Going on safari. Spending a week on a private island. Climbing Kilimanjaro, driving cross-country, floating the Grand Canyon… We call them Dream Trips, and every year we publish a special issue dedicated to making them real. As we get ready for the next installment, we'd like to know: What's your dream trip?
I'll start: My dream trip is a sea-kayaking excursion in the Galápagos, and I'm hoping to do it in the next year.
So share your dreams with us! You may just find the perfect Budget Travel itinerary in an upcoming issue…
Also: How long would a trip need to qualify as a dream trip? How would you be willing to sacrifice in order to make your dream trip happen next year?

My dream trip would be a trip to the Seychelles Islands to go diving, island hop, and see some of the most beautiful tropical forests in the world.

I'd love to do a luxury safari in Africa...you know, the kind where you sleep in beds nestled in tree branches above the savanna.

Sorry, this is not an itinerary but my dream trip would take some time - i.e. more than two weeks.
I would like to read some discussions on how to make your dream trip happen well remaining happily employed before and after. What I'm interested in is some strategies for asking a six month sabbatical from companies who have no formal sabbatical plan, some quotes from employment analysts/consultants on how to position such a request so that you don't get left behind, and a few real world examples from people in high productivity companies who successfully did this...

My best friend is a resident doctor in Virginia, and I haven't seen him in over a year. He gets a week off in next April, and my wife and I were wanting to go to Egypt with my friend for 7 - 10 days on a Nile cruise through Egypt to see all the sights we learned about in college together. That's my dream trip.

Besides agreeing with Iolaire McFadden... My dream trip is to see the Japanese countryside by Train! I'd travel from the snowtop mountains in the North (Hokkaido) to the warm South. Along the way taking in Hot Springs (Onsen), Zen Gardens, Temples and Scuba!

My dream trip would be anywhere I could go for longer than 10 days. That is the longest that I have ever traveled somewhere. Other than that, I don't say dream trip, I say reality trip, because if travel is made a priority to someone, it can happen (well except going to the moon, that seems to be expensive and difficult.) I guess I would pick the most obscure place that I want to go to that I have not yet: Easter Island.

I was stationed in Darmstadt, Germany from 1989-1992. I hope to take my family there for their first visit to Germany during Spring Break at the end of March, beginning of April 2010. I am working it now. I have a family of 5, so I am looking for an apartment to rent. I am hoping that plane tickets come down some, and I am looking for deals for a station wagon car rental. While there, I hope to see my family experience the people, food, castles, rivers, etc.

Landing at the southern end of Italy and traveling the whole way north...following the path my dad took during WWII. What a tribute this would be to him.

#1 I've driven all around Ireland, so I'd like to rent a cottage on the north coast (Donegal or Antrim) and just walk, walk, walk and live like a local for at least 3 weeks.
#2 The Greek Islands. Any way. Any shape. Any form.

My dream trip is to drive my way all over New Zealand, and do all the adventurous activities there, including hiking Milford Sound. I heard you can either go with a guide or do it on your own. There are two huts (I think) along the way. I'm not an avid hiker, but I would love to do it at a leisurely pace and enjoy the fantastic scenery. Two weeks minimum for this trip, and that's rushing it!

I would love to take the around the world cruise. I would be able to see a lot of places, travel well, and never be without comfort. My next dream trip is Disney World without a budget. I would stay in the nicest hotel room, pay for all the special tours, and be able to afford 80 bucks a ticket a day just to enjoy being there.

Well, after I win the lottery I'd like to get a 65 ft sailboat and hire 3 cute sailors (and a chef) to sail me around the world. I would be able to catch up on ALL my reading. We would stop & shop at all the nice ports with no real time limit. Hopefully, we'd pull into Rio de Janeiro in time for Carnival - check out Copacabana Beach, get a massage on Ipanema Beach. Then, onto Buzios (still Brasil)and ALL of the smaller islands in between. I love the people of Greece - so I would like to cruise over there to see the islands I haven't seen and spoil myself with all of their yummy food and delightful hospitality. Also would have to go to Australia to check out the cleanest water in the world, and their award-winning coastal chardonnay. I lived on Kauai, so we'd have to stop by Nawiliwili Harbor & ask if we could park it for a couple mos so I could catch up with all my friends. Not really sure when I'd make it back home. You did say DREAM TRIP, didn't you???

I love traveling anywhere, and have been many places, but what I would most like to do is fly to Europe, travel from one country to another until I got tired of it all and am ready to return home. I am retired, which is a plus, but at my age, my time may be running out. Still, I count my blessings that I have been lucky enough to have seen so much of the world already.

My dream vacation is renting a yacht and exploring the Greek Islands for a few weeks.
I am fortunate enough to be taking a Mediterranean Cruise next May but its not the same as making your own schedule and sailing to wherever you want. Maybe one day!

I have to agree with Eve that any trip is a dream trip especially since my husband got laid off in May and all our travel plans, including an 80th birthday trip to San Fran for my mother-in-law, have been postponed. My absolute dream trip would be about a month in The British Isles. I would spend at least a week in London and then spend the rest of the time going to Scotland, Wales and Ireland. I know that's a lot to cram in a month but unless I win the lottery that is probably all I would be able to afford (hopefully).

My dream trip is to travel the USA in 2 years for my 30th birthday! I want to go to the small towns of Iowa, stop at the Grand Canyon for awhile, make my way to LA, back through Texas, up in the holler of the Appalachian Mountains, to the Hamptons, and maybe stop back home in Ohio. I still have the kid in me that truly believe's dreams do come true!!! Can't wait!!!

Ever since I traveled the eastern end of the Silk Road in 2001 (Beijing to Islamabad), I've wanted to visit Central Asia. I'd love to start in Iran, and then work my way through the five central 'stans (seems this is not the time to include Afghanistan). Ideally, I'd head into China (likely by train to Urumqi) and take the Karakoram Highway into Pakistan for the second time, going on to India, but again, that seems not to be a good idea right now. Instead, I'm thinking of taking the train to Tibet and then entering India via Nepal.

Ever since I went to Tanzania, Africa and saw the dig site at Olduvai Gorge (which is the "Cradle of Mankind"), I have gotten interested in Archaeology. So my dream trip is seeing all the ancient sites in Egypt and in fact doing some digging there too.

I agree with Denise - my dream trip would definitely be an extended stay in the British isles. England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are some of the most beautiful countries in the world, in my opinion, and a week spent every couple of years is not near enough time to fully appreciate them! I'd love to see many of the major cities, the vibrant coastal towns and even some of those rare treats that are 'off the beaten path', so to speak. =)

I'd like to follow one of the following:
General Washington's or Cornwallis' American Revolution (not in the time they spent, obviously, but hit all the battlefields either hit), or
Sheridan's, Grant's or ideally Lee's campaigns of the War Between the States.
I'm also working on a book of several NFL teams, one defunct and one that moved, that play or played on a specific US highway. When I can, I'd like to do something similar with baseball and basketball teams.

My dream trip would mirror the movie Out of Africa. I want to go on the train from Mombasa, fly over the African game, tent on the plains and view as many types of animals as I can, then spend a few days at William Holdens's Mount Kenya Club. My second fantasy trip is to ride down the Grand Canyon on a donkey then ride the rapids out.

I'm going on one of my dream trips this Christmas, with my husband. Two weeks in French Polynesia... one on land, visiting Moorea and Huahine; and the other week on a chartered sailboat (just us), visiting Bora Bora, Raiatea and Tahaa. I have a feeling it's going to be hard to top that one (for me anyhow).

My dream trip would be one month with my husband, a Eurail pass, and our backpacks. We would hit as many countries as we could and would stay at small B&B's along our way. As a theater-lover, I would love to see the theatrical history all through-out Europe.

My dream has always been to visit every country in Europe, including all of Great Britain. I've done lots of genealogical research and have found my roots in England, Ireland, Switzerland, Scotland, France, and Germany, and I think it would be really great to visit all those places! I'm also a photographer, so I'd want to stay long enough to get some great photos of the awesome scenery along the way.

my ultimate dream trip: 6 months to a year circling the Mediterranean. By train, boat, bus, and foot. Every country, no exceptions! I have no idea how I would ever even begin to make this a reality though - saving the money, dealing with a full year not working - i may be young and idealist, but I don't want this to just be a pipe dream! Would be a great feature to have in BT - how to make a long-term dream trip plan!

Screw vacations, I'm planning my retirement - learn Dutch fluently (I understand about 60% without formal training), get citizenship, and take my retirement over there to open my own coffeeshop, probably somewhere in the countryside or towards the south, like Eindhoven.
For now, though, my #1 vacation goal is to get on the autobahn in a stickshift and see just how fast I can go, maybe make my German completely fluent while I'm at it. Then take a cruise down the Rhine to Münich in time for Oktoberfest.
Some other things/places I'd like to see before I die are the aurora and australis borealis, Japan, Estonia, Lake Baikal, Greenland, Montreal, Chile, Australia/New Zealand, and India (total sucker for vegetarian Indian food!).

Our dream trip would be to take some friends who share the same interest all over the world where we would be able to view wildlife that can't be seen in the wild in this country, for example Mada-
gascar for lemurs, the Amazon for all the indigenous critters, Churchill for polar bears, Costa Rica for birds and butterflies and frogs, eastern or southern Africa for all that it holds,
Galapagos, Australia and New Zealand. Also in this country, humpbacks in Petersburg and brown bears in Brooks. Also, most importantly we could meet local folks and learn their cultures and customs. We would have to win a huge lottery soon, since we are in our 70's. Time's a'wastin'!!

I would agree that the list is really too long to mention. As one ages there seems to be less time to see all the places we would like, and because of the economy it' s even more difficult now, but we just have to continue to do it while we are physically able. Greece, Turkey, the rest of southern Utah on the eastern side, back to Italy to stay in Tuscany or Umbria or...Switzerland, Austria, Germany, all of the British Isles, the list is endless. I loved all the places we have been, but the world is soooo large and we will continue to dream.

I have wanted to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu. My challenge now is that I have advanced breast cancer so I deal with some fatigue and such from the chemotherapy. I hope to find a trip that can accommodate someone like me who may need to go at an easy pace, if there is such a thing on that trail. I've heard that some guided trips may provide that type of support. I have a strong spirit, its just that my body doesn't keep the same pace! I hope I can make this dream a reality in this coming year.

SO many dreams! Mine sounds awfully plebian by comparison, but I'd like to drive across the U.S. on the old Route 66, starting at Michigan Ave. in front of the Art Institute in Chicago. With side trips, of course, to see things like the Flint Hills tall grass prairie in Kansas and the Grand Canyon.
I'd also like to canoe the Everglades from the Gulf Coast to Flamingo.
I have a suggestion for those wanting to travel through France. Go in September, and rent a canoe and camp. A friend and I paddled the Vézere, which flows through the valley where many of the caves with paleolithic paintings are located. Lascaux is in a little town right on the river! No traffic, no crowds, no bugs. Just perfect weather, great food & wine, chateaux, bucolic settings . . . THAT turned out to be a dream trip!

My dream trip would be to visit the Abruzzi area of Italy. My father was the first one born in America, and all our family came from Pescocostanza, Abrruzzi, Italy.
I just lost my father last year, and one of my biggest regrets is that I did not go to Italy with him to see our family's homeland.
He went twice with my mother, and spoke with great love of his family living there, along with seeing his mother and father's home. He visited his uncle's home, saw the area where family members were Resistance fighters, visited a family winery - so much that is part of my heritage.
I would love to visit this area, meet my extended family and see those sights that were so important to my father. I would like to do this in loving memory of a wonderful man.

Delicious breakfast including fresh seafood would be awaiting us on the yacht and we would sleep, sun and lounge onboard during the daytime on the way to or docked in our next port of call.

OK it's not cheap, but we are dreaming, right? Los Angeles - Singapore - Jakarta - train/ferry across java to Bali - fly to Melbourne - then on to New Zealand. Drive south and take ship to Antarctica. Come back via Ushaia and Buenos Aires. I think it can only be done is US winter.

I went on my dream trip 2 yrs ago to Italy. I worked hard to save my money to travel first class. We flew into Rome where our driver was waiting for us. He took us to Positano, where we stayed 3 days. We also took a boat over to Capri while there. What beautiful scenery. On to Tuscany for 4 days. We spend one day in Florence. We stayed in Montefulicano in a village. Ate the best food I have ever eaten. Then we spent 2 days in Rome. Wow. It was amazing, took a bus tour around the city at night and walked around during the day. Amazing area.

Guanajuato's "Festival Cervantino" has been held every October for the last 37 years. This year's Festival will be from October 14 to November 1st. More than 2300 artists from 25 nations will participate. In 2009 Montreal and Zacatecas are the guest cities. Guanajuato was named a "world heritage" site in 1988. My dream trip will be to report this magnificent event whose objective is to bring accessible cultural events to its citizens

I've always wanted to go to Venice, Italy and for the past year or so, I've been owning up to this dream and even changed all my PC passwords to Venice09, Italy2009 and variations thereof. Now it's already been changed to 2010 - but I know someday I will get there! My boyfriend and I have been making plans, but we will definitely ride a gondola, explore the streets and canals of this romantic city and then visit the churches in Rome.

I'd love a beach vacation in February for my husband and I to relax from our stressful jobs and my teenage son to have a good time, too. Some place "real" with good food, clean rooms and nice people.

I have been working on my "bucket list" for about five years now. Galopagos, Machu Picchu, the Amazon, and Costa Rica all done. However, the trip I get truly excited about is Angkor Wat. I want to visit Vietnam, and The Ankor region of Cambodia. This trip is more challenging because I am having a hard time talking someone into going with me!

i have two dream trips..one reqyures planning and the other requires none.
I have dreams of visiting Ireland with friends or someone special and not planning anything..having enough money and time to just explore whatever we can within say 2 -3 weeks and till our money runs out. I would love to discover wonders along the way and head to the UNESCO heritage site on extreme point in Ireland.
The planned trip would be to travel with my family (parents and sibling) along the luxurious train in Rajasthan, India and stop at all the colorful towns along the way. This state has mountains, deserts, history and so much more to offer..It's a lovely place to visit.

Freeport, Nassau, and Paradise Island are not the true Bahamas. I'd like to spend a month, preferably in the wintertime, exploring all the Bahama Out Islands I can get to; Andros, the Abacos, the Exumas, Eleuthera, Cat, San Salvador, the Biminis, etc. via a chartered small boat cruise, or rent something centrally located and ferry from there. The plan is to snorkel my brains out with a little relaxing and local culture in between. I might even invite some friends and family to join me.

Dream Trip #1 (there are many!): Diving, touring and cruising southeast Asia. I would start in Bali, then dive in Wakatobi, maybe do a liveaboard for a week. Next up is Singapore and Kuala Lampur, then on to Bangkok with a stop afterwards in Phuket (more diving and beach time). Finally I would have to stop in Hong Kong for a few days, just because.

I have always dreamed of going to Tahiti. Tahiti, moorea, Bora Bora and Huahini but it is just way too expensive when you travel by yourself. Have tried every which way I can think of but it is unbelievably expensive!

I want to go back to Africa for the 3rd time as a single traveler. This time, I want to spend 5-7 days exploring each of the following parks: 1)canoeing the Okavanga Delta in Botswana; 2)living with other animals in Chobe National Park in Botswana, and; 3)visiting Kruger National Park (perhaps staying in Sabi Sands) in South Africa. I do NOT want to revisit Victoria Falls; once was enough!

My Dream Trip is going to Paris with my 3 siblings. We grew up very poor in a small New England city in a French Canadian neighborhood. We always dreamed of going to Paris and knew it was a dream that could never happen. 3 of us have been to Paris against all odds. Now we want to get the 4 of us together and see the neighborhoods our ancestors lived in. What a great dream to have.

my husband and I are always joking whenever one of us asks a question "where are you going?" Sometimes we answer "To Tahiti". So my dream trip would be to surprise by husband with a cruise to Tahiti and/or a week in one of those bungalows that jut out over the sea. he can scuba dive and I can sit under a cabana and read to my hearts content.

3 weeks in Myanmar. It was beautiful. Just enough tourist infrastructure to get around easily. But off the tourist path, especially US tourists.

Before World War I, my grandfather was in the British Merchant Marines and sailed around the world on their ships. He compiled a scrapbook of postcards of where he went. I think it would be really interesting to sail where he sailed and then compare the postcards to what each port looks like today.

The best holiday for me would be to travel around the continent of Australia. I've lived there before and have seen a handful of sights but there is much (mostly in the red center) that I've yet to explore. Ideally, I'd travel with my husband for six months.

2dream vacations - one would be to travel to Africa and see the Silver Back Gorillas - a sort of Jane Goodall experience - live in tents, enjoy living among the animals.
The other is to stay in a villa in Tuscany for a month - live with the people, shop at the market, enjoy the beaches, the wine, the food.

I have 3 dream trips: 1) Antarctica, and a trip where I could afford to take the whole family, my niece and nephews would love it. 2) Greece and sailing the Greek Islands. 3) Like someone else said, win the lottery and travel the world at my leisure, so much to see. 4) My dream is to move to New Zealand, too bad the work visa is so hard to get and I'm "too old" (42) and don't have a job in high demand, I'm told my best chances is to marry a Kiwi!
I love to travel and have done a fair amount, especially overseas, any chance to travel is a dream. I'm headed to France for 2 weeks in October, yay!

My "dream" trip would be a constant one, retire... and just travel. No budget, just go where ever, when ever. I plan to see as much of the world as possible (as time and budget allow) before I die. The list of destinations is endless but I try to go to at least one new place that I have never been at least once a year. Most of the time it's in my own "back yard".

I went to New Zealand when I was young and fell in love with the people, scenery and range of things to do there. Now I would love to have two weeks to take my husband to see the country. A little bit of adventure, fine dining, and luxury mixed in with quiet time together hiking, fishing, touring and getting to know each other again without our four children tops my long list of dream trips.

My dream trip is to Antarctica! I want to see the ice caps & penguins, and stay in a hotel made of ice and sleep on an ice bed. It can't be TAHT much worse than a bad Minnesota winter! *wink*
I have been fortunate enough to have gone on a few "dream vacations" including an African safari in Kanya; Australia; and some of Europe (predominantly Italy). I work two jobs in order to afford my travel addiction, and although I only travel once every couple of years, it's definitely worth every hour I work! :)

For 20 years we've been trying to go to Europe. Health problems always got in the way. We are finally leaving next week for a month. We are flying in to Amsterdam after a couple days we begin our Eurail travels, 3 days in Brugge, lunch in Luxembourg on our way to Alsace, 3 days at a B&B on the wine road in Alsace with a side trip to the Hohenzollern castle near Stuttgart, 2 days in Lucerne, ride the Bernina Express to Varenna for 2 days at Lake Como, 3 days in Florence, 3 days in Siena with side trips to Tuscany and Umbria, 4 days in Rome with a side trip to Tivoli, 3 days in Cinque Terre, 1 day in Milan, and home. We are finally going to experience our Dream Trip. But I'd be happy to take another dream trip on someone else's dollar.

OMG !!! I would love to be able to take my 80 year old Mom and my 3 kids to Austria to visit her roots. My grandparents were from Austria, coming to America at the turn of the 20th century. What would I give up to do this? Well I don't have a job that pays much at all ( I'm a pre-school teacher!) and to be honest , there's never any extra money so it may be a long before I figure that one out!

My dream trip is to go to the Galapagos. The only thing holding us back is my terrible seasickness. My husband wants to take a trip specifically for photographers, and those are all boat-based. We are doing lots of whale watching trips to test different medications and the longest I have lasted is an hour.

My dream trip is to go on the Earthwatch Expedition "Discovering Italy's Ancient Roman Coast." I would spend two weeks on the central Italian Coast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. It would be fabulous to help archaeologists excavate Poggio del Molino and preserve this part of Italy's maritime history. Populonia was one of the most important trade centers in the Roman Empire - this gave rise to iron smelting, Roman Expansion into Africa, the Mediterranean, etc. I can only imagine being part of the effort to discover and excavate - before developers, looters and the environment takes it away.
