Like a hipper, budget-minded version of Yelp, wherescool.com is a network of in-the-know friends who will point you to surprising spots in just about any city.

What we like
Our favorite find so far from the fast-growing new community: Echo Park Time Travel Mart, a retro kitsch shop in L.A. that also houses a children's writing workshop kicked off by the McSweeney's crowd. Member Charlie is a fan of its dinosaur eggs.

Maybe someday, but not today. I joined in San Jose CA just to peek at it. Interface and functionality is nice but there isn't one place up here listed. I'll stick to yelp. I want to find places, not be the only one to write about them.

I live in New York and was able to find a ton of places just in my neighborhood, let alone the whole city...very cool indeed!

i find yelp kinda nameless and faceless and this site is sort of like having a BFF in whatever city you're planning on traveling to..i think in time it will rival facebook for making friends and connections with people in foreign cities.,

I love wherescool.com! I joined right after they launched the site and it's been neat to see it grow, but we need more members, so please spread the word!

Have you been to Yelp? How can it be nameless and faceless when most people give their name and put up pictures?

James obviously has never used Yelp (for the reason T gave).

How is this new service any different than other review sites? How is it any different than Yelp! (other than not having the same level of coverage or depth).

I am not one to knock a service. I use Yelp because Yelp works for me. It has always worked for me and I actively search it out when I need to find information. I don't need another web-based service.

This is like replacing Google (which has worked for years) with Bing! (which is not as cool and it trying to replace Google).

Really... sigh...

Oh - just checked the site - my town does not even have a listing. Yelp has over 100,000 entries for my area...

Sigh again...
