Samsung DualView TL220 lets you look twice
Posted by: Amy Chen, Thursday, Aug 13, 2009, 3:03 PM

I rarely get this excited about tech gear, but this morning at a Samsung press preview, I didn't want to let go of the new DualView TL220 ($300).

Due out next month, the 12.2-megapixel "smart" camera has two LCDs: a 3-inch touch-screen on the back and a 1.5-inch front display.

The front screen lets you take better self-portraits while on vacation or when updating your Facebook profile. (Oh, the vanity!) When you turn on the self-timer, the screen goes black and bright blue numbers count down "3, 2, 1." Now if you want to get in the shot, you don't have to run back and forth. Plus, none of your friends can claim they weren't ready.

To make kids look at the camera, the child mode on the front screen shows an animated clown cartoon. (For kids who are afraid of clowns, Samsung will have other downloadable videos to swap out.)

Also new is the TL225 ($350), with a larger 3.5-inch LCD screen. As with the TL220, the touch-screen technology means you can delete pictures simply by drawing an X with your finger. Both versions record HD video, and have a 27mm wide-angle lens and a 4.6x zoom. Ships to major retailers the first week of September, but Sears.com is taking pre-orders.

Personally, the last time I was this thrilled about a camera was when Nikon streamlined its swivel-lens technology on the Coolpix back in 2002.

it's brilliant i like when big companies think of small problems and solve them , like making a kid to the camera or you counting the self timer and telling people to set ready , it's small problems but when they solve it they make the camera more perfect and of course when consumers prove that this small ideas is worth there money the other companies will do the same or maybe solve another small problems to make the camera more perfect than ever.

it's a great step in developing digital cameras made by 1.5 inch lcd

Looks cool. How much?

The camera has a suggested retail price of $300.

do you know the answers to the following? if it is launched on sept. 4, does that mean it will hit stores that same day like dvds? or even cooler, will online retailers do like amazon.com and ship it before so that it arrives to your home exactly on sept. 4?

I checked in with Sears.com and am told: "It is the cooler option! Online pre-orders will ship around 8/27 to arrive to customers by 9/4, but many customers will get their cameras before then." Thanks for reading!

I own the Nikon swivel Coolpix and have loved it, but I need some new technology. The shutter lag has become unbearable. Is there no swivel camera currently on the market?

And you didn't comment on the picture quality or optical zoom. The lens looks pretty big. Does it take a nice photo with minimal shutter lag?

This is great! I can buy one with the last $300 on my credit card, then take a self portrait standing in front of my house when they foreclose on me....

Newsweek should not be compromising its reputation by allowing its journalism to become PR. Shame on you, Amy, for pushing the fact that you still have discretionary income in our faces.

Can you say "Bread and circuses"?

I have the Nikon Coolpix S4 and have also been frustrated by its shutter lag, especially when using the flash. While playing with the Samsung TL220, I snapped photos with and without flash and also in macro mode. I was pleased by the results.

Great, another useless, cost-increasing, hardware-complexity increasing innovation just like the smile-detection feature in some Sony cameras.

How often are you going to use the 2nd display? How do you keep greasy finger and Cheeto crumb prints off the display? It is right where you grip the camera body.

I just would like to commend Samsung for ingenuity and smart features. I found my Samsung camera to be one of the best I've come across in several years.

Hi! You said that it won't be in stores till the 4th of september, but how come some websites seem to have them available, are they for real or does it tell you at the end of the payment that it won't be available for shipping till the 4th? I really need to know as I'll be going back to London early september. I really want this camera. Thank you!

does this camera have a viewfinder. these LCD screens are the devil to read in the outdoor light. we just returned the new Coolpix for that reason. Even at full illumination, we couldn't see the image so we couldn't compose a pix. Also, what is the focus-shutter lag time.
tks,

I just purchased this camera on 9/15/09 and so far so good great quality pics, still playing around with it because it doesn't come with a full manual you will have to insert disc on computer to get more detailed info, but does come with a short startup manual which is not that helpful. As of right now, i am pleased with it. Will update with more as i learn .

Hey..So my gf wants a new camera and the new samsung dual is the prime candidate. I need to know..Is the retail price fair compared to the way the camera works and its features.?..If anyone can send me an e-mail with a good answer or source..I'd be quite thankful. Thanks.

My bf got me this camera for my birthday and I absolutely love the quality of the photos. I've had a few digital cameras in the past and they have been pretty good too but this one takes photos that look like a professional camera could have done. So far the only issue I've had with it is that it froze a few times and I had to take the battery out and put it back in for it to start up again. I'm going to take it back to the store and get it checked out. I've barely had it for 2 weeks. Other than that I'd say the second screen is great and the photos come out crisp clear.

I love this camera and i want to be a photographer when i grow up but it looks so expensive. I have been shopping around for the best price on the web and so far it is $247 but the site looks pretty street so i don't know if i want to give them my credit card #. Does anybody know of a place that i could get it new for under $250?
