Save/ShareA new museum opens its doors on October 1 to celebrate Walt Disney as an artist, visionary, and man, not Walt Disney the theme park or brand.
Oddly enough, the Walt Disney Family Museum won't be located in Orlando or southern California but in San Francisco, in the Presidio. Admission to the museum is available via timed-entry tickets, and it's recommended that visitors buy them in advance at WaltDisney.org. With a timed-entry ticket, you get a 15-minute window (say, between 10:00 a.m. and 10:14 a.m.) in which you can arrive. Tickets might not be available at the door.
What's there to see? A blog post from SFWeekly.com offers a sneak peek, with photos from the museum including a scale model of EPCOT, original sketches of classic characters like Dumbo and Mickey, and some of the Academy Awards won by Walt (including seven tiny Oscars Walt had specially made in honor of the seven dwarfs). The museum will also host classes, films, and special family programs.
General admission costs $20 per adult, $12.50 for kids ages 6 to 17, and free for children under 6. To find out more or to buy tickets (up to 60 days in advance), visit WaltDisney.org.

I hope the museum exhibitions are more exciting than the photos in the SF blog. Nothing stood out that catered towards the kids...maybe that's coming soon.

Eric, this museum isn't supposed to "cater towards the kids." If you want to entertain children, you're still better off taking them to Disneyland. This is a museum dedicated to the accomplishments (many of them technical) of Walt Disney and as such, is of a decidedly more mature subject.

The museum is for more for adults aged 40+. It's definitely not a museum for the kiddos although there are some interactive things for them and maybe some other things to entertain them briefly. There is a lot of reading involved and lots to see, so you need to be able to take your time. Things that stand out in my mind are antique jewelry Walt Disney bought for his daughter and wife, a sketch by Dali, and a composition on note paper by Diego Rivera. These are things you will not find at Disneyland!
