We tried to rent bikes while in Paris in June. After trying at several stations for several days with no luck, a Parisian finally explained the difference between American and European credit cards. We were disappointed.

Very nice video. I had no problems last year using an Amex Blue card which contains a chip compatible with the system. The Velib bikes are a wonderful way to get around Paris.

Why do a piece that is limited to the relatively small percentage of Americans who carry the AMEX Blue card. Budget Travel info should be directed to the masses.

When my daughter and I were in Paris in September, we did the day AND night bike tours with Fat Tire Bike tours. They leave from the South leg of the Eiffel Tower.
The tours were excellent! Great English speaking guides.
The night time tour let you take in all the "city of lights". The day tour gave us alot more history.
We loved it and will certainly go back again!

As noted, you can ask someone to buy a pass--one doesn't need the card each time. You get an ID number to use. It's great--spent a week in Paris w/o using the subway, which amazed me. Great map (carte de Velib) at newstands/tobacco stores covers district by district bike locations, easy bike streets
