Well, I'm sure this is a huge surprise! My favorite island getaway is Orcas Island, one of the San Juan Islands in Washington state. This pastoral island is patchworked with swatches of farmland and small island villages. The largest of the San Juan Islands, Orcas is about 60 square miles, but you can cover the main roads by car in just a few hours. That is, unless you pull over every time you see a sign that says “Pottery.” (I’ve obtained my favorite coffee mugs and serving bowls this way.) While there's very little sandy beach here, it's rocky beaches are fantastic to explore for starfish and other cool creatures, and there are several miles of hiking trails on the island where you can explore its lush forests. Truly, one of the most beautiful places.

My favorite island getaway is Bora Bora. If only it were closer to where I live!! But then it wouldn't have the same appeal! This is not just a honeymoon destination; families would enjoy the water sports, the hiking, the outdoor markets, the historical landmarks, the shark and stingray feeding excursions, the art galleries and more.
When you land at the airport and board the boat that awaits to transfer you to your hotel, you are immediately transported to a paradise of the most beautiful blue lagoon you can possibly imagine! You are absolutely still as you look around you and allow the beauty of the scene to draw you in to its magical tranquility. Its lush vegetation and craggy volcanic peaks are eye-popping. The earth is the color of bittersweet chocolate and rewards its inhabitants richly with a kaleidoscope of produce. The sea yields many riches as well: unbelievable varieties of fish and of course the luminescent pearl. The locals are gentle, friendly and take great pride in their island which is incredibly clean, especially the lagoon! If you know the paintings of Paul Gauguin, you will see that he has captured the beauty and spirit of Bora Bora and its sister islands. Its beauty is spiritual; how it makes you feel is unforgettable. You feel blessed to be there!

Madeira Island. Mountains, valleys, beaches, hiking, European style, quaint villages, sun, hotels, restaurants. Everything!

My favorite island is St. John, US Virgin Islands. It is the smallest island of the US Virgin Islands, but it is very beautiful. And there are tons of things to do! With the many beaches there, there are plenty of opportunities to snorkel in the coral reefs and see lots of beautiful tropical fish. You can also go kayaking around some islands. One day you can go to the main town, Cruz Bay, and get some local shopping done. Another day you can go to the Annaberg Sugar Ruins and learn about the history of St. John. St. John is a beautiful island and definitely my favorite island in the world!

My husband and I are divers, so we've done quite a few island vacations in our day, and our favorite thus far (hands down) is Santorini, Greece. The island truly has something for everyone--the opportunity to do nothing and relax in one of the many amazing caldera hotels, hiking, diving, swimming, sailing, and wine tasting to name just a few. To top it off, the fresh Greek cuisine is AMAZING.

Since you said Getaway, I'd have to say, South Padre Island. As long as you avoid Spring Break, Easter, & Bike Week, it's pretty laid back most of the time. It's just a slower pace of life, down there. Fresh seafood, Tex-mex, Chicken Fried Steak, Ice cold beer, & Margaritas are easily found. A seemingly endless beach that's within walking distance from anywhere on the island. At it's widest point, it's only 5 blocks from the bayside to the beach. As soon as I cross the bridge I know it's Decompression Time.

For faraway getaways, you can't beat any number of Greek islands (Santorini, Paros, etc ) for the food, snorkeling, sight-seeing. For the USA, Kiawah Island, SC, voted often as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by many travel magazines, lives up to its reputation. Great beaches, of course, but an island small enough to explore, large enough to insure privacy and solitude, and when needed, an escape to nearby Charleston, SC, a fabulous destination city for just about anything. Be prepared to enjoy an island paradise that is carefully maintained between lovely home sites and well preserved wetlands and wild areas for deer, alligators, and bobcats plus numerous water birds, eagles, etc. A nearby off island shopping village serves up the most unbelievable variety of foods and general shopping areas.

My vote goes to Jicaro Island in Lake Nicaragua. Not as popular and well known as the other islands mentioned above, but incredibly peaceful. Views of the Mombacho Volcano, Colonial Granada and the other hundreds of "isletas" round this up. Just 20 minutes by boat to Granada and easily reached from Costa Rica. Look a the website for pictures. www.jicarolodge.com

My favorite for a complete getaway from routine life and routine thinking is One Foot Island which is a small motu in the Aitutaki lagoon in the Cook Islands. There is one simple house there which can be rented. Except for a noontime visit by a couple excursion boats on weekdays there is nobody on or near the island. One of the boats will take your grocery list and bring your supplies the following day. The lagoon is perfect for snorkeling, although a couple unsupervised teenagers killed the giant clams which lived in the clear blue waters near the house. But you will see eels, transparent fish, and some coral. You share this magical solitude with one cat and a few chickens. The coconut palms are incredibly photogenic.

My getaway Isle would be Big Island Hawaii.
2nd is Kauai.
3rd Jamaica?
Big Island near Kona HI.

Kauai, hands down. The beauty and diversity of the island is simply unparalleled, and you feel like you belong there from the instant you arrive. You can hike all over the island and spend an entire day kayaking along the Na Pali coast if that's your thing, but there's no shortage of pristine beaches where you can relax, sip a drink, take a dip in the ocean, and watch one magnificent sunset after another. And the food! There's no better brunch, lunch, or snack than saimin and lilikoi pie at Hamura's in Lihue.

I agree with Elaina...St. John is the best! But don't tell anyone. It is a small island with only a few great hotels. It is safe, fun and easy going. There's good food in town, too. Best snorkeling in the world. Much better than Hawaii.
Runner up is Harbour Island, Bahamas. No cars, boutique hotels and great food. And how about the pink sand? Awesome. And don't forget the Goombay Smash!

My favorite island escape is to Vieques, Puerto Rico. It is a small island off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico. Much less crowded and less developed than the Virgin Islands, but with similar beaches and beauty. It isn't unusual to have a beautiful Caribbean beach to yourself. They also have one of the brightest bio-luminescent bays in the world, excellent snorkeling, fishing, diving, and several great restaurants. What more could one ask for?

Mykonos Island, Greece. Beautiful beaches, incredible food, fun and Island shopping abound. Hands down my favorite and I have been to at least 10 islands. Still island hopping though...

Having visited many resorts on various islands over the last 30 years as the kids grew up and left just the two of us, favorite spots have been narrowed to Peter Island (BVI) for "private club" ambiance , great location, beach, food (included), nice pool, interesting guests. Equally seductive but for different reasons is Caneel Bay on St. John. Caneel is wonderful if your into tennis, meal plan is optional so one can go elsewhere from time to time (cabs are cheap) and floating on one's back (rubber mat available but not required) just off almost perfect Scott beach at high noon is sheer bliss. Caneel is more Martha's Vineyard to Peter's Nantucket.

I just returned from Grand Cayman and am absolutely in love with the island. Beautiful beaches (you can walk the whole 7 Mile beach without any obstructions), wonderful snorkeling (like swimming in a tropical fish tank), great food, no poverty and safe to be on the streets pretty much anytime.

Since I've only been to a couple of islands in my life, I would have to say Oahu (Hawaii) plus Sanibel and Captivia Islands (Florida). Oahu has gorgeous scenery, with tropical rain forests, mountains, beaches, wide open spaces (for all those pineapple fields)....and great food!(Macadamia pancakes, anyone?) From big city (Honolulu) to small town(Kailua)and many wonderful places in between, Oahu is a wonderful place! Sanibel and Captivia Islands are also wonderful for their seafood, calm beaches and, of course, wonderful shelling.

Lanai, Hawaii tops my list. I was so seduced by the island that I actually tried to convince my husband to buy a house there.

I have to agree with Carol! Vieques, Puerto Rico is amazing! The bioluminescent bay, the untouched beaches, quaint little restaurants - I've never seen anything like it. There were only two other people on the beach when we were there. If you are looking for true relaxation, try Vieques.

Dominica, the nature island is our favorite so far. Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, Dominica is in the Lesser Antilles between Guadeloupe and Martinique. The small island is home to a population of only 77,000 but has some great beaches, mountains, and forests. English is the official language and you drive on the left. If you are into beach side bars, trendy restaurants, and glitz, DO NOT GO!
If you want the least developed treasure of the Caribbean, don't mind eating local style, and love nature, this is the island for you. Outside of Rousseau, there aren't a lot of restaurants. There are snackettes everywhere and you must take advantage of their good food and island charm. A typical snackette has seating for about four people and a menu limited to what they happen to have prepared that day. Chicken, fish, and goat are the main entrees are are always served with rice and beans and usually greens. And they don't gouge the foreigners...food is cheap. Chinese restaurants are in the bigger towns but we preferred the local fare. The largest remaining population of Caribe Indians lives on Dominica and their reservation is beautiful.
Tropical flowers, rain forests, Caribbean beaches and Atlantic rocky coasts, waterfalls, gardens, most of all beautiful people. If you like nature, you will love Dominica.

#1=HAWAIIAN ISLANDS,,,Oahu,cheap and easy,with the diversity of a 3-sided island.
Maui, tho they need a longer 747 runway,,,many small jets are so inefficient !!
and Kauai, but let's not tell those tacky tourist.
Then there is Grand Cayman for the skin and scuba divers, so fantastic ,close and relatively affordable.
And lastly St. Croix is sooo much better than St. John, U.S. Virgin islands. But again, let 'them' go to St. Thomas and St. John.

OUR FAVORITE IS DEFINITELY FIJI. ANY OUTLYING ISLAND THERE. WE WERE ON MATAMANOA, BUT THEY ARE ALL GORGEOUS. SOFT SAND, GREAT SNORKELING, WARM WATER, HAPPY PEOPLE, AND NO PHONE, INTERNET, TV. HEAVENLY!

The Big Island of Hawaii is our favorite getaway. It has everything, including widely varied terrain and climate, an active volcano (a wonderful national park), Mauna Kea Observatory, lovely hidden beaches, funky little towns, and good eats for all budgets. We love the ethnic and cultural diversity. Folks are friendly and we feel welcome everywhere. Best of all, we stay with relatives, but there are many types of accommodations, including post hotels, modest B&B's, and condo rentals.
Posted By caroline granick on February 9, 2010, 9:02 AM
After being to many many Caribbean islands, there is only one that wins this prize- Virgin Gorda, BVI. Unlike any other island is the area, Virgin Gorda is not commercialized in the slightest, very laid back, quiet, and has the friendliest residents. Also unlike many other Carribbean nations, it has almost 0 crime, and is a very very clean island. In 10 years of visiting, I've never seen litter. You'll never have a bad meal- every restaurant has great food and service.
Although some accomodations can be pricey, there are several villas that can be rented as a rate cheaper than most hotels on any island. The remote-ness of the island keeps crowds away and keeps it so wonderful. The beaches are unlike any other place in the world with house sized boulders all over and the coral reefs are more alive than most other areas due to the focus on preservation. We love Virgin Gorda so much that my husband and I held our destination wedding there last October with 31 family and friends. It was perfect, just like Virgin Gorda!
Posted By Erica Kaslander on February 9, 2010, 11:35 AM
I agree with Caroline. The Big Island of Hawaii has it all. A diverse climate totaling 11 on the island at the same time, beautiful beaches on west side of the island with a rain forest on the east side, Volcano National Park, Hawaiian native culture, etc. We love the Kohala coast Hapuna Beach area. There are many condos nearby so you don't have to stay in the congested area surrounding Kona. Kealakukua for trip to Captain Hook monument, Volcano, snorkeling at City of Refuge or exploring the peak of Mauna Kea are just a short day trip away. Or you can just spend the day at Hapuna State Park boogie boarding.

Aruba. Beautiful beaches on the south side, wild breaking surf on the north. It has friendly people, great restaurants and an almost non existent crime rate. Constant mid eighty temperatures with a cooling trade wind. Snorkeling, wind surfing, parasailing and diving are just some of the activities. Casinos and a great night life, not to mention the dinner cruises and the party buses. Just a great all around vacation spot!

How can there be a favorite when there are so many and different islands? But to vote, I list St. John USVI for its beauty, Kauai for its diversity and awesomeness, and Virgin Gorda (for the boulders and its simplicity). The list to visit next will surely include Molokai, Lanai, and Hawaii, the big island.

My favorite island is St. Lucia! It's such a beautiful island!!! Oprah did say it's one of the places everyone should get the chance to visit before they die and she is so right!!! I loved it so much when on a stop on a cruise just after 9/11 that I went back there that Christmas & started the process of buying a condo on the Rodney Bay marina...one of the best things I've ever purchased & I've owned it about 7 years now...I love to get down there every chance I get...If all I want to do is relax on the beach & read a book that is all I do...but we are right in the best part of the island with so many things to choose from to do from ziplines through the rain forest to quad rides up the cliffs & down to the beach to a beautiful sunset cruise on the very ship from "Pirates of the Caribbean"...it's moored there in the marina...and we have so many great restaurants to choose from...many inexpensive & yummy local food!
I can't say enough about how so nice and friendly everyone is down there as well...never had any problems even when I go down there alone...I've never felt uneasy about being out by myself...I hope everyone gets the chance to visit this island at some point...you won't be disappointed!

I agree with Lauren! Orcas Island, Washington is the MOST peaceful place I've ever been. And I've been a lot of places. :)
From the little town to Friday Harbour and everything in between! It's perfection. Absolute perfection.

Toss-up between Martha's Vineyard and Bermuda. VERY different, but equally beautiful and relaxing in their own ways. And Bermuda packs a LOT of exotic for very little travel time from the east coast.

Anegada, in the BVI. I live on St. Thomas, I've been to the San Juans in WA state, I've been to several other Caribbean islands, I've even lived in Greece and been to a number of islands there. But Anegada, where there is nothing to do but relax and enjoy water sports - Anegada, where the roads are sand - where the flamingos roost at the salt pond - where people eat lobster for breakfast - that's the best island in the world!!!

So many islands.... so little time!
A 2 favorite Caribbean destinations: Barbados and St Lucia.
However, after seeing some of the Greek Islands, no other islands can compare. Santorini, Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes.... beauty, culture and atmosphere as well as the amazing Greek cuisine!

My vote is for Prince Edward Island, Canada (in the summertime of course). Home to red sand beaches, Anne of Green Gables, Lupins, amazing seafood, and picture-perfect pastoral scenery. Very relaxing island that you can drive to from the States. Can't say that about many other great islands!

KAUAI! Please read Elizabeth's comment - 2/8/10. I've been to many islands and lived on KAUAI. KAUAI is true paradise. Where else is so beautiful even in the rain? After it rains, the sweet, intoxicating smells of the tropical flowers come out. The Ono fish is SO GOOD! You MUST try it. I'll get Ono from a restaurant, roach coach, anywhere when I'm there because I knowt once I'm back home it will never taste like it does on KAUAI. The warm perfect weather, tropical cool breezes, and the warm, aloha-filled people are what make me return to my little grass shack every single time. But shhhhhhh, let's keep it to us Budget travelers only.

The Isle of Skye off the coast of Scotland is incredible.......complete with beautiful coastal views, single track roads through mountains, castles, sheep and cows. There are hiking trails along the coast or through the mountains with vistas that go forever or you can drive....an adventure in itself but so much fun.

St. Croix, actually Buck Island off St. Croix in USVI- beautiful clear water and sugary white sands
Isla Ixtapa(off the coast of Mexico near Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo)- spent a day there on my honeymoon and saw beautiful orange/pink sand, baby turtles, had amazing fish tacos, and rode jetskis in the Pacific

I have not gotten to go to many islands, but I love the Big Island of Hawaii. Especially if you are fortunate enough to see the lava flowing into the sea. Next is Maui. We stayed with friends who showed us where the locals snorkel and it was truly amazing.
Sanibel/Captiva used to be good, but not so much lately. On the weekend, some of the resorts/hotels let the locals use the pool and bar and it is a drunken, horrible mess. Even though I was a paying guest, I was spoken to in words that I cannot repeat because one of the non paying drunks wanted my lounge chair.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC!!!
most tourists only know the overcrowded seedy areas but DR has sooo much more to offer. there are certain beaches that are still relatively untouched. the people are so kind! the food is amazing (great fish & traditional DR dishes).
do a re-take on DR... from the coastline (fun sun relaxation) to the interior (highest peak in the caribbean & oldest university in the WESTERN hemisphere, its an amazing place to explore! :)

I noticed that someone said they preferred St. Croix over St. John's. I lived on St. Croix for a few years, 40 years ago, when the reefs and beaches were stunning but the racial strife and danger were at their peak. Can anyone who has been there recently tell me about the state of the reefs (is there still fantastic snorkeling?) and the attitude you found at hotels & restaurants?
thanks

My all-time favorite is the Treasure Beach area of Jamaica. Treasure Beach is on the gentle south coast and is considered a destination for travelers, not tourists. The scenery is beautiful; there are a wide range of accommodations; and there is certainly enough to do for the non-night-life crowd; but the best thing of all are the people--sweet, respectful, and hard-working.
Posted By Karen Kennedy on February 17, 2010, 8:31 AM
Without a doubt: Moorea! It's the epitome of a lush, tropical island. The people are absolutely wonderful and welcoming (make sure to stray away from the resorts to really experience how friendly the people of this island are!). This island truly felt more like home (as in "you've finally made it home") than any other! If I could live there, I would!
Close seconds (hard to choose):
Bora Bora (water like no other)
St. John (a little bit of everything)
Big Island of Hawaii (all that AND an active volcano)! :-)

Saw many wonderful islands I visited, as well as others planned, on the listing. But nobody mentioned the golden domestic find of The Apostle Islands, located in Lake Superior just off the coast of Duluth, MN/Superior,WI. I took the ferry to one some time ago and spent a week of the most pristine, safe nature-cavorting I ever had. There was park ranger and a campground or two on the one I chose-a part of the official National Islands Lakeshore Park, reached only once a day via the ferry that dropped me off. The water in Superior was cold, crystal clear, and a gazillion beautiful rounded sedimentary rocks paved the plant-free bottom. The island was filled with nothing but tall trees, rich undergrowth, enticing trails, and red squirrels. I ran barefoot all over without the slightest risk-no poisonous bugs, no thorns, no snakes-just paradise. I have always wanted to return with my kayak to explore adjacent refuges-one which even contains a small freshwater lake. Such Edens are more than rare in our modern world.

My favorite islands: 1. Sicily- the diversity in history, the natural beauty and the people are incredible. 2. Culebra, Puerto Rico-BEAUTIFUL beaches, is like you are in your own island and fro there ask a fisherman to take you to key Luis Pena and Culebrita, you will have the best time of your life.

I am still working on the list of islands, but Bermuda ranks way up there high. Exotic and beautiful yet so close and accessible as it is only 600 miles from the East Coast.
Sanibel/Captiva holds a special place if you are happy just to be a beach bum and seeker of shells. It's a great spot for romance as well as for a family on vacation.
The Big Island is tops in my memories of the Hawaiian Islands. So diverse, so many different things to do, but not overdeveloped like Maui.
Yet I might change all my views if I could only get to Santorini or Mykonos. At least that's what I've been told.

Phi Phi Island, Thailand. Sure its been commercialized for a while, but there's still certain parts of it that are completely isolated and make for the perfect island living. Couple that with great food, very reasonable pricing and a host of water activities, you really cant ask for more!

We loved StCroix at The Palms,it was beautiful! The owners are like your friends, and even take you snorkling on the property.Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket are both awesome, moped riding on Nantucket on a sunny cloudless day is one I won't soon forget(went in 1990).Long Island has some gorgeous beaches like Robert Moses.Once we even walked onto Fire Island,no cars! Dominican Republic,Punta Cana was a beautiful beach but my lost luggage for the entire week put a damper on the trip.
Planning a trip now, reading all the posts will help me decide where to go.

No contest. the Greek Island of Mykonos has it all. It's a place that has been the center of the known world .....for as long as there has been a known world. Romance, history, shopping, beautiful people, island madness. Welcome to the place you must return again and again. Because it's always amazing, but never the same.

My favorite island getaway would be to the Virgin Islands....St. Thomas, St.Croix and St. John are all very different but beautiful. St. John is a wonderful low-key vacation spot. If you want an island with more options that would definitely be St. Thomas. St. Croix is great because it's not as busy as St. Thomas but not as low key as St. John. The other beautiful part is that their US Territories.

El Nido, Palawan island, Philippines. The most amazing island, so pristine, with ocean waters with a clear view of a good 250 down at the corals below. Perfect, secluded, not well known. God definitely created this place special. There are all inclusive resorts on El Nido that offer a lot for a decent price. The staff is so friendly and you are not allowed to tip. The downside is the traveling that is required in order to get there, but boy, was it worth it.
