Are passport prices about to get more expensive?
Posted by: Brad Tuttle, Friday, Feb 26, 2010, 11:36 AM

It's probably wise to buy or renew your passport soon: The price for either service may be going up by $35.

Nothing official has been decided. But, as the L.A. Times reports, the price hike has been proposed. Currently, the State Department charges $100 for a new adult passport, and $75 for a renewal. If the proposal gets the OK, those charges will go up to $135 and $110, respectively. Other fees are also expected to rise, and new fees are being considered, as the L.A. Times explains:

Fees would also increase by $5 to $10 for the cheaper passport cards, and a new fee, $82, would be charged for adding extra visa pages to passport books—a service that is now free of charge.

If and when the fee increases occur, the public may or may not be given some time to pay for the services at the old price. If there is an interim period when travelers are still allowed to pay the less expensive fees, you can expect extra-long waits due to the onslaught of folks trying to save that $35 (or more).

The moral is: If you've been hesitating to get a passport, or to get your passport renewed, it's probably best to stop procrastinating. With a little pre-emptive action, you could very well save some money, time, or both.

I guess that means I should be getting mine renewed sooner than later as it is about that time. $35 seems like quite the rate hike to me.

With their insatiable appetite for new tax revenues to spend we are lucky they didn't double the price. It is a lot like the post office, another government organization, increases in price with a corresponding decrease in service.

Just paid my 75.00 for renewal, but by next renewal darn 110.00 or more?
See the Feds just Suck & Suck & Suck.

Just went to the L.A. Travel show where the Passport folks told me that the charge for extra visa pages begins in March. We sent ours in the very next day and got one back today. Ah, nice new pages for free! We were told the charge is $85.00 each.

With the current state of the economy, each government agency is attempting to identify new revenue streams. While I dislike this practice to the extreme, I understand it. Passports are good for 10 years, so it is still a good deal- but again- sad that we must experience price increases. I have not heard if the increase is to supplement current funding or to be designated for maintenance of our National Parks. Either way, price increases are inevitable.

I can't believe the whining! "The Feds just suck and suck and suck." So what's an extra $35 over 10 years? $3.50 a year which can be re-couped by buying one less latté.
If you really want to complain about government spending, how about the waste in the military and the refusal to honor doctor's bills from other countries for Medicare folks. The cost of medical care in the US far exceeds that in ANY other country!

The only thing creative about the feds is that they keep finding new ways to take our money. Even the $100 is way too high. Fortunately, next fall we can vote a lot of the jerks out of there. Will the new guys learn from the past mistakes? Will they ever wake up?
