Baby on-board! Southwest Airlines confirms that a baby was born in mid-air today on flight 441 from Chicago to Salt Lake City. A local NBC News TV station reports that "a medical service on the radio helped a doctor on the plane delivery the baby."
The plane made the unexpected landing in Denver and was met by an ambulance. UPDATE: Here are some more details from the Southwest blog post, "An Early Arrival".
Names for the baby boy were tossed around on Twitter, including Sky, Midway, Turbulence, and—(my favorite)—Peanut.

If a child is born on an airplane, what's his place of birth and citizenship? Here are the answers.
In October, a baby was born up in the skies during an AirAsia flight. The mother and child were awarded free air travel for life. But U.S. airlines rarely give free lifetime passes.
UPDATE: (5 p.m. ET) Travel funnyman Mike Barish suggests that a great gift registry item for the li'l one would be from the SkyMall catalog: The Pirate Ship Retro Rocker.

The How Stuff Works link is a hoot. Especially the one on how pregnancy works. If a lady gives birth on any Southwest flight I'm on, I want free drinks and an upgrade!

I thought that pregnant women were discouraged from flying after about the 7th month, for this very reason? when I was pregnant, I was told not to fly, especially after the 8th month. Did the mom have some compelling reason that she needed to travel?

"What a great experience seeing a baby born on a plane" Are you kidding me???? Some of us would be soooooo less than thrilled to witness, let alone hear all of the screaming associated with such an event. I agree with the poster above - I would want free drinks and an upgrade at the very least if I had to sit through such an ordeal! I wonder if the women who give birth in taxi cabs on the way to the hospital are offered free taxi rides for life. Ridiculous.

Do you really think that these women WANT to give birth on a plane? I'm sure they would be even more uncomfortable with the above men watching her give birth to her child, then they'd be.
Women are discouraged from flying towards the end of their pregnancies precisely to avoid situations like this, but babies sometimes decide to arrive earlier. My friend's baby arrived over two months early. Labour started when she was on her way back home, but she made it to the hospital. Lucky her.

My twin sister and I were born at five months, close to four months before we were due, and my mother wasn't even aware that she was going into labor until she went in for an ultrasound. This woman may very well not have been far along to consider it dangerous to fly on a plane, but the baby had a mind of its own. I wish the woman and her baby boy the best of luck! And hey, this is a story that he'll get to tell his whole life. :)
