Florence. Italy, not Alabama. The afternoon and evening light is unmatched for warmth.

We nominate Vancouver for the Most Beautiful City in the World for it's skyline, the ocean, the mountains and the plethora of parks and trails in the surrounding area.

Boulder, Colorado; the trees and area in spring and fall are outstanding!

Posted By S. Johnson on February 3, 2010, 8:13 PM

I too nominate Vancouver, BC. Most people have no idea how beautiful this city is - hopefully the Olympics will change that. It's a major cosmopolitan city surrounded by mountains, water, and greenery - what more could you want in beauty. It's also very clean, compact enough to walk around, and the food (e.g., seafood, Asian) is hard to beat.

It has to be Barcelonia Spain any time of day the city is beautiful. I loved the sea as well as the hills going out of the city. Best of both worlds!

Posted By Robyn Drury on February 3, 2010, 10:15 PM

I like your Readers' Choice concept normally but there is little point in this one. The survey results I've seen award this prize to the same city year after year. Paris. It is the only city in the world where for centuries its leaders have aimed to create the most beautiful city in the world - and I should know as I studied city planning for 5 years. Next survey please.

Prague. Undoubtedly Prague is the most beautiful city in the world. Whilst other cities were destroyed during the war, Prague survived, thus its architecture is original and it hasn't been spoiled by glass and skyscrapers. It's truly the most charming and breathtaking city I have ever seen.

Posted By Eva on February 4, 2010, 10:28 AM

Florence, Italy / Firenze, Italia - either way, it's the most beautiful city on this planet.

Posted By Susan on February 4, 2010, 10:43 AM

Venice, Italy. You hear about it all your life, and then when you see it, you still can't believe it. All those gorgeous little footbridges, then the Rialto bridge, and after a lot more winding through the artistic maze you suddenly see St. Mark's cathedral. It's alsmost more than you can take in. So much beauty everywhere!

Fort Myers Beach Florida. Its a small laid back island community in sw florida. Affords the best winter weather in the country, beautiful beaches, town pier on the Gulf and sizzling sunsets. Easy going friendly locals and fresh seafoods. You can see more information of it at www.FortMyersBeachFL.org

Posted By Christian on February 4, 2010, 11:12 AM

Assisi, Italy. I've never enjoyed wandering the back lanes and alleyways of any city as much as Assisi. Lovingly cared for and maintained, this little city on the side of Mount Subasio is a beautiful place to spend a few days.

Posted By Dan Watts on February 4, 2010, 11:16 AM

Esperance, Western Australia has the most stunning coastline and offers many "wow" moments. Truly a gem down under!

Posted By Mary Baker on February 4, 2010, 11:36 AM

I've traveled in the United States and Santa Barbara, CA is a beautiful city, the trees and flowers down the main street, the beach scenery, the mountains in the backdrop. It's just a very nice place to be.

Posted By Diana Smith on February 4, 2010, 11:38 AM

Ujjain in India is the most beautiful city in the world without doubt. It is one of the most ancient city dating as far back as Alaxander the great. With temples and holy river Kshipra it can not be matched.

Posted By s sharma on February 4, 2010, 11:48 AM

My hometown of Savannah, Georgia definitely belongs on the list of the most beautiful cities in the world. Sultry Summer nights, the squares with massive Live Oaks festooned with Spanish moss, beautiful architecture, history, great food and Southern Hospitality. You can't beat it!

Posted By Georgeanne Olive on February 4, 2010, 12:00 PM

San Francisco has so many angles from which it is viewed and looks fantastic in all lights and weather. From soaring pyramids, to little cable cars climbing hills, to Victorian neighborhoods it offers unending photographic opportunities. And then the food!!! And the people!!!

Posted By Richard Ingalls on February 4, 2010, 12:23 PM

Santa Barbara? You really need to get out more. Try Paris, Vancouver, Quebec City or, for a truly small and scenic one, Hydra in Greece.

Posted By HalB on February 4, 2010, 12:29 PM

The combination of striking natural scenery, vibrant big city life and beautiful and warm people that one can find in Rio de Janeiro is hard to match.

Posted By Rodrigo on February 4, 2010, 12:34 PM

Vancouver BC is my hands down favorite and though Paris and Savannah are also beautiful cities, you have to go with the mountains in the backdrop to the beautiful city of Vancouver and that gives it the edge!

Posted By Vanessa on February 4, 2010, 12:35 PM

Easily, the most beautiful city in the world is San Sebastian, Spain. It's not on most American's radars when it comes to vacations, but it has several pristine beaches, plenty of tourist spots, and some of the best food in the world (more Michelin stars than anywhere else in the world).

Posted By Tim G on February 4, 2010, 12:35 PM

I am torn between Prague, CZ and Edam, NL. While Prague is a city steeped in history and housing many of the most beautiful buildings in the world, there is something about the quaint peacefulness of Edam...an "off the beaten path" appeal.

Posted By Amber on February 4, 2010, 12:46 PM

No doubt Prague, Czech Republic is the most beautiful city I have seen and I have travelled extensively. The old buildings are clean and well-maintained, the architecture is amazing and unlike most of Europe, it escaped virtually unscathed by WWII.

Posted By Mike Jarman on February 4, 2010, 12:46 PM

Has to be Salzburg, wedged between the river and the mountain. It is a magical city of onion domes, green hills and where people really do wear dirndles and loden. For pure beauty Salzburg is unmatched between the architecture, the natural setting and of course, the music. Or is it the wurst?

Posted By Elyse on February 4, 2010, 12:52 PM

Vancouver (BC, not Washington) -- the city is not just beautiful but world class! Vancouver has an incredible setting amidst mountains and water, plus an incredible diversity of people and things to do. If it hasn't been discovered yet, it will be during the 2010 Olympics.

Posted By Dan on February 4, 2010, 12:52 PM

Stockholm!
The combination of the exquisite architecture with so much water front is breathtakingly beautiful. Going further into the archipelago by boat is another beauty all by itself.

Posted By Debra on February 4, 2010, 12:54 PM

I concur with those who submitted Florence (Firenze). While working there, I met my husband...39 years ago. It is beyond a doubt the most exquisite city from an aesthetic and cultural point of view.

Posted By Ellen Deeb on February 4, 2010, 12:55 PM

Singapore. Flowering vines cascade from bridges and overpasses; lavish parks; no pollution or litter; beautiful waterfront.

Posted By Steve K on February 4, 2010, 1:14 PM

Capetown, South Africa -- hands down -- is the prettiest city in the world. It has everything, beautiful beaches, breathtaking views, gorgeous mountains, and is surrounded by water, culture and some very friendly people.

Posted By Dawn Onley on February 4, 2010, 1:33 PM

The towns of the Cinque Terre in Italy are breathtaking, particularly Vernazza and Corniglia.

Honfleur in Normandie!

The most beautiful city in the world is Charleston, S.C. - it has old world European charm, history abounds, the Spring color is glorious - it looks like watercolors have been splashed on all the bushes and trees, the historic district is large and accessible to visitors, the restaurants feature something for everyone - fine cuisine to the best local shrimp and oysters - the city is surrounded by water offering a multitude of views- there is always something to see and do, the beaches are beautiful
the cultural scene is thriving and diverse -the people are the friendliest in the world.

PARIS, PARIS, PARIS, FRANCE OF COURSE!!!...HAS TO BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, MOST SEDUCTIVE CITY IN THE UNIVERSE....THE BUILDINGS, THE BRIDGES, THE FOOD,THE WINE, EVERYTHING IN PARIS IS SUPER!!!

Posted By NAYDA SAURI on February 4, 2010, 1:46 PM

I have visited over 45 countries in last 30 years. It is difficult to say which city is the most beautiful one. Depending upon what one is looking for: art, culture, architecture, food, natural beauty etc. each city has to offer something unique.
Europe and North America have relatively advanced tourist facilities which make travel through any city an enjoyable experience. But if you are looking for beauty in history, ancient culture and civilizations then one has to include cities from Africa, South America and Asia like Xian, China,Cairo (Egypt), Tel Aviv (Israel), Samarkand (Uzbekistan), Mahabalipuram(India)etc, the list goes on.

Posted By Murli Iyer on February 4, 2010, 1:59 PM

Vancouver, BC has to be the worlds most beautiful city. Call me biased as I was born and raised here, but as a world traveller who has seen many beautiful places I always love coming home - there is no place like it. City, mountains and ocean all meeting each other - stunning!

Posted By Cheryl on February 4, 2010, 2:06 PM

Venice. It's truly magical. The most romantic city in the world. Where else is it a joy to get lost? The food. And no cars (Venice was "green" before there even was such a thing)!

Posted By Tesia Barone on February 4, 2010, 2:10 PM

Without a doubt my hometown of Vancouver BC. I've travelled the world a fair amount and visited many lovely places but I am always astounded at how breathtakingly gorgeuos this place is whenever I return. It's natural beauty - the mountains, the ocean and parks as well as the design of the city mae ita jewel. Watch the Winter Olypmics - it may make you a believer......

Old Town Dubrovnik, Croatia

Who says that it has to be a HUGE or major city? Part of the appeal of old town Dubrovnik is that it is compact and so historically preserved. In old town you wont see a modern building in sight, it is surrounded by the beautiful stone wall, which you can climb to see the city from all corners and the shimmering waters of the Adriatic that surround it. There is beauty in every detail from its polished stone streets, golden hue lanterns that light it up at night and the tiny walk up picturesque harbor. Dubrovnik has been through a lot in recent times and looks amazing despite it. I'm sorry but most of the suggestions on this board can't even compete. I'm sure these people just haven't had the privilege of visiting the 'pearl of the Adriatic.'

Posted By Megan Meyer on February 4, 2010, 2:49 PM

Cartagena, Colombia- the walled city is the most colorful, charming city I've ever seen. Two and three story houses built one to two hundred plus years ago in different colors of the rainbow, oranges and yellows, blues and pinks, wooden balconies draped in bougainvilleas hanging down, charming town plazas with outdoor cafes, lush vegetation everywhere, cobblestone streets and horsedrawn carriages. It's like walking into a fantasy.

Posted By Roe Gruber on February 4, 2010, 2:49 PM

Paris will always be my number 1 city. Others may take my breath away, but I don't think any other city can match Paris for feeling both so huge yet so small, as well as make you feel like both a traveler to a native from one minute to the next. The architecture, temperature, food, drinks, and art are all unparalleled in my eyes.

Posted By Michelle Torres on February 4, 2010, 2:51 PM

No one has mentioned Rio? Mountains, water, beaches, tropical plants, energy, thongs, etc. But of course, this is tempered by the favelas and crime. Good luck changing the last two before the Olympics!!

Posted By jjjrs5 on February 4, 2010, 2:51 PM

I'm very lucky to have visited over 70 countries and know that beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder! One man's Paris is another's Biloxi...but for me it's a toss-up between Sydney and Vancouver as far as beautiful cities go.

I've traveled extensively, too, and no place can compare with the beauty and scenery we have in the United States. I nominate San Diego, CA for its pristine beauty, harborside, cleanliness, historic prservation and climate. Also, the California coastal drive can match Amalfi any time.

Posted By Gloria Borden on February 4, 2010, 3:14 PM

Argentina. How can any other country compete with the stunning and dynamic scenery (Iguazu, Patagonia, the Andes & the Pampas to name a few), the quality wine, the mouth watering steaks and the most welcoming people?

Posted By Marlo on February 4, 2010, 3:23 PM

Paris. Prague a close second.

Posted By 10 Digital on February 4, 2010, 3:34 PM

Santa Fe New Mexico--The mountains, ambiance, restaurants, art galleries makes this my favorite city in the U.S.,closely followed by Savannah GA.

Posted By Terri L.Quinn on February 4, 2010, 3:38 PM

I've traveled all over the US and about 60 foreign countries. One contender not mentioned -- and probably because few people have been there -- is Cornerbrook, Newfoundland. The harbor is simply stunning, and the views from the road are magnificent.

Posted By Lois on February 4, 2010, 3:42 PM

Venice, Italy. Venice was so gorgeous, it took me well into the second before I realized I was actually there and not in a photograph or movie. I had to mindfully reach out and touch a building before it fully sank in that it was real and the I was there. Needless to say, numerous photos taken during that trip are framed throughout the house. Everyone loves them and says I need to sell them. Many have been recreated for gifts.

Posted By Jenelle on February 4, 2010, 3:43 PM

Its a three way tie: Venice, Paris, San Francisco. Each are unique and have features you can find no where else but in those cities. Each has flaws, but every time I arrive arrive in one of these town I feel revitalized!

Posted By Rob on February 4, 2010, 4:02 PM

I am a member of the Traveler's Century Club, having visited over 104 countries, and I vote for St. Petersburg, in the Russian Federation. It has the most beautiful architecture with well preserved buildings that are delightful in their pastel hues trimmed in white. The palaces and museums have no rivals in the world!!

Posted By Linda on February 4, 2010, 4:11 PM

My heart is with Paris, and I'd cheat a bit on Florence by suggesting Fiesole - where you can watch the sun set on beautiful Florence in the valley below without having to actually to negotiate its terrible traffic.

But when all is said and done, there is simply not another Venice. Spending more than a few days there can leave you feeling like a mouse in a maze, but the beauty, grandeur, uniqueness, and sense of history of the place is absolutely magical.

Posted By damont on February 4, 2010, 4:15 PM

Paris is the world's most beautiful city to me. It's not just about its physical beauty; it's also about how it makes you feel when you're strolling through one of its neighborhoods, stopping in awe of a window display of artfully arranged pastries or at a farmers' market with its kaleidoscope of produce. It's about people watching at a local cafe, all the while contentedly sipping your kir or your cafe au lait or your vin blanc. It's about daydreaming along the Seine River banks or plying the river on a bateau mouche at night, admiring the illuminated monuments like Notre Dame Cathedral or the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre Museum. It's about grabbing a crepe au Grand Marnier from a street vendor or splurging on a fine dining experience at Four Seasons George V. It's about discovering the Impressionists at the Orsay Museum or Mona Lisa at the Louvre. It's an adventure at every turn with the excitement of new discoveries every time you visit! That's what makes Paris the most beautiful city in the world.

Posted By Andrea H on February 4, 2010, 4:46 PM

Every city mentioned has merit. I think for pure visual impact, since we're talking about cities, Rio has the upper hand--the view of the city, mountains and ocean from Corcovado is unparalled in my experience. Venice and Paris are up there too!

Posted By betty on February 4, 2010, 4:56 PM

Definitely Sydney, Australia. The perfect balance of man-made (Opera House, Harbour Bridge) and natural (Sydney Harbour, the beaches) beauty. Plus the people are beautiful inside and out!

Posted By Virginia on February 4, 2010, 5:07 PM

San Francisco

Posted By LM on February 4, 2010, 5:30 PM

What a tough choice. Our favorites were Sydney, Queenstown (NZ), Victoria (BC), Heidelberg. I agree with Virginia (previous post) on Sydney, so Sydney it is. No arguments about the others mentioned--all have that special magic.

Posted By Bob on February 4, 2010, 5:31 PM

I vote for two because they are so different.

Positano Italy- This city is eye candy for humans but it is not cheap, easy to get to, nor easy to walk in as it is up the side of a mountain; therefore I also vote for-

Charleston SC- This city is eye candy for humans. It is easy to get to, easy to walk in because its flat, and it has it all-history, beaches, food.

Posted By Ed Goldberg on February 4, 2010, 5:53 PM

I've got to go with Paris, France. There are others I have visited and many I have not. Brugges in Belgium is nice too, but I will go back to Paris as often as I can. To me it will always be a city of artists, poets, and romance.

Posted By shill on February 4, 2010, 6:26 PM

I nominate Paris as the most beautiful city,It never ceases to take my breath away, but Florence is a close second.

Posted By Denise McDaniel on February 4, 2010, 6:55 PM

Hong Kong. Hills combined with the sea make it a beautiful city....especially at night.

Posted By Craigt3365 on February 4, 2010, 7:04 PM

Paris is the obvious choice, Istanbul a solid second. In the running St. Petersburg, Russia, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia in Spain, Rome, Florence, Siena, Italy, Prague; Krakow, Poland, etc. etc. My hometown San Francisco.

Posted By Joe Shea on February 4, 2010, 7:42 PM

Prague for being walkable with bridges, plazas, and alleys with lots of things to see and do.

Posted By Rod on February 4, 2010, 8:19 PM

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are so many visually beautiful cities in the world. And everyone has their own personal favorites. But true beauty is not just about how it looks but also how it makes you feel. For me, I would say Venice takes the prize. It is a surreal feeling to be there. It is so unique and surprising. Serendipity awaits you around every corner. I'll never forget the feeling of awe that came over me as the maze of narrow passageways I had been exploring suddenly and unexpectedly opened up into the great expanse of St. Mark's Square. Another beautiful city is San Diego. The incredible climate, the coastline, the hills and canyons, the amazing variety of flowers and plants that flourish there...it makes you feel like you've discovered paradise. I lived there for several years and every time I would return home after visiting some wonderful place (including Venice), I would always look down from the descending plane, smile and think, "I live in the best place in the world."

The best mustard based barbeque is in a small city about 38 miles northwest of Orlando, Florida. It's Kings Taste Barbeque in Eustis, Florida. Some African-American gentlemen run it and anyone in town can direct you. They specialize in chicken and pork ribs.

Posted By Jim Fisher on February 4, 2010, 8:40 PM

Impossible for me to pick one, so will give you my top three: Edinburgh, Sydney, San Francisco. Each has a unique look and character and a fascinating history, and all are small enough to be relatively easy to explore.

Posted By Marion on February 4, 2010, 8:54 PM

Prague. Prague is what Paris thinks it is. Great setting, impressive buildings, and streets you never tire of walking.

Posted By keith baker on February 4, 2010, 9:33 PM

This may sound unbelievable, but Pittsburgh, PA is absolutely beautiful. Driving from the airport, through the Fort Pitt Tunnel, the city just appears. It is a "WOW" moment.

Posted By Kathleen on February 4, 2010, 9:45 PM

We've visited many of the other favorites, but after visiting Prague this past summer, my husband and I felt that it was the most beautiful city that we had ever seen.

Posted By Cindy on February 4, 2010, 10:11 PM

According to me the worlds city is VIZAK(INDIA), its very cool n loving nature.

Posted By lakshmoji chowdary on February 4, 2010, 11:10 PM

Paris steals your soul and should be seen with someone you love.....nothing matches it's magic. Barcelona is a close second and Stockholm is a great 3rd!

Posted By Kathy L on February 5, 2010, 2:18 AM

Eger, Hungary. It's the perfect not too big, not too small size; offers the turn-of-the-century architecture Americans adore in other cities but without the prostitutes, beggars and pick-pockets of larger more cosmopolitan Europe. Plus there is a neighborhood called the "wine valley" with cheap but delicious red wine to sample in cave-like cellars and a historic bathing complex offering a range of warm waters—both of which help any city look a little more lovely when you’re caught in the rain.

Posted By Nicole on February 5, 2010, 5:33 AM

In the U.S. it's Charleston, South Carolina. Walking past the houses, the cobble-stoned streets, the palmetto trees, there is such a feeling of timelessness. Gorgeous! And in the world, it's Paris, France. When the sun rises on that city, a glow emanates which takes your breath away.

Posted By Jennifer Morris on February 5, 2010, 6:09 AM

Monte Carlo, Nice or Eze in the Cote D'Azur - take your pick. Just heaven on earth in terms of beauty with warm breezes, sunny days. Watching the yachts anchored in the harbor, strolling the gardens or just walking the stone paths nearby with breathtaking views. Ceremonial changing of the guards at the Palace, people-watching near the Casino, Monaco grand prix -- take your pick of activities to interest.

Posted By VB on February 5, 2010, 7:33 AM

Isn't this like asking which of your children you love the most? Well, if you must - VENICE. Mysterious, beguiling, incandescent. If you've been there you simply know this is the truest answer. Sharing second place, Paris, Florence, and Varenna (town of 800 on Lake Como)- one dives right into these delicious places eating them up like chocolate truffles. But Venice consumes you. She defines the word unique. You drift through her like a dream then ask yourself if it was real. If you've really been there in Serenissima, the Pearl of the Adriatic. Oh, yes, Venice.

Posted By Susan Connell on February 5, 2010, 8:54 AM

I SAY PARIS.READ ANDREAS STATEMENT.THAT COVERS THE SUBJECT VERY WELL

Posted By W.THOMPSON on February 5, 2010, 9:35 AM

Oia, Santorini - possibly one of the most photographed cities in the world. Its beauty is breathtaking. One of a kind.

Another contender is Venice, Italy. Other postings have already affirmed her beauty and charm.

Posted By Kerri on February 5, 2010, 10:50 AM

Xalapa, the capital of Veracruz State, in Mexico is the most beautiful city I have visited. The mountain air & views are excellent. The people are fascinating to meet & observe. There are many beautiful parks & museums, nightlife, shopping, etc.

I will never lie to you people, I was once told that Rio is the most beutifull city, went there and never saw anything that spectecular about that place. I believe that some of the cities above mentioned here are only beutifull on Tv, well let me tell you something people I've been 2 places and I have never seen anything as beutifull as CAPE TOWN, in my whole life, CAPE TOWN and my girlfriend are Twins 2me, and God im so proud 2be South African right now and you guys are welcome to my country for the world Cup 2010 event n i say go see the mother of all cities CAPE TOWN with ur own eyes remove spectacles if u using them coz u wont need them but see it with ur own meat's eyes. I agree with many of the comments so far. Paris is majestic, Venice is romantic, Sydney is wonderful but.....I have to say my hometown of Vancouver BC is spectacular in beauty and nature. It is very cosmopolitan, cultural, and diverse. I love to travel but I love to come home and enjoy the beauty that is in my own back yard. Come to visit and enjoy!

Posted By Robert on February 5, 2010, 12:08 PM

Berlin, Germany, definitely. It is so alive and vibrant, day and night. Friendly people, great food, wonderful museums, beautiful parks, historic sites, great transportation system, and something for everyone. In addition to being beautiful, it is also very affordable.

Posted By Daryl on February 5, 2010, 3:18 PM

Carmel, California hands down. Not a city, but the most beautiful town surrounding by nature's best for miles. 2nd choice is my nearby hometown, Charleston, SC. I still marvel even 40 years since I took my first history tour as a kid. Will probably retire there. For cities, San Francisco is #1. Rome Italy is a close 2nd.

Posted By KLK on February 5, 2010, 4:03 PM

I agree with others that to name one single city is impossible. For big cities, there is no contest: It is Paris. From its grand boulevards to its back alleys, no other city stirs the soul on so many levels.

For medium size cities, it has to be Venice. There is no more unique city on earth. The magnificent architecture is the icing on the cake to the unique canals.

One thing you see when you travel all over the world, as I have, is that so many cities call themselves "The Paris of..." or "The Venice of..." Of course, those other cities, no matter how charming, always pale in comparison to the real things.

For smaller cities, I would have to say either Dubrovnik or Positano. The former is the perfect medieval walled city perched on the turquoise Adriatic, the latter a vertical wonder that sits like a painting between the precipitous mountains and the wine-dark Mediterranean.

Posted By Tim C from NJ, formerly from NYC on February 5, 2010, 5:03 PM

Surely Hong Kong. Singapore or Kuala Lumpur is definitely no match since Hong Kong has lots of country parks, an excellent airport and transport system and best of all, cheap!

Posted By Samuel on February 6, 2010, 5:00 AM

I agree with many others...there is beauty everywhere! Based on our travels, here are our top three. We loved the crested skyline of sea, people, birds, tall buildings and mountains in 1) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We really enjoyed the feeling of 2) Amsterdam....the canals, bike riders, cathedrals and squares all condensed in one area felt like a compact explosion of beautiful details that we didn't take for granted and that didn't get lost as they did at times in Paris. Not a bustling city, but we also love the way the cityscape feels as if it has long been built into the the tall majestic mountains in 3) Aspen, Colorado.

Posted By javi on February 6, 2010, 8:34 AM

Nothing like Amsterdam in the spring. Forget Paris, London, Rome. This is a city that is cosmopolitan like no other (even above NYC) and best of all, you can walk everywhere.

Posted By hut2s on February 6, 2010, 8:22 PM

New Orleans has to earn a nomination, especially after last night. French Quarter, Garden District,Mississippi river, and resilient people who know hot to celebrate.

Posted By Michael on February 8, 2010, 11:10 AM

Boy, Vancouver is getting a lot of love. It is a beautiful city but I would rank Stockholm a notch above simply because it is older.

Posted By alsek on February 8, 2010, 11:11 AM

I am shocked Vienna hasn't made the list. Even the buildings that were destroyed during the war were rebuilt to match the original building. And the culture! There is so much to do (and eat) that I never tire of the place. Wish I could live there!

Posted By Sue on February 8, 2010, 11:12 AM

CAPETOWN SOUTH AFRICA

Ok, it has a lot of crime, but once you get past that, cape town is unbelievable. Breathtaking vista, great ocean. Unbelievable things to do and see. The surrounding country is full of vineyards and spectacular coastal views. Rich with history. A true must see.

Sydney is absolutely stunning. From the harbour to the beaches to the beautiful gardens and parks, this place is gorgeous.

I have been blessed to have visited many of the previously mentioned cities. Although hardly a city, Wengen, Switzerland has to be the most beautiful town in the world!!

Tough not to include Victoria, B.C. in any such listing of beautiful cities. I'd put it near the top!

We have seen so many beautiful cities with so much to offer. But recently seen Washington DC. Only for 3 days needed almost 3 weeks.Easy to get around, beautiful parks, pristine, clean and amazing historic preservation a steping stone to show off a beautiful country. So our vote would be Washington DC.

WELL... I guess he was writing about the wonderful RIO DE JANEIRO !!!!!!! ok, there are problems (been solving, bet on that!) but the green mountains, astonishing beaches, sun, sand, lagoon e we, the people... well, there's nothing like that! RIO!!!

Prague, Czech Republic. With the gorgeous architecture it reminds me of a magical music box.

Give me the Isle of Capri as one of the most magical places to enjoy a vacation worth remembering. Positano is special as well, especially when staying at Le Sirenuse.

Though I am hardly considered worthy to respond to a question as largely difficult to answer as THE most beautiful city in the world, as I have only seen a fraction of this entirely overwhelmingly beautiful world, (plus, as Jim states above, beauty is in the eye of the beholder), I can say that what I've seen thus far, Sevilla, Spain is my most beautiful city.

It's the city I dream about and most long for: the warm breeze blowing through the palm trees lining ancient streets with Moorish architecture mixed in between very European (and narrow) streets. It's the sound of Flamenco coming out of bars and randomly erupting on streets after midnight and the old-world, old-Spanish feel that reverberates off of everything. It's so romantic.

There are so many great cities that have already been mentioned (Santa Barbara! Siena! San Sebastian!), but Kyoto beats them all. Like Krakow, it was spared in WWII. It was the capital of Japan for about six centuries, so there are many beautiful temples, shrines, and palaces. Bonus: cherry blossoms, although they only bloom a few weeks out of the year. Kyoto is stunning with or without them.

Cape Town is stunning. You can drive a short distance and see the Cape of Good Hope and then stop and see penguins on the sand. While you are in Cape Town, walk around the V&A Waterfront complex where you can people watch, bird watch, eat, hear free music, see ships from all over the world and shop. A day at the beautiful National gardens is a treat.

One day you can go surfing at one of the beautiful beaches. A trip to the top of Table Mountain is a must, as well. Always, as you wonder around the city look up in the hills and you will see a giraffe or zebra. It is just stunning.

I agree that Vancouver is a lovely city, but top of my list has to be Rome, Venice, London, Prague, Salzburg, Cape Town, San Francisco and Paris. Just reading this article makes me want to pack my bags and go out and explore even more of the cities mentioned that I have not been to.

Posted By Sue on February 8, 2010, 4:02 PM

PRAGUE. No question about it! I first visited 10 years ago and I fell completely and utterly in love. Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, strolling along the Vltava, all of the parks (especially the ones along and on the river), taking the Ujezd to the top of the city...I could go on forever. I was lucky enough to live there for about 6 months in 2006, and it was the most magical time of my life. Every day I felt as if I was walking through the pictures of a wonderful fairy tale. This city could melt even the coldest of hearts.

I have the same sense with the other comment about Vancouver, BC. A city with views of skyline, mountains, and ocean all meeting each other - stunning! I was fortunated to ski at Whistler also. I was born in Asia, have been living in Washington DC metro, and travel some in US, Europe, and Caribbeans.

Venice, Italy. It is as unspoiled and medieval/renaissance as any city I have ever seen. You just get lost in the streets (literally) and around each corner or piazza is a new delight. You are transported back to another place and time."See Venice and die" is as true now as it ever was!

You must see Dubai in the United Arab Emerites. Architecturally, there is no place in the world that is more impressive. Of course, when money is no object, it's bound to be spectacular. Once you see it, you would have to agree that it is the most beautiful city in the world.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It has it all - mountains, forests, lake and of course amazing beaches. The city is beautiful from all angles you look at. Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, the Sugar Loaf, the Corcovado Mountain, Lake Rodrigues de Freitas and amazing historic buildings.

I consider Interlaken, Switzerland heaven on earth. Beautiful mountains and lakes surround the area. Auckland/Devonport, New Zealand comes in a close second.

Posted By Mario on February 8, 2010, 8:40 PM

My vote goes to Rio de Janeiro. Yes, there is crime, and some places are dirty, but the setting with the ocean, beaches and green hills definitely make it gorgeous. My number 2 vote goes to my home city of Anchorage, Alaska, on clear days in the summer or winter. Surrounded by ocean on two sides and the Chugach Mountains right behind it, wow!

Posted By Maria Bjorn-Roli on February 9, 2010, 12:03 AM

The towns of Cinque Terre on the Italian Rivera are spectacular, especially Vernazza when approached along the trail by the sea from the north. The view of the tiny city and its harbor is awesome. Positano comes in as a close second for me. I see pictures of it now and think "I was there!"

The the city that most visually takes my breath away is the world's bridge between East and West: Istanbul. The view of the European side from the shore-line park high above on the Asian side of the Bosporus is stunning. The exotic peoples, colors, markets and mosaics, together with layers of gorgeous architecture and sparkling, bustling waterways make Istanbul a sumptuous feast for all of the senses, as well as the most exquisite photo opportunity I've ever encountered.

Leh, Ladakh, India - if you're looking for something surreal. The drive from Leh to Srinigar will take your breath away!

For me, it's Old Town Dubrovnik.

The old town is very well preserved and has a beautiful medieval feel. It's like being in a fairy tale. Throw in the Adriatic sea and the mountains...the city simply takes your breath away.

Well I agree Venice and Prague are breathtaking citie, not to mention Cesky Krumlov, Brugges and all the other small European old towns. But I have to agree Vancouver BC is the most beautiful city. Its not often you find a city that has something for everyone: the person who loves to soak up sun on the beach, the adventurous outdoorsy type and the one who loves to sample great wine paired with delicious international cuisine.

Florence, Italy!! One of my all time favorite travel photos was taken from the top of our hotel (of my husband and me) with the Duomo in the back ground. It is such a magical city.

Paris comes in second. You can't be disappointed anywhere in Paris. Besides, we speak french, so we naturally would say Paris.

Posted By jessica on February 11, 2010, 11:42 AM

I've traveled extensively and so many places are beautiful, but so many places do not live up to the hype or what you think that you are going to experience once you are there. Venice and Paris were both like that for me. They are GORGEOUS, but they aren't a fairy tale- there are down sides to them as well (ie: cab drivers who scream at you b/c you aren't going a far enough distance for them... or being caught on a boat in Venice in a FREEZING, pouring rain). Iconic, yes, beautiful, yes, but they do not compare to crossing the Charles Bridge during sunset, and walking into the Old Towne Square of PRAGUE when it is bathed in golden light. It IS the Golden City. I would return here over and over and over.

Posted By Su on February 11, 2010, 12:39 PM

I would have to agree with those who claim Prague to be the most beautiful city in the world, but I would have Brussels tagging alongside. However, when one speaks of a spectacular city we are generally referring to the old centrum. All big cities seem to have been blighted by graffiti, a deplorable trend screaming for a solution. We love the classic sections of Paris, Vienna, Rome, Venice, Budapest, Old Rhodes Town, Lisbon, ancient Athens, Amsterdam, Oia on the Greek island of Santorini, the whole of the Italian Riviera's Cinque Terra, and so many others ... but Prague and Brussels stand apart when it comes to the sheer beauty of old centrums.

Posted By Deleano on February 11, 2010, 12:47 PM

So many beautiful places, so little time on this earth. I have been to 6 of the 7 continents, and every place is special (Paris, Rio & Positano) stand out in my mind).

But I think the most beautiful is Dubrovnik, Croatia. The city walls, the marble streets, the steep cliffs of the surrounding shoreline come together in a magical vision.

Posted By Julie Kolehmainen on February 11, 2010, 1:22 PM

The 5 towns of the Cinque Terre linked by the via del Amore. Walk the 17 miles from town to town for a breathtaking (no pun intended) experience.

Posted By Shelley Dahl on February 11, 2010, 1:40 PM

To pick the most beautiful city is difficult as cities vary in size, visual accessibility, surrounding landscape etc. Paris, for me, is the most beautiful large cosmopolitan city. Monaco is great for a reasonably large seaside city and any of the towns of the Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast for smaller seaside towns. Esfahan, Iran is unique, especially when the late afternoon sunlight dapples the Naghsh-I Jahan Square which rivals any square in Europe.

Posted By Lamont Pittman on February 11, 2010, 1:57 PM

My knee-jerk response was the same as LV: the towns of Cinque Terre, but I wouldn't classify them as "cities." If we're talking "city" here, I get zero points for originality, but I left my heart in Paris years ago and, despite Florence's romance and San Francisco's views, Paris, je t'aime.

Posted By Martrese White on February 11, 2010, 2:06 PM

Cape Town South Africa--so beautiful--so much variety. Table Mountain, the gardens, the ocean and even more beauty just short drives in any direction. We were there in 2005 and it still is our best trip ever.

Posted By Marie on February 11, 2010, 2:24 PM

Florence or Paris....if you're talking about a CITY. Both of these cities have been BUILT with dedication to the arts and architecture by extremely skilled architects, painters, and sculpters and have been preserved/restored quite well. You can't walk down any street in Florence and not find an object of beauty whether it's a fresco, or a door. And in Paris, L'art Nouveau movement contributed to the beautiful Metro entryways and homes throughout.

Posted By SLS on February 11, 2010, 2:24 PM

This is an extremely relative question as everyone's idea of beauty is different.

For myself, it is Oia on the island of Santorini. Postcard picture perfect and truly one of a kind. Venice is charming but Oia resonates true poetic beauty.

Posted By JR on February 11, 2010, 3:02 PM

If one drives from the east into Vancouver the passing nature of mountains and valleys, waterfalls and wildlife beautifully frame the day that ends in picturesque Vancouver. Many european cities are quaint but Vancouver, BC is by far the most beautiful.

Posted By Walter Schmidt on February 11, 2010, 3:29 PM

I would submit for your consideration the Art Deco district of Miami Beach. The wide use of window eyebrows and various other Art Deco elements allows South Beach to have the world's greatest concentration of buildings in this style. For icing on the cake these features which originally received a monochromatic color treatment are now tastefully enhanced by the judicious use of various pastels that highlight these unique architectural features. It's amazing that the majority od this district escaped the wholesale use of the wrecking ball unlike Atlantic City whose magnificent seaside castles of elegance, grace and charm are being scrapped for an assortment of mirrored monoliths.

Posted By Duane Koda on February 11, 2010, 5:00 PM

Prague and Venice, too, are our votes. While Paris is, indeed, a special city and has so many riches is almost an embarrassment, Prague and Venice share a magic not to be found anywhere on Earth. In addition to the beauty of the architecture, plethora of cultural offerings, history and pride there is another element setting these two cities apart. Their people.

Without having an abundance of cyber-tomatoes heaved in this direction, we would also like to nominate Washington, DC. Really, this city has reinvented itself. The Museums, the art/theatre/music in abundance, the burgeoning restaurant scene, the Monuments and government buildings, the history and the surrounding areas all connive to burn a place in your heart. We are won (although, you did not have us at hello). And, not coincidentally, it was designed by Pierre L'Enfant...

Posted By Lisa Gill on February 11, 2010, 5:29 PM

It was a tough call between Venice and Paris (I've been to both cities several times) but I'm going to have to go with Venice since it is the most unique city in the world. I never get tired of visiting either city.

As a former Venezuelan diplomat, I had the good fortune of having lived in Stockholm for several years, been working in Vancouver for several weeks, studied in Paris and London, and visited hundreds of cities because of my work: from Cairo, Buenos Aires, to Beijing, Rio, Santiago,Bogota, and Rome. My conclusion: There is nothing like Paris. Probably Vancouver, and then Stockholm. In that order. Paris is not only the "grand dame" of cities, is also a state of mind.See Paris and then die!

Edinburgh is the most beautiful city I have ever been to. London, NY, Paris, and Rome are cool, and pretty. But Edinburgh, so far, tops my list. I'm going to Prague in a month, so maybe that will change. We'll see. Haven't been to Florence, Barcelona, or Venice yet. I used to live a half hour from Savannah.

The town of Fira on the island of Santorini, Greece is easily the most beautiful place in the world. Perched on the edge of a cliff and facing west on the Aegean Sea, the whitewashed buildings with blue roofs and pastel highlights spill down to the distant sea below. The picture changes every hour as shadows created by the sun's movement redefine the the landscaped hues of blue.
Cruise ships below appear to be no bigger than a wine cork. Ride a donkey from the dock to the crest of Fira above. Then, as the sun sets across the Caldera, stop, relax, open a bottle of wine and and marvel at the scene before you as classical music resonates through the town.

My vote would definitely be for Montreal.

It is a perfect blend of European and North American sensibilities, with four distinct seasons to provide the local and the traveler with shifting experiences.

But ultimately the best feature, for me, is the people. The French flair gives a certain passion (joie de vivre) to the local culture, while the multicultural immigrant history provide a delicious style to both food and locals.

Montreal is the cool kid on the playground.

Christchurch, NZ is quite possibly one of the prettiest cities I have ever visited. In the spring and summer the colors of the flowers in the parks and along the city streets are amazing. The mixed architecture of the downtown and suburban areas keep everything feeling cozy and manageable, and the people are some of the friendliest anywhere!

It's still hard to beat Paris - even after 6 trips, we marvel at the beauty in the details of every street corner, every building. You still find fresh flowers on cafe tables, beautiful linens on tables and beds. While we like the ambience and friendliness of other European cities like Brugges, Rome, Florence, Seville,Lisbon, to name a few, Paris has an elegance and slightly faded beauty that is incomparable.

Bogota, Colombia is an amazing city. World Culture Capital of the New Millennium. the world's largest international theatre festival will launch ath the end of March; with over 2,500,000 attendees expected.

Bogota is replete with history in La Candelaria, Usaquen and La Merced, stunning modern architecture in the Financial District and soon-to-be revamped downtown, flowers in bloom year-round (pinky-orange roses and fuscia bougenvillia are incredible), incredible churches, synagogues and temples, and over 1,000 parks - including Parque Simon Bolivar which is 3x NYs Central Park! And the people are not only stunningly beautiful on the outside, but also inside.

Most every restaurant is impeccably decorated with care and an eye for design. The clubs are stunning and the theaters go from the classic Teatro Colon to the modern Teatro Libre.

Bogota is a world-class city that can be visited on a budget.

I determine the quality of a city by its past, present and future. Among places I have been to, there is one city that shines in all three: Istanbul.

Walking through the city you almost feel if there were one man or woman who would unite the world, he or she would come from this city. It is so magical and so real at the same time.

The word "breathtaking" was created to describe Rio de Janeiro. The setting of awesome sculpted mountains piercing through the city at various points, grand sweeping beaches, with those same mountains providing an amazing backdrop, its giant bay, mountain-ringed lagoon right in the middle of the city, parks and wild and magestic flora ornamenting the Portuguese-designed sidewalks and either colonial or gleaming contemporary architecture, this is a city to treasure, the most beautiful city in the world hands down!

Posted By nikki on May 30, 2010, 11:45 PM

Cape Town is the most beautiful city on earth! By far I think.

Cape Town is such a spectacular city, with a quality of life I have simply never seen anywhere else. I have heard it described as 'A Scandinavian City with a Meditteranean Climate'. Well (a) I never knew a city as clean or efficient in Scandinavia, though I love both Stockholm and Oslo and (b) Cape Town clearly has better weather than anywhere I know in the Mediterranean. The comment is in many ways fair, but it doesn't quite hit the full wonderful mark!

As for crime, NOT bad at all. In South Africa Johannesburg has high crime, but Cape Town really does not. It's better than anywhere I've lived in Europe or the USA. Of course be sensible in where you choose to go, and be careful of pickpockets in tourist traps, but that applies far more in Paris (another of my favourites for beauty) than in Cape Town.

The city is beautiful not only for its superlative nature, which I think exceeds all other cities- even Rio - by far, but also for its fine and complex architecture across the centuries. Seventeenth century Dutch homesteads, Eighteenth century Malay districts and mosques, beautiful typical British colonial buildings from both the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries (including a town hall made out of yellow stone from Bath!) and a beautiful collection of gorgeous 21st century buildings. The natural and man made beauty is ubiquitous. Cape Town is a world treasure and a true non-pareil.

My personal top 20 in order:

(1) CAPE TOWN!
(join 2/3/4. I cannot decide on a final order between these 3 gems! Depends on priorities:)
Rome (ancient history) /
Rio (nature) /
Paris (history and modern beauty)
(5) Istanbul
(6) Sydney
(7) Vancouver
(8) Hobart
(9) Stockholm
(10) Hong Kong
(11) St Petersburg
(12) Barcelona
(13) Buenos Aires
(14) Singapore
(15) Kulala Lumpur
(16) Melbourne
(17) Oslo
(18) Copenhagen
(19) Pretoria (when the Jacarandas are in bloom)
(20) Zurich

No offence to London, where I have lived for some years, but calling it beautiful seems warped. The architecture is far too unsuccessfully eclectic, the Thames is filthy, and the city itself permanently covered in dirt from industry and the subway. I really don't think you can call it beautiful. Interesting certainly, but clearly not beautiful. By that score New York should be on the list (though I far prefer NY to London) - but fortunately it is not either. That would also be false reasoning I think. There may be two square miles of beautiful in the very heart of zone one, but that doesn't redeem even the rest of zone one, much less one thousand square miles of suburban awful in zones two through nine.

Of smaller towns (which I don't think you can call cities) I would go with Florence / Venice / Assisi / Knysna / George / Oxford / Cambridge / Bath etc.

But after that virtual blog, CAPE TOWN! All the way! Most beautiful city in the world.

No one city should have as much as San Francisco offers. It will take your breath away.

Oia, Santorini for its breathtaking natural beauty by far the most enchanting
Paris for its glamour and elegance
and Venice for its intriguing romance

San Francisco is the most beautiful city in the world. It has been built on several hills, so it has breathtaking views from every angle. Of course, it has the most famous landmarks in the world: Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, Cable Cars, Coit tower, Beautiful high-rises, Victorian houses, etc.

I've never been to Europe (i dream of it), but out of the cities in America I've been to, Chicago, Washington DC, Harpers Ferry, WV, and Richmond, VA are the most beautiful for different things. Chicago is beautiful because it feels like a city on the edge of nowhere because of the lake, like it's by the sea. The Chicago skyline at night is also very beautiful. DC is beautiful for it's huge monuments and wide roads, as well as the nice local culture. The crime isn't so bad as long as you stay in the Government district and Georgetown. Harpers ferry is beautiful because of the way it is perched on cliffs and hills by the river. It is just majestic. And finally, Richmond is beautiful for its charm and rolling hills, as well as its tree-lined streets.

JERUSALEM capital of Palestine is the most beautiful city in the world. The old city of Jerusalem represent the beauty itself.

I have been in 66 countries and lived in several. Prague (Czech Republic) is the most beautiful I have seen. And my native San Francisco (California, USA) ties with Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) as second most beautiful.

It depends what you are looking for in a city, but if we go by the definition of a city, Paris, without a doubt and by a very big margin.

Istanbul, take on a ferry in the bosporus, and let istanbul take away your breath, you are in the middle between europe and asia. when i first saw bosporus from the rumeli hisar i was shocked with the beauty.

My favourite is Pittsburgh, PA. I adore the 3 rivers and fantastic hills to walk. Prague (Praha) and St Petersburg tie for 2nd. All the cities have charm, great rivers, good food, arts, fun walks and extremely friendly and welcoming people.

Vancouver, BC! It is where the sea meets the mountains and the sky. On top of that you have a highly diverse, cosmopolitan city center surrounded by ocean, parks, and beaches.

City of Bath, England or Pargue, Czech Republic

Rio de Janeiro, Antigua (Guatemala) & Cartagena (Colombia).

If you take into account the whole city and not just the 'pretty' bit, the undoubted winner is Stockholm. Cities like San Francisco, Paris, Rome, Sydney have lots of ugly, boring parts.

I'm from NY. But Paris is The most beautiful City of them all. Barcelona and London are nice too. San Francisco and Vancouver tops The American continent.

But for smaller cities it has to be San Sebastian. This little jewel packs a reduced Parisian flavor, a beautifull coast, right in The border between Spain and France. Surrounded by evergreen mountains, two amazing beaches and probably The best concentración of Michelin stars restaurants. You eat amazingly at every corner. And is one of the worlds best surfing cities. Modern public transportación and bike lanes all over The City. No wonder it was The vacation place for The Spanish Monarchy. French elegance mix with Spanish character. Beatiful mix of blondes and brunettes too.

I have been to most European and Northern American cities. f the famous ones outside of these continents, I have not been to Rio, Sydney, Cape Town, Hongkong or Bangkok. I prefer older cities to newer ones. I am not very fond of skyscrapers, so I tend to go with the old cities in Europe. My number one is Prague, then Barcelona, Stockholm, Vienna, Florence, Rome, Munich, San Sebastian, Paris and Lisbon. I also liked Istanbul and Isfahan, but would not call them super pretty, only in parts. San Francisco, where i currently live, is nice but does not have the romantic feel of Europe. Vancouver is way overrated, what is there to see??? Yes, scenery is beautiful, but the city buildings are either unspectacular or even ugly. Best small cities I have been to: Dubrovnik, Vernazza, Brugge, Eze, Positano, Heidelberg, Rothenburg, Lucca

I have lived in or visited almost a hundred cities, but rank the top ten as follows:
1. Vancouver, BC
2. San Francisco
3. Venice
4. Paris
5. Seattle
6. Heidelberg, Germany
7. Honolulu, Hawaii
8. Cambridge and Oxford, UK
9. Stockholm
10. Amsterdam
I hesitate to include cities like London, Rome, etc. in top ten but would love to visit Sydney, Rio, Cape Town, Salzburg, Prague, Guilin (China) etc later.

Cape Town is the most beautiful city on earth, by miles. The architecture is gorgeous with whole districts perfectly preserved from centuries ago, modern buildings that are immaculate and beautiful and old vineyards and homesteads straight from a dream. Magnificent.

And that isn't even counting the amazing beaches. 100 miles of blazing white sand, turquoise waters, sapphire depths and ranging from cold water on the west to temperate on the east. Don't judge the water temperature by Clifton! Beautiful though it is. I've swum in 10 degree water there, and gone across the peninsula to 22 degree water in False Bay. Wonderful.

And of course then you have the mountains. Rising exultantly from the sea. Nowhere else in the world combines sea and mountain in such a way. Not even Norway, Big Sur or Amalfi. It's incredible, and literally gives me shivers. Amazing. Cape Town, by FAR. Most beautiful city in the world.

Runners up? Paris, Rio, Rome, Istanbul, Stockholm, Sydney, Buenos Aires, Prague, Hong Kong, Hobart, Edinburgh.

I have travelled all around the world and I've been in a lot of beautiful cities, but there's one city above all the others. Barcelona. I totally fell in love with that city. The architecture is totally unbelievable, specially Gaudi's works. Nothing like the Sagrada Familia, Guell Park and the Casa Mila. And Las Ramblas is probably one of the most beautiful streets in the world, full of colour and music. It's a magical city. And the weather is fantastic. And the views of the city from the top of the Tibidabo are just breathtaking.

For me lisbon, Portugal is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, not just because I live here since ever, but because when I go out I'm still amazed at the city.
The tourists, the locals, the tradition as well as the weather and even the light that this city gets its amazing and unique.
And its a safe city, not because you have a lot of police but because you feel safe, everyone gets along and will help a tourist who needs help.
And lisbon is not just the city, Lisbon has a big diversity, in one minute you can go see the city and in the next you can go to the beach or the mountains to nature reserve.

i would go with the old european cities...

Paris,Vienna(small Paris), Florence, Roma, Venice, Budapest, Prague....

The beauty of a city doesn't have to be about architecture. It's about its heartbeat, the pulsating rhythms of the afternoon as cyclists navigate perilous traffic, the yellowish light cast on their foreheads. Calcutta, Nairobi perhaps?
