Attention all parents: Help!
Posted by: Nina Willdorf, Editor in Chief, Monday, Dec 21, 2009, 10:29 AM

I'm going to ask you to temporarily set aside your philosophies about babies and cell phones and television and guilt and all that good stuff. My bottom line philosophy with parenting and travel is this: I do whatever works.

So I've got a couple flights to catch with a squirmy one-year-old later this week and I'm on the hunt for some diversions to download to my iPhone. Last night, I loaded up on Peekaboo Barn, Baby Piano Lite, and Baby Flashcards.

Trusted Budget Travel readers, I'm counting on you…what am I missing?

My clever daughter travels with a 2 yr old. She uses a long scarf to tie on all sorts of baby toys, small books, etc. When the baby is fussy she pulls out the long scarf from the diaper bag, hands it to baby ...no more fussing, and no toys dropped or lost.

Bubbles
bubble wrap
koi pond.

These are all simple animated, tap-and-enjoy apps that a one year old could handle.

My daughter (now 4) loves ShapeBuilder (a simple jigsaw puzzle game) but that might skew too old for a one year old -- it was easy for her at 3, though.

Drawing programs like Sketches or iDoodle2 would probably be age-appropriate apps

When our son was a toddler, he had ear problems in airplanes that would cause him a lot of discomfort. To avoid adding his discomfort to the nearby passengers, we would play a game called puffy cheeks. I would pinch my nose and puff out my cheeks and he would mimic the moves. It helps clear pressure on the eustachian tube and made him feel better.

Don't forget to charge your phone. Games are battery drainers and you don't want your phone to die just when the baby needs a distraction most. There are battery operated "emergency" chargers you can bring on the plane with you.

Get a Kennington battery charger for an extra battery, you can charge it through any USB port [either the battery or both the battery and iphone at the same time]. It costs about $40 at Bestbuy. It is small about an inch long and the width of your iphone.

More important is to get to the airport early and request a bulkhead seat, or call and request it if possible. Most planes these days have basinets that fit into the bulkhead seats and those seats are normally reserved for families with small children on a first come basis. For a long flight [i.e. to Europe] it is a godsend.

Our 23 month old daughter loves the Duck Duck Moose Apps including Itsy Bitsy Spider, Wheels on the Bus, and Old MacDonald.

My 21 month old granddaughter likes Preschool Arcade, Colorama, Smack Talk, and I Hear Ewe (just to name a few that have not been mentioned). We are an iPhone exclusive family!
