Do you use Wi-Fi when you fly?

Gogo Inflight Internet, the Wi-Fi service available on routes flown by American, Delta, United, and Virgin America among other airlines, was recently installed on the 1,000th plane in North America.

Gogo is installed on more planes than any other service in the world, and it is now available on more than 3,800 daily flights in North America. Overall, travelers are able to log on to Gogo service on about one-third of all domestic departures in the U.S., as a Gogo press releases states.

With Gogo hitting the notable four-digit mark, it got us wondering: Have you actually paid for and surfed the Web while flying? Are you in the habit of using the service regularly? And if you were calling the shots, what, if anything, would you change about the service?

For the sake of the uninitiated, please share your experiences and insights, including whether you give the experience as a whole a thumbs up or thumbs down.

Also, it's worth noting that Gogo isn't the only in-flight Internet service available in the U.S. As a Los Angeles Times post recently reported, Row 44 Internet service now offers Wi-Fi on more than 540 Southwest Airlines flights (all of the carrier's planes will be outfitted with Row 44 Wi-Fi by 2013), and the company has raised $37 million to expand the service to international flights.

As we noted in a previous story about "Wi-Fi in the Sky," because Gogo is a land-based service that relies on antennas on the ground, it won't work on planes flying over oceans -- which pretty much means it won't work on international flights. Row 44, on the other hand, uses satellites and is potentially functional when flying above oceans, deserts, and pretty much everywhere else.

I recently used gogo on a Delta flight. Flawless service, and it helped me to demonstrate some features of the iPad to a seat mate. I would use it again. The only mistake I made was buying it for a month, thinking that I could use it on my international connection. I was wrong, as I learned that there was no wifi on those flights. In any event, I would use it again, and it's availability is a good thing.

I also used it on a delta flight flying to Las vegas. The hours passed very quickly and I could instant messenger etc. I would use it again.

I have used Gogo on Virgin America and American Airlines, and experienced excellent service on both airlines. I am an accountant, take web design classes at the local community college, and I do volunteer work for a couple of community organizations. Being able to access the Internet while flying helps me be able to stay productive. If I am traveling on business, it gives me the extra time to stay caught up. If I am traveling for pleasure, it gives me the time to get ahead on tasks or projects so I can better enjoy my time on the ground.

I've used Gogo several times. I like being able to be on the internet while I'm flying. I just wish that after you've paid for Gogo inflight for the day, you could also use it in the airports while waiting for flight changes. I have the worst time with airport internet, even if it's "free", but Gogo has been really very convenient and easy to use.

wi-fi is a health hazard to all(sliced and diced electronically). it's like 2nd hand smoke. i'll never use it

I recently used gogo on a flight to continue a time sensitive project. It proved to be incredibly invaluable. Just because I was flying did not mean I was incommunicado. It should be on every flight including internationally. It is an incredible business tool and saved me vast sums of money in wasted time for my team.

Use GoGo on Delta with no problems, you can get first time free.

I have used gogo on a Virgin America cross country flight and a Delta flight. It was definitely worth it to be able to chat online with friends while flying, and to get some email work done. I am often very productive on a plane because I have no distractions, so the email access was great for that.

I wish that you could buy access for the day instead of just the flight you are on. If you have a connection you have to pay again to get back on the internet on the next flight. It is great to be able to connect while in the air!
