Extra mile awards, the bonus round: Another motel to watch

We just unveiled our sixth-annual Extra Mile Awards—in which we salute the forward-thinking companies and people working to make your vacation simpler, more affordable, and way more fun. One of the trends we spotlight is how Motel 6, Red Roof Inn, and Holiday Inn have taken the concept of the traditional roadside motel and flipped it on its head, each initiating a massive design overhaul and totally redefining what it means to stay somewhere on a budget.

While it hasn't yet reached the sheer numbers of those three chains, Super 8 has also launched a room redesign that's just getting off its feet.

A relative newcomer to the remodel game, Super 8 has completely revamped two properties so far (in Mount Laurel, N.J. and Pennsville, N.J.), with plans to have 13 more renovations finished by early next year. Highlights include a Frank Lloyd Wright–inspired theme emphasizing horizontal surfaces, modular wall units/media centers that can be configured to maximize space, and regional artwork inset in headboards—so when you wake up you actually will know where you are.

A few years back, a Super 8 manager in Phoenix made our trip hell by not relenting on a reservation that we made in error. We checked into a Super 8 15 miles away because that was the address I thought I was making the reservation for. This was a case where helping the customer out would have been good policy for all concerned since I was staying in a Super 8. Instead, they lost a customer for life, and no one in our family or my company will ever patronize them. I let the management know, and got no satisfaction. I don't have a grudge, I just use options.

Both times I stayed @ Super 8 hotels got bedbugs and cost more than the room between doctor visit and meds.

Super 8 in Fayetteville AR was the worst motel ever. When I notified Super 8 all they said was to notify management. Will never stay at one again! They could care less and have no standards.

Super 8 Motels are always a last resort and they look/feel/smell like it. I hope they are serious about their makeover because they have chased away hoards of potential customers in the past years. The best lesson I ever learned?
Never stay in a hotel named after a movie camera!

Good luck Super 8!

Oldflyer, it seems to me like you are holding a grudge you fat lethargic old dude who wasted all your money and now has to stay at Super8's. Let me guess, you make all your deposits at the ATM?

What an intelligent, meaningless comment steve.

I stayed at a Super8 in Lansing, MI last year. the room was ok.. but the service was horrible. My boyfriend and I both booked a room seperately me on Friday and him on Saturday. When we got to the hotel they said that the queen I reserved wasn't available and that they didn't actually have queens at the hotel in general. They gave us a two doubles. They did the same thing to my boyfriend the following night. We called costumer service which was very helpful and called the hotel to put us in a King room Saturday. Some of the Super8's are shady playing games. I hope the changes are for the better than the worse.

I applaud the effort, but its hard to see how they can change their immage as the rock bottom motel of last resort. Hey, its a resort motel! Really though, if they are serious about going a bit more upscale they should think about total rebranding including the name. I watched the "Undercover Boss" today w/an episode about Hooters. They are concerned that they are not attractive to the family market. Well, maybe because its Hooters? Super 8 means something in the market...cheap as hell.

Changing Super 8's image will not change the fact that most of their franchised hotels are awful!
