Good news for folks who consider their pets part of the family. The Mo's Nose app—based on a children's book series of the same name—is your go-to guide for pet-friendly travel. This GPS-enabled tool helps you sniff out everything from groomers, dog parks, and kennels to hotels that welcome canine guests. Does your pooch have a deep dark secret you can't wait to crack? Oddly enough, you can even search pet psychics across America. Released on August 19, this app is compatible with iPhones and iPod Touch and can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App Store.

As much as I loved my cat and rabbit growing up, vacation time was a human-only affair. All this talk of pet travel got me wondering: Do Americans really take their pets with them on vacation, or is this a niche market reserved for spoiled pageant dogs and cat ladies?
Let us know—have you ever traveled with a pet? What kind of pet did you take? Where did you go? And did your dog watch television while you were there?

Family vacations were always best when the dog came along. Why in the world would we leave the dog home unless it was a business trip? We've travelled with our dogs since we were kids to pet-friendly cottages at the beach, hotel rooms along the way and even Southern Living designer homes in Hilton Head! There are restrictions, but they love it. When my husband and I have travelled to Europe, we ask my mom to watch them. It's not always easy, but we do what we can. The only thing I will not do is put them in an airplane due to the safety factor.

We take our dogs (older boxer/shepard mix and a lab)with us on vacations, both tent camping and road trips. We don't have kids, they are our kids. It is a little more work to go walk the dogs but they love being new places. I have found dog parks in many cities we are going to or go on trail hikes so the dogs get plenty of leg-stretching after a long car trip. Keeps us from getting too lazy too. Love that more & more hotels are pet-friendly now.

I have never had a pet I travelled with. However, I have family and friends who always travel with their pets, and I myself have stayed in very nice hotels(Argonaut in S.F.) where they are welcome, I rode the elevator with a large but well behaved dog. I think it is great that people who want to take their pets now are able to do so more easily.

We take our Scotty,Wynston, whenever we can. We normally stay at LaQuinta as they are always dog friendly. Can't imagine travelling without him. also, you listed some really great small towns, but didn't mention Dunedin, FL. We moved here in 2005 and just love it. Near the water, right on the Pinellas Trail, shops, restaurants, clubs and really nice people. Very dog friendly. You should see the mural painted on the wall at Skips Bar. Very good to charities and the home of the Dunedin Doggie Rescue. Great place to live.

After any vacation where our "boy" gets left behind with his sitter, we usually feel so guilty that we take a couple more days off to do a road trip (no airplanes) just for him. Usually a dog is happy to just be with his people again, but we like to do something special geared just for him --pet friendly hotel, leash-free parks/hiking, friendly eating places, etc. We have a great time as well because his activities require we do something different, too. For example, we just recently did a raft trip on the Russian River with him after our Paris trip. Our dog has his own travel gear (sleeping bag, bowls, folding crate, etc.) It has really been great that so many places have opened up to include pets over the last few years. We make every effort to be responsible, considerate dog-people (lots of extra bags & clean-up wipes) to foster pet goodwill so that even more establishments will open to welcome every member of our little family.

We have travelled without our two standard poodles only when it is absolutely necessary. However, we prefer to take them with us when we are assured the hotel is pet-friendly. However, we do not take them on airplanes. We would travel more if the airlines were accommodating, i.e., larger dogs in cabin...there should be an area for them - we would gladly pay. They are family! And more well-behaved than most children...and certainly cleaner than some of the airline passengers that fly in pajama bottoms, crocs, & haven't bathed!
