I had a wonderful experience at Versailles Restaurant. Great prices for huge amounts of delicious Cuban food in a rococo meets diner atmosphere that's beyond unique. It even gets a glowing review from the famed "3 Guys from Miami" blog! http://3guysfrommiami.com/versailles.html

Versailles is very cliche these days. I prefer less crazy restaurants, such as La Palma on Calle Ocho and 62nd Ave. They've been voted the best place for churros over and over again, and their other food is to die for, particularly la vaca frita, lechon asado, and other classic dishes.

Last month I stayed at the Fortune House, a condo / hotel in the Brickell area, right down the street from the Four Seasons. It offers one and two bedroom "suites" (read apartments) with full-size kitchens and balconies with city and/or water views starting at $99. Furnishings are pedestrian, but comfortable and flat screen televisions abound. Good gym, nice pool deck and an on-site cafe with food that is better than you expect and prices that are cheap by any standards. Plus at $20 a night, the valet parking may be the best deal in Miami. If you don't have a car, public transportation is steps away and it's and easy stroll to the trendy Mary Brickell Village with its shops and restaurants. I'd happily stay there again.

I'm a big fan of Barton G. The Restaurant on the Beach, which is truly a Miami original with the most amazing food presentations. With careful ordering it can be quite reasonable because the portions are huge. But at the new Prelude by Barton G., a more refined, but equally stylish restuarant in downtown Miami at the performing arts center, you're guaranteed a good meal for under $40, because you get any three dishes - any combo of appetizers, entrees and /or desserts - for $39. Two apps and a dessert? My kind of dining. There's also an a al carte bar menu. And the wine list is amazing. Supposedly the largest selection of wines-by-the-glass in Florida, which you can get by the taste, half glass or full glass. Makes experimenting fun and affordable.

Versailles on Calle Ocho (SW 8th Street) is a classic establishment for cheap and delicious Cuban food. Hard as it may be, save room for dessert - the tres leches cake is amazing. Other swear by La Carreta across the street and at a number of other locations. Tropical Chinese on Bird Road across from Tropical park serves wonderful dim sum for lunch. Two can eat for about $25.

The Versailles is where a lot of local Cubans eat. You can't get a bad meal there. ALso very affordable. La Carreta across the street is also very good. An affordable hotel is The Cadet. Although it does not have a pool, it enjoys a great part of Collins Avenue. It is very nice, clean and would stay there again.
