More than 70 of you wrote comments—mostly in support of—my recent blog post opposing a New York state bill that would make short-term sublets illegal. The story was picked up by USA Today, Drudge Report, The New York Times, The Village Voice, London's Guardian, Virginia Postrel, and Gothamist.
Well, Governor David Paterson has to make up his mind within the next 24 hours or so.
Interestingly, Stephen Kaufer, the CEO & Founder of TripAdvisor, has pleaded with the governor to veto the bill. Arthur Frommer, who needs no introduction, also hoped the governor would veto. Yesterday, more than 500 protesters gathered outside of City Hall, mainly bed and breakfast owners and private homeowners. They dramatically outnumbered the roughly 50 supporters of the bill, mostly hotel owners, who were there as well.

"New York State co-op and condo owners and boards lost some of their autonomy Friday (July 23) when Governor David Patterson signed legislation banning temporary vacation sublets from rental apartments but also, in a broadly sweeping reach, from co-op and condominium apartments — while allowing brownstone owners and house owners to retain their full property-ownership rights. I have the same problem in New Orleans. Orleans parish makes it impossible for homowners to sublet, and then the HOA writes impossible rules for property that I am paying for. It makes me furious, and I think it is illegal to tell someone what they can and cannot do with the inside living area of their home.

Hi Iolaire,
You're right. The bill has been
signed into law
Thanks for the info!

I can understand how NY State can insist that apartment or co op or condo owner must submit evidence that the people staying for short periods of time are well screened...but I cannot understand how they can pass a law prohibiting people from sharing their property in a responsible way while allowing owners of town houses to precede freely...when safety is a factor.

Why would any city want to have their visitors have less money available as a tourist. By renting a private room, apartment or home, we have a larger budget for the things we visit any city to see. More for theater tickets, concerts, shoping, tours, and restaurants. When we stay in a big city hotel we often bring in some groceries from home or a local deli just to cut expenses.
We have stayed in private homes in NYC, Paris, Rome, Lake Como, Florence, plus many hostels in Europe.
Does the expression 'cuting off your nose to spite your face' seem appropriate?

I'd be interested in a follow up in 6 months or after the holidays at least to see how this has affected tourism/spending in the city through the holidays. Will visitors be making shorter stays? Will they be spending less around town when they do visit?
