Video: Saugatuck celebrates being a coolest small town
Posted by: Kate Appleton, Tuesday, Sep 21, 2010, 1:58 PM

We're tickled by this video of a victory parade along Butler Street in Saugatuck, Mich., which Budget Travel readers voted one of America's coolest small towns.

Representative Robert Genetski kicked things off by reading an official proclamation from Editor-in-Chief Nina Willdorf, and the crowd roared as he declared, "Even in bad weather, we know how to party!" Look for the gun salute, the Saugatuck High School marching band, and lots of enthusiastic, dolled-up locals, who kept the party going into the night.

Think your town is as cool as—or cooler than—Saugatuck? We're now accepting nominations for the 2011 edition of the coolest small towns in America. Nominate a town now!

I was in Saugatuck for this event. It was FANTASTIC!! People came from all over the USA to help the town celebrate. The Visitors Bureau had so many volunteers including 10 bands that played at different locations throughout the town. The streets were blocked off so that people could dance in the streets to blues, jazz, salsa, rock, funk and classic rock but the pouring rain drove everyone indoors. The kick-off ceremony and parade took place despite the rain. To prevent the High School Band from ruining their uniforms in the rain, they slipped into official event T-Shirts instead... The crowd broke into applause for them and for the Boy Scouts & Cub Scouts who stood for 20 long minutes holding a giant, heavy rain soaked American flag during the ceremony. There was a very moving tribute to 9/11 then they read Nina Wildorf's proclamation naming Saugatuck " The Coolest Small Party Town in America" which had the crowd roaring with approval!

The local merchants had "Thank you" specials for everyone wearing "I voted for Saugatuck" buttons. American Spoon Foods gave out 900 cones of gelato, Kilwins had a drawing for ice cream for one year, local artist James Brandess had a drawing for one of his paintings, Alle Rue drew for $500 in designer jewelry and many others had cash drawings... Almost every business offered a thank you special of some sort... it was AWSOME!!

We had the TIME OF OUR LIVES thanks to Budget Travel and partied into the wee hours of the night. You can check out a complete "After party" link on www.saugatuck.com with links to videos and everything that went on. There is also a lot about the party on saugatuck CVB Facebook page too! It was really a very COOL event!!!!!!
