you stir in the sugar the right way? Will be very grateful :)

What a nice reminder of my time drinking cafe in Rome. Thanks for the nostalgia. It took me a while to realize I had to pay first, but it was wonderful.
